  • In this paper, the forced vibration of damped composite beam with arbitrary section was analyzed. The damping material was assumed to have either complex shear modulus or complex Young???smodulus. Damped composite beam could be modeled using beam elements with less D.O.F. rather than solid elements. Finite element method for these methods was formulated and programmed using complex values. The results of frequency responses revealed good agreement with those of NASTRAN in several beam structures.

  • Behavior of platinum group elements during crystallization within ore magma is of interest. In this study platinum is selected and its mineralogical and geochemical behavior in the presence of antimony and tellurium is investigated at 600$^{\circ}C$. High purity Pt, Sb, and Te are used as starting material and silica quartz tubings are as container. Rection products have been examined by use of ore microscope, X-ray diffractometer, electron microprobe analyser and micro-indentation hardness tester. stable phases at 600$^{\circ}C$ are platinum (Pt), Pt5Sb, Pt3Sb, PtSb, stumpflite (PtSb), geversite (PtSb), PtTe, Pt3Te4, Pt2Te3, moncheite (PtTe2), tellurantimony (Sb2Te3), and antimony (Sb). Geversite is the mineral showing the most significant extent of solid solution by up to 27 at% between Sb and Te elements. Isothermal section of 600$^{\circ}C$ is established in this study. It is noted that platinum cannot coexists with stumpflite or geversite under equilibrium condition, and stumpflite composition in equilibrium with geversite may be used as geothermometer.

  • The effects of the alloying elements and cooling rates on the formation of phosphide eutectics of compacted vermicular graphite cast irons containing copper, tin, molybdenum for producing pearlitic matrix, and also containing phosphorus and boron for increasing wear resistance, were investigated. The liquidus phosphide eutectic was found to solidify as a pseudo-binary phosphide eutectic, but with increasing of the cooling rate non-equlibrium phosphide eutectic with needle type carbide could be formed. However, the liquidus phosphide eutectic containing both phosphorus and carbide-forming boron was found to solidify always as a non-equlibrium phosphide eutectic with coarse carbide, independent from the cooling rate. It was also confirmed that the tiny isolated phase observed by SEM was gamma iron solid solution with phosphorus, silicon, molybdenum and the matrix containing these tiny islands was phosphide phase containing manganese and molybdenum. The addition of copper was found to decrease the tendency of forming ledeburitic carbides in the phosphide eutectic.

  • Hydrostatic bearings are widely used in precision machines due to their high motion guide accuracy, low friction and high load carrying capacity. It is very useful to estimate the moving characteristics of hydrostatic bearings in the design stage. A new method is suggested for the analysis of fluid film in hydrostatic bearings. A combined mesh of 8 node solid elements with negligible deformation resistance and spring-dashpot elements is used in conjunction with the user subroutine of ABAQUS to represent the fluid film. The mesh can be used to capture the deformation of the bearing structure as well as the varying properties of fluid film. Analysis results from the finite element model are compared with theoretical solutions, results from FLUENT analysis and some previous works. With this method, static and dynamic analyses of the system containing the bearings can be performed efficiently.

  • This study presents development of a multi-way high speed pipe cutting machine to improve production rate of pipe cut pans. In this paper, structural and modal analysis for the developed machine is carried out to check safety of the machine design. The analysis is carried out by FEM simulation using the commercial software, CATIA V5. The machine is modeled by placing proper shell and solid finite elements. The final results of analysis are applied to the design of multi-way high speed pipe cutting machine and the machine is successfully developed.

  • The principal elements of the 31P NMR chemical shielding tensors have been determined for three binuclear platinum diphosphite complexes, K4[Pt2(P2O5H2)4·2H2O ("Pt2"), K4[Pt2(P2O5H2)4Cl2]·2H2O ("Pt2Cl2"), and K4[Pt2(P2O5H2)4Br2]·2H2O ("Pt2Br2"), by using a Herzfeld-Berger graphical method for interpreting the 31P MAS spectrum. The orientations of 31P chemical shielding tensor relative to the molecular axis system are partially assigned with combination of the longitudinal relaxation study of HPO32- and the reference to known tensor orientations of related sites; the most chemical shielding component, δ33, is directed along the P-Pt bond axis. A discussion is given in which the experimental principal elements of the 31P chemical shielding tensor are related with the Pt-Pt bond distances in binuclear platinum diphosphite complexes.

  • Smart tourism, a promising development trend for destinations, has drawn growing attention from practitioners and academics. Extant research has laid a solid theoretical foundation on the roles of technology and effects of smart tourism on tourists. However, little is known about structured and profound implications for a destination's smart tourism development. Thus, by selecting Hong Kong as a case city, this study proposes a framework of implications for smart tourism development. A qualitative approach was employed to gain insights from smart tourism stakeholders. Results shed light on nine elements that boost the smart tourism development of destinations. These nine elements serve as a significant reference for policy-making. Several theoretical and practical implications are provided for scholars, practitioners, and policy makers.

  • Hypereutectic Al-Si alloys have been widely utilized for wear-resistant components in the automotive industry. In order to expand the application of Hypereutectic Al-Si alloys, the addition of alloying elements forming a stable precipitate at high temperature is required. Thermally stable inter metallic compounds can be formed through the addition of transition elements such as Fe, Ni to Al alloys. However, the amount of transition element to be added to Al alloys is limited due to their low solid solubility. Also, hypereutectic Al-Si-Fe alloys form coarse primary Si phases and needle-shaped intermetallic compounds during solidification in the general casting processes. In this study, the effects of the destruction of Intermetallic compound and Si phase are investigated via hot extrusion. Both the microstructure and mechanical properties are discussed under different extrusion conditions.

  • This paper aims to contribute to the three-dimensional generalization of numerical prediction of crack propagation through the formulation of finite elements with embedded discontinuities. The analysis of crack propagation in two-dimensional problems yields lines of discontinuity that can be tracked in a relatively simple way through the sequential construction of straight line segments oriented according to the direction of failure within each finite element in the solid. In three-dimensional analysis, the construction of the discontinuity path is more complex because it requires the creation of plane surfaces within each element, which must be continuous between the elements. In the method proposed by Chaves (2003) the crack is determined by solving a problem analogous to the heat conduction problem, established from local failure orientations, based on the stress state of the mechanical problem. To minimize the computational effort, in this paper a new strategy is proposed whereby the analysis for tracking the discontinuity path is restricted to the domain formed by some elements near the crack surface that develops along the loading process. The proposed methodology is validated by performing three-dimensional analyses of basic problems of experimental fractures and comparing their results with those reported in the literature.

  • Inspections of ancient metallic bridges have illustrated fatigue cracking in riveted connections. This paper presents a comparison between two alternative finite element (FE) models proposed to predict the fatigue strength of a single shear and single rivet connection. The first model is based on solid finite elements as well as on contact elements, to simulate contact between the components of the connection. The second model is built using shell finite elements in order to model the plates of the riveted connection. Fatigue life predictions are carried out for the shear splice, integrating both crack initiation and crack propagation lives, resulting from the two alternative FE models. Global fatigue results, taking into account several clamping stresses on rivet, are compared with available experimental results. Proposed comparisons between predictions and experimental data illustrated that the proposed two-stage model yields consistent results.
