  • Recently, Korea brings to remarkable levels about industrialization, modernization, population and development of technology. Especially, the rapidly growing from this technology has increased the burden on existing industrial waste landfills. The purpose of this research is to existing knowledge base of landfill cover liner behavior during periods freeze/thaw. Although these tests have been invaluable in clarifying the problem of freeze/thaw, extending the results of such experimental studies to prototype landfills are questionable. For this investigation, the author utilized a large scale laboratory simulation allowing inclusion of the field depth of the cover systems, layered soil profiles, rainfall simulation, a cold climate and boundary conditions similar to those encountered in the landfill. And the soil materials used stabilized soils (mixed clays, cements, and minerals) instead of clays. The bottom liners are made up of drainage layer (30cm), stabilized layer (75cm), and leach collection layer (60cm). The stabilized layers are made up of supporting layer (45cm) and impermeable layer (30cm) - consisted of $P_A$ and $P_B$ layer.

  • It is important to determine optimum soil covering depths for tree survival and growth because soil covering depths for establishing tree planting bases in coastal reclaimed lands are related to the costs for soil collection, transportation and land reclamation. The objectives of this study were carried out to determine optimum soil covering depths for the normal growth of planted trees in a coastal reclaimed land. The study sites were located in Asan National Industrial Complex in Pyeongtaek City, Gyeonggi-do. Four tree species (Pinus thunbergii, Chamaecyparis pisifera, Zelkova serrata, Quercus acutissima) with one hundred eighty trees of each species were planted in various depths of soil covering (no soil covering, 0.5 m, 1.5 m, 2.0 m soil covering treatments) on April 1998, and the tree growth patterns were measured on September 2000. The change of soil properties, tree mortality rate, root collar diameter and height growth were measured from each soil covering depth treatment on September 2000. Soil pH, EC, exchangeable cations ($K^+$, $Na^+$, $Ca^{2+}$, $Mg^{2+}$), anion $Cl^-$, and base saturation increased with decreased soil covering depths. The mortality rates of tree species showed decreased with increased soil covering depths. The height growth of tree species increased with increased soil covering depths. Height growth of Pinus thunbergii was significantly different between the soil covering depth below 0.5m and other three covering depths, while the growth of other species (C. pisifera, Z. serrata, Q. acutissima) was significantly higher in soil covering depths below 1.5 m than in other soil covering depth treatments. The root collar diameter growth of all tree species showed increasing trends with increased soil covering depths. It is recommended to cover the soil depths above 1.5 m to decrease mortality and to stimulate the tree growth of C. pisifera, Z. serrata and Q. acutissima, while P. thunbergii which is a salt tolerate species could be planted in the 1.0 m soil covering depth.

  • This study presents a relationship between gas quantity and measurement resistance using the bubble meter, the water head indicator and the rotor meter from the gas vent sanitary landfill. From the one-dimensional analyses and experiments, the below results have been obtained. The gas volume sourcing from the gas vent depends on the permeability of final cover soil, its cover depth and distance between the gas vents. The total gas volume producing in the interested domain may be accurately measured by the bubble meter, the water head indicator and the rotor meter if the clay is used for the final cover soil. The required times approaching to the steady-state are different with respect to the flow meters, one day is for the bubble meter and the water head indicator and one hour for the rotor meter.

  • World widely, the occurrences of earthquakes have been increased recently. Speculating from cases of earthquakes in the world, it is reported that damages have been made underground structures like cut-and-cover tunnels, especially on the upper of tunnel with a shallow depth and the backfilled area adjacently by earthquakes. Earthquakes have a tendency to increase recently in Korea but it is deficient in seismic design criteria. In this study, Shaking table test on both soil and EPS blocks was performed to analyze the efficiency of the seismic performance of the cut-and-cover tunnels according to characteristic of backfill materials and embanking material. It turned out to be effective in improving the seismic performance according to analysis of strain and bending stress of tunnel by earthquakes.

  • Damage of cut-and-cover tunnel lining can be attributed to physical and mechanical factors. Physical factors include material property, reinforcement corrosion, etc. while mechanical factors include underground water pressure, vehicle loads, etc. This study is limited to the modeling of rigid circular cut and cover tunnel constructed at a depth of $1.0{\sim}1.5D$ in loose sandy ground and subjected to a vibration frequency of 100 Hz. In this study, only damages due to mechanical factors in the form of additional loads were considered. Among the different types of additional, excessive earth pressure acting on the cut-and-cover tunnel lining is considered as one of the major factors that induce deformation and damage of tunnels after the construction is completed. Excessive earth pressure may be attributed to insufficient compaction, consolidation due to self-weight of backfill soil, precipitation and vibration caused by traffic. Laboratory tunnel model tests were performed in order to determine the earth pressure acting on the tunnel lining and to investigate the applicability of existing earth pressure formulas. Based on the difference in the monitored and computed earth pressure, a factor of safety was recommended. Soil deformation mechanism around the tunnel was also presented using the picture analysis method.

