For the purpose of the study, of the 76 areas subject to preliminary concentrated management on sediment disaster in the downtown area, 9 areas were selected as research areas. They were classified into three stratified rock areas (Gyeongsan City, Goheung-gun and Daegu Metropolitan City), three igneous rock areas (Daejeon City, Sejong Special Self-Governing City and Wonju City) and three metamorphic rock areas (Namyangju City, Uiwang City and Inje District) according to the characteristics of the bedrock in the research areas. As for the 9 areas, analyses were conducted based on tests required to calculate soil characteristics, a predictive model for root adhesive power, loading of trees and on-the-spot research. As for a rainfall scenario (rainfall intensity), the probability of rainfall was applied as offered by APEC Climate Center (APCC) in Busan. As for the prediction of landslide risks in the 9 areas, TRIGRS and LSMAP were applied. As a result of TRIGRIS prediction, the risk rate was recorded 30.45% in stratified rock areas, 41.03% in igneous rock areas and 45.04% in metamorphic rock areas on average. As a result of LSMAP prediction based on root cohesion and the weight of trees according to crown density, it turned out to a 1.34% risk rate in the stratified rock areas, 2.76% in the igneous rock areas and 1.64% in the metamorphic rock areas. Analysis through LSMAP was considered to be relatively local predictive rather than analysis using TRIGRS.
Samples (river water, tap water, soil, sediment, fish and shellfish) collected in Downstream Area of Nakdong River were analyzed for organochlorine pesticides by G.C. equipped with electron capture detector. Residue levels of organochlorine pesticides in the river water and tap water ranged from less than detection limit (ND) to 56ppt. Total BHC concentration in the river water and tap water were found to increase in summer and decrease in winter. The variation appeared to be related to rain fall. ${\alpha}-BHC\;and\;{\beta}-BHC$ concentration in the soil were ND-3.3ppb and ND-769.7ppb, respectively. ${\alpha}-BHC\;and\;{\beta}-BHC$ concentration in the sediment were ND-2.0ppb and ND-409.9ppb, respectively. Concentration factor of total BHC in the sediment ranged from 83 to 3213. In fish, Carasssus carassius and shellfish, Anodonta woodiana(Lea) the concentration factor of ${\beta}-BHC$ and total BHC were 2,609, 435 and 3,261, 375, respectively.
In this study, a software module to predict the effectiveness of vegetation buffer strip (VBS) has been developed for using with Chemicals, Agricultural Management and Erosion Losses (CAMEL), a distributed watershed model. Most basic functions for the VBS module are same as CAMEL except functions newly developed to implement sedimentation enhancement by vegetation and level spreaders. For verification of the VBS module, sensitivity analyses for length, roughness, soil and vegetation type of VBS were carried out using a test grid cell. The surface discharge of sediment are highly sensitive to the roughness coefficient of VBS. The removal efficiencies of VBS for the surface discharges of sediment and TP are generally high regardless of environment changes. The surface discharges of TOC and TN are highly sensitive to the length and soil of VBS. The removal efficiencies of VBS for the surface discharges of TOC and TN are generally lower than those of sediment and TP. The newly developed VBS module reasonably simulates the removal efficiencies of surface discharges that vary according to the environment changes. It is expected that this VBS module can be used for evaluating the effectiveness of VBS-based best management practices to be applied to reduce pollution discharges from various non-point sources.
The contamination of a suite of heavy metals were evaluated in water and sediments of urban stream, Tancheon down the stream. Tancheon is a urban stream which goes all the way across the urban area where various pollution sources are present. The sixteen study sites from seven different areas were designated down the stream. The heavy metal levels of the streams were detected in the order of Zn>Cu>Ni>Pb>Cd>Cr>Sb. There was a difference in the relative order of the concentration ranking in lake sediments. There is a trend that the heavy metal levels are higher at the sites where the construction causes inflow of soil particles to stream. Toxicity tests using pore-water in sediments were conducted for samples collected in some study sites, and pore-water in one site was proven to be toxic to Japanes medaka (Oryzias latipes). The reason may be the fecal pollution rather than heavy metal effect. Strong odor was detected in the sediment whose pore-water samples showed ecotoxicity. We did not observed the increasing concentration of heavy metals down to stream since the soil texture varied in the stream area of our study. Further study is needed to find quantitative relations between the level of contamination and its eco-effect.

