A series of two-dimensional (2D) finite element analyses have been performed to study the behaviour of single piles in consolidating ground. The analysis was conducted based on coupled analyses by considering changes of pore water pressure in the clay. In the analyses the soil slippage at the pile and the soil interface has been included. The method widely used in practice somewhat overestimates dragload by about 25% compared to the rigorous numerical analysis since partial mobilization of skin friction near neutral plane and reductions in the vertical soil stress is not incorporated. When soil slip develops at most of the pile length at the pile-soil interface during consolidation, further increases in dragload is not significant. Application of coating on the pile surface can reduce dragload and pile settlement substantially, but under an axial load on the pile head very large pile settlement can be developed unless pile tip is located to a stiff bearing layer.
In order to isolate a Fe(III)-reducer from the natural environment, soil samples were collected from various patty fields and enriched with ferric citrate as a source of Fe(III) under anaerobic condition. Since the enrichment culture was serially performed, the Fe(III)-reduction activity was serially diluted and cultivated on an agar plate containing lactate and ferric citrate in an anaerobic glove box. A Gram negative, motile, rod-shaped and facultative anaerobic Fe(III)-reducer was isolated based on its highest Fe(III)-reduction activity, Bacterial growth was coupled with oxidation of lactate to Fe(III)-reduction, but the isolate fermented pyruvate without Fe(III), The isolate reduced an insoluble ferric iron (FeOOH) as well as a soluble ferric iron (ferric citrate). Using the BBL crystal enteric/non-fermentor identification kit and 16S rDNA sequence analysis, the isolate was identified as Shewanella putrefaciens IR-1.

The ambient $PM_{2.5}$ samples were collected by $PM_{2.5}$ sampler from September 2010 to December 2012 at Daegu University, Gyeongsan. A total of 260 samples were collected and 27 species were analyzed by inductively coupled plasma, ion chromatography, and thermal optical reflectance methods. Factor analysis identified four sources such as biomass burning source/secondary aerosol source, soil source, industry source, and incinerator source/mobile source. Also, backward trajectories were calculated using HYSPLIT 4 (Hybrid single-particle lagrangian integrated trajectory) model and PSCF (Potential source contribution function) model was applied to identify the possible source locations of carbonaceous species and water soluble ions species. PSCF results showed that the possible source locations of most chemical constituents measured in Gyeongsan were the industrial areas in the eastern coast of China, northeast regions of China, the Gobi Desert, and east sea of Korea.

Recently, lots of lives and properties have been lost because comparatively large magnitude earthquakes were occurred in relatively safe regions and nations. It has been reported that number of earthquakes was increased rapidly in Korea. Hence, recently civil constructions were ensured against risks about earthquake not only large-scale structures but also comparative small-scale structures such as reservoir dams and life line by systematic aseismic design. Therefore, in this study, the seismic stability was ensured to evaluate aseismic performance for major planned reservoir dams in Korea. The seismic response analyses were conducted using SHAKE program on new reservoir dams under short-period, long-period and artificial seismic wave. The liquefaction potential for reservoir dams was assessed by using results from seismic response analysis (simplified assessment method for liquefaction potential). Also, fully coupled analysis--interaction of pore-pressure and soil--was performed to investigate both the development of excess pore water pressure and the characteristic of dynamic shear strain.

This study analyzed the change of flowout and suspend solid in Andong and Imha basin according to the climate change to develop evaluation index about turbid water occurrence possibility and to support the countermeasures for turbid water management using GIS-based Soil and Water Assessment Tools (SWAT). MIROC3.2 hires model values of A1B climate change scenario that were supplied by Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) were applied to future climage change data. Precipitation and temperature were corrected by applying the output value of 20th Century Climate Coupled Model (20C3M) based on past climate data during 1977 and 2006 and downscaled with Change Factor (CF) method. And future climate change scenarios were classified as three periods (2020s, 2050s, 2080s) and the change of flowout and suspended solid according to the climate change were estimated by coupling modeled value with SWAT model. Flowout and suspended solid of Andong and Imha basin in 2020s, 2050s, and 2080s were simulated as increasing compared with standard year (2006). Also, as the result of seasonal change, flowout and suspended solid of Andong and Imha basin in spring, autumn, and winter showed as increasing compared with standard year. And them of Andong and Imha basin in summer were analyzed as decreasing compared with standard year.