Background: South Korea's Act on Registration and Evaluation, etc. of Chemicals (known as K-REACH) was established to protect public health and the environment from hazardous chemicals. 4,4'-Methylenedianiline (MDA), which is used as a major intermediate in industrial polymer production and as a vulcanizing agent in South Korea, is classified as a toxic substance under the K-REACH act. Although MDA poses potential ecological risks due to industrial emissions and hazards to aquatic ecosystems, no ecological risk assessment has been conducted. Objectives: The aim of this study is to assess the ecological risk of MDA by identifying the actual exposure status based on the K-REACH act. Methods: Various toxicity data were collected to establish predicted no effect concentrations (PNECs) for water, sediment, and soil. Using the SimpleBox Korea v2.0 model with domestic release statistical data and EU emission factors, predicted environmental concentrations (PECs) were derived for ten sites, each referring to an MDA-using company. Hazard quotient (HQ) was calculated by ratio of the PECs and PNECs to characterize the ecological risk posed by MDA. To validate the results of modeling-based assessment, concentration of MDA was measured using in-site freshwater samples (two to three samples per site). Results: PNECs for water, sediment, and soil were 0.000525 mg/L, 4.36 mg/kg dw, and 0.1 mg/kg dw, respectively. HQ for surface water and sediment at several company sites exceeded 1 due to modeling data showing markedly high PEC in each environmental compartment. However, in the results of validation using in-site surface water samples, MDA was not detected. Conclusions: Through an ecological risk assessment conducted in accordance with the K-REACH act, the risk level of MDA emitted into the environmental compartments in South Korea was found to be low.
Eleven runoff $plots(3{\times}15\;m)$ were built on a sloping field of a high plateau in Kangwon Province, Korea. The plots were treated with different tillage, residue covers and fertilizers, corn and potato were cultivated, and sediment discharge was measured from the plots for 3 years. Agricultural management practices were monitored around the plots to develop adequate best management practices. The least sediment occurred from the plots with no-till and 100% residue cover $(corn,\;0.1{\sim}2.2\;t/ha/year)$ and with contour tillage and vinyl sheet cover plots $(potato,\;0.1{\sim}0.2\;t/ha/year)$. The largest sediment was measured from the plots with up-and-down till and no cover ($11{\sim}33$ and $16{\sim}31\;t/ha/year$ from corn and potato plots, respectively). The type of organic and commercial fertilizers seemed not to affect sediment discharge. Sediment discharge from contour plots were largely dependent on the collapse of ridges due to the flush of water stored in furrows. The sediment discharge from contour corn and potato plots with no residue cover was $10{\sim}27$ and $16{\sim}24\;t/ha/year$, respectively. No-till with residue cover, vinyl cover for tuber crops, construction of furrow dam, frost heave research, furrow and ridge tillage with furrow dam after tuber crop harvest, limited stalk harvest of row crops, use of winter cover crops, and other common best management practices were recommended to minimize the sediment discharge from a high plateau sloping land culture.