Since the seismic response of dams can be strongly influenced by the dam-reservior interaction in needs to be taken into account in the seismic design of dams. In general a substructure method is employed to solve the dam-reservoir interaction problem in which the dam body is modeled with finite elements and the infinite region of a reservoir using a transmitting boundary. When the water is modeled as a compressible fluid the equation is formulated in frequency domain. But nonlinear behavior of dam body cannot be studied easily in the frequency domain method. In this study time domain formulation of the dam-reservoir-soil interaction is proposed based onthe lumped parameter modeling of the reservoir region, The frequency dependent dynamic-stiffness coefficients of the reservoir are converted into frequency independent lumped-parameters such as masses dampers and springs. The soil-structure interactionis modeled using lumped parameters in similar way. the ground is assumed as a visco-elastic stratum on the rigid bedrock. The dynamic stiffnesses of the rigid surface foundation are calculated using the hyperelement method and are converted into lumped parameters. The application example demonstrated that the lumped parameter model gives almost identical results with the frequency domain formulation.

The first part of this study dealt with the determination of soil parameters for Lade's double work-hardening model using the raw data obtained from cubical and cylinderal triaxial tests At present, it should be investigated which test can simulated satisfactorily the behavior of soft clayey foundation. In this regard, plate bearing test on the 2-dimentional model foundation(218cm long, 40cm wide, 19&m high) was performed, and finite element analysis carried out to abtain the behavior of the foundation. Settlement, lateral displacement, displacement vector and mode of failure were measured and these values were compared with numerical values in order to validate the numerical program developed by authors. The FEM technique was based on Christain-Boehmer's method, in which the displacement is obtained at each nodal point while stress and pore water pressure at each element. In this research, Biot's equation, which explains was elahorately the phisical meaning of consolidation, was selected, as a governing equation, coupled with Lade's double surface work-hardening constitutive model.

Various geosynthetics are widely applied to civil structures and waste landfill site for reinforcement and water resistance. The use of geosynthetics inevitably involves the coupled behaviors of different materials which include large displacement and strain-softening behaviors, etc. In this study, the effect of chemical element in the leachate on the interface shear strength under the cyclic loading condition was analyzed. The Multi-purpose Interface Apparatus (M-PIA) has been modified and cyclic direct shear tests have been performed. The submerging period of each specimen is 200 days. Additionally, the Field-Emission Scanning Electronic Microscopy (FIB) analysis has been also performed to induce the reason of the variation of disturbance function and verify the hypothesis on the decay-proof ability of geosynthetics. Consequently, the charateristics of chemical degradation of geosynthetic-soil interface are verified and the variation of the disturbance function is mainly caused by the different type of soil mineral decay, based on the FIB results.

During the post green revolution era, wheat and rice were the main crops of concern to cater the food security issues of Pakistan. The use of semi dwarf high yielding varieties along with extensive use of fertilizers and surface and ground water lead to substantial increase in crop production. However, the higher crop productivity came at the cost of over exploitation of the precious land and water resources, which ultimately has resulted in the dwindling production rates, loss of soil fertility, and qualitative and quantitative deterioration of both surface and ground water bodies. Recently, during the past two decades, severe climate changes are further pushing the Pakistan's wheat-rice system towards its limits. This necessitates a careful analysis of the current crop water requirements and water footprints (both green and blue) to project the future trends under the most likely climate change phenomenon. This was done by using the FAO developed CROPWAT model v 8.0, coupled with the statistically-downscaled climate projections from the 8 Global Circulation Models (GCMs), for the two future time slices, 2030s (2021-2050) and 2060s (2051-2080), under the two Representative Concentration Pathways (RCPs): 4.5 and 8.5. The wheat-rice production system of Punjab, Pakistan was considered as a case study in exploration of how the changing climate might influence the crop water requirements and water footprints of the two major crops. Under the worst, most likely future scenario of temperature rise and rainfall reduction, the crop water requirements and water footprints, especially blue, increased, owing to the elevated irrigation demands originating from the accelerated evapotranspiration rates. A probable increase in rainfall as envisaged by some GCMs may partly alleviate the adverse impacts of the temperature rise but the higher uncertainties associated with the predicated rainfall patterns is worth considering before reaching a final conclusion. The total water footprints were continuously increasing implying that future climate would profoundly influence the crop evapotranspiration demands. The results highlighted the significance of the irrigation water availability in order to sustain and improve the wheat-rice production system of Punjab, Pakistan.

Ground heat pump systems utilize the annually stable underground temperature to supply heat for space heating and cooling. The underground temperature affects not only the underground ecosystem, but also the performance of these systems. However, in spite of the widespread use of these systems, there have been few researches on the effect of the systems on underground temperature. In this research, case studies with numerical simulation have been conducted, in order to estimate the effect of ground heat pump systems on underground temperature. The simulation was coupled with the ground water-ground heat transfer model and the ground surface heat transfer model. In the result, it was found that the underground change depends on the heat transfer from the ground surface, the heat exchange rate, and the heat conductivity of soil.