While characteristics of topography, soil, and vegetation coverage were surveyed, also surface runoff and soil erosion for each rainfall event were measured to analyze effect of change of land cover conditions in mountain areas, Yangyang, directly after wildfire. Fifteen rainfall events were taken in total during the survey period. The result of this survey appeared that the amount of surface runoff and soil erosion are a great difference between plots with rapidly recovered vegetation and bare plots after wildfire. The burned plots where vegetation recovered rapidly generated two times or more of surface runoff and soil erosion than control plots, as burned plots with bare soil showed about ten times of surface runoff and sediment than control plots. The result of correlation analysis between main parameters of the surface runoff and soil erosion presented that rainfall factors and vegetation factors had significant effects on runoff and soil erosion. The sensitivity of runoff and soil erosion showed specially high correlation with vegetation indices. If the land surface disturbed by wildfire are recovered by natural vegetation as time passes, runoff and soil erosion may be decreased gradually. Because runoff and soil erosion in the areas with rare vegetation or bare soil are generated continuously, the discriminated mediation strategies would be established as condition of each region.
Soils in the sloping uplands in Korea are subject to intensive land use with high input of agrochemicals and are vulnerable to soil erosion. Development of the environmentally sound land management strategy is essential for a sustainable production system in the sloping upland. This report addresses the status of upland agriculture and the best management practices for the uplands toward the sustainable agriculture. More than 60% of Korean lands are forest and only 21% are cultivating paddy and upland. Uplands are about 7% of the total lands and about 62% of the uplands are in the slopes higher than 7%. Due to the site-specificity of the upland, many managerial and environmental problems are occurring, such as severe erosion, shallow surface soils with rocky fragments, and loadings of non-point source (NPS) contaminants into the watershed. Based on the field trials, most of the sloping uplands were classified as Suitability Class III-V and the major limiting factor was slope and rock fragments. Due to this, soils were over-applied with N fertilizer, even though N rate was the recommendation. This resulted in decreases in yield, degradation of soil quality and increases in N loading to the leachate. Various case studies drew management practices toward sustainable production systems. The suggested BMP on the managerial, vegetative, and structural options were to practice buffer strips along the edges of fields and streams, winter cover crop, contour and mulching farming, detention weir, diversion drains, grassed waterway, and slope arrangement. With these options, conservation effects such as reductions in raindrop impact, flow velocity, runoff and sediment loss, and rill and gully erosion were observed. The proper management practice is a key element of the conservation of the soil and water in the sloping upland.
This study was carried out to examine characteristics of physical and chemical current status and problems of Salix spp. communities based on growth characteristics by tree age and height of the tree species in around Namgang Dam reservoir area. Tree density in 4 survey areas was 5,284 trees/ha, but all areas need to control high tree density. Tree crown area in 4 survey areas was 9,786.4 $m^2/ha$ and crown area of Salix spp. was the most dominant among tree species in watershed of the Jinyang lake. Mean soil depth in 4 survey areas was 65.5 cm higher in the sedimental deposit soil (78 cm) than in forest soil (12.5 cm) near the watershed. Soil bulk density was also higher in the sedimental deposit soil than in forest soil because of poor porosity in the sandy sediment. Soil pH was higher in sedimental deposit soil (A, B horizon:pH 6.7) than in forest soil (A horizon:pH 5.3; B horizon:pH 5.2) because of originated from non-point source polution and detergent of domestic sewage. The results suggest that growth of Salix spp. could be poor because of low fertility with low cation exchange capacity in sedimental deposit soil.

This study purposes to develop a model to analyze soil loss in estimating prior disaster influence. The model of analyzing soil loss develops the soil loss analysis system on the basis of Internet by introducing cloud computing system, and also develops a standalone type in connection with HyGIS. The soil loss analysis system is developed to draw a distribution chart without requiring a S/W license as well as without preparing basic data such as DEM, soil map and land cover map. Besides, it can help users to draw a soil loss distribution chart by applying various factors like direct rain factors. The tools of Soil Loss Anaysis Model in connection with HyGiS are developed as add-on type of GMMap2009 in GEOMania, and also are developed to draw Soil Loss Hazard Map suggested by OECD. As a result of using both models, they are developed very conveniently to analyze soil loss. Hereafter, these models will be able to be improved continuously through researches to analyze sediment a watershed outlet and to calculate R value using data of many rain stations.