  • This study was conducted to establish a Habitat Suitability index (HSI) based on literature research and field surveys on ecology and habitat of 'Hynobius leechii'. And this study will be used as basic data for qualitative evaluation of habitat environment. The survey sites were divided into natural habitats close to the prototype habitat and artificial restoration areas where Hynobius leechii was monitored. So the types of habitats were diversified. Hynobius leechii is a vulnerable species to climate change because it is affected by the microhabitat and has low mobility. HSI variables of Hynobius leechii were extracted through domestic and overseas literature, and standards were extracted from literature research and field survey. The standards were presented as a value of the physical allowable category in consideration of realization. To verify the study, an in-depth consultation was conducted by amphibians experts. HSI variables of Hynobius leechii were included 9 variables such as Overstory canopy cover(%), Understory cover(%), Water-pH, Soil-pH, Soil relative humidity(%), Leaf litter depth(cm), Rock substrates (%), Type of Coarse woody, Distance from Street or Pollutant(m).

  • This study was conducted to find out definition, specification and characteristics of water-proof method for pond at golf courses that located in the mountain in Korea. Water-proof method of pond was selected by location, kind of soil, area, depth, cost, construction period and so on. 1. Soil Bentonite Sealing Liner(SBL) is to mix soil with a good quality bentonite. Then the mixed material was dressed on the bottom of pond. $\\$Merit of SBL is to purify the water and planting is possible. It can also reduce construction period and is economical. It's easy to find out the leak points. Demerit of SBL is expensive, if good quality soil is not in constructing site. Shape of pond edge is simple. 2. Ethylen Propylene Diene Monomer Sheef(EPDM-Sheet) makes use of sheet that resists to acid and alkaline. EPDM-Sheet spreads out as a mat on the pond for water-proof. Merit of EPDM-Sheet is to perfectly prove water and make a diverse shape of pond edge. Demerit of EPDM-Sheet is not friendly to environment. It needs drain system, air ventilation and long period of construction. It is also difficult to find out leaking points in this method. 3. Water proof of ESS-13 uses ESS-13 that is resin of vegetable matter and friendly to environment. To prove water of pond, ESS-13 is delicate with water in the pond. After that, Ess-13 in the water is expanded at pore space in the soil and cover with soil. ESS-13 can be to prove a leaking pond in golf course under business. ESS-13 is cheap and it needs short construction period. It does not need to switch the old water-proof system, additionally. It needs to move fishes to other place before utilizing ESS-13.

  • Backfill grouting and realistic convergence distribution were not properly considered in previous studies on 2D numerical analysis of a shield TBM tunnel. In this study, a modeling method was suggested to cope with this problem by considering a realistic convergence distribution and proper properties of backfill grouting. To this end, the influence of gap parameter and depth of rock cover on volume loss and composed of ground volume loss around tunnel excavation and surface volume loss were analyzed with a single layer of weathered soil. As a result, most of surface settlements were occurred immediately after excavation. Additional, as depth of rock cover and gap parameter increased, the influence range of surface settlement curves obtained from 2D numerical analyses became broader than a suggested theoretical equation. Therefore, it is inferred that gap parameter should be applied based on load distribution ratio and the property of backfill grouting properly considered for the estimation of the precise behavior of a shield TBM tunnel in 2D numerical analysis.

  • Hollows are easily made and bearing capacity is lowered near underground structures of concrete pavement because of poor compaction and long term settlement of the ground. Distresses occur and lifespan is shortened because of larger stress induced by external loadings expected than that in the design. In this paper, the distresses of the concrete pavement slab over box culverts were investigated at the Korea Expressway Corporation(KEC) test road. The transverse cracking of the slabs over the culverts was compared between up and down lines with different soil cover depth. The box culvert without soil cover and concrete pavement were modeled and analyzed by the finite element method(FEM) to verify the transverse cracking at the test road. Wheel loading was applied after self weight of the pavement and temperature gradient of the concrete slab at Yeojoo, Gyeonggi where the test road is located were considered. Positions of maximum tensile stress and corresponding positions of the wheel loading were found for each loading combination. Joint position minimizing the maximum tensile stress was found and optimal slab length over the culverts with diverse size were suggested.

  • Analysis of the change in water content and distribution was conducted according to the supply of recirculation water to a landfill. An excavation sample analysis showed that the recirculation water injection zone had water content 8.8% point higher than that of the non-injection zone, after 8 months of operation. And due to the influence of recirculation water supply by vertical wells in injection zones, the water content increases along with depth more clearly than non-injection zone. According to an electrical specific-resistivity survey after 13 months of operation, the water content got higher towards the bottom of the landfill. The water transmission coefficient is 8.72×10-4 cm/sec for injection zones and 3.36×10-5 cm/sec for the intermediate cover layer; analysis shows that the intermediate cover layer may affect the penetration velocity of water supplied by the horizontal injection tube. For the scientific design and operation of re-injection facilities, it was deemed necessary to follow-up research on the residence time and behavior of re-injection water considering the ratio of recirculation water supply in horizontal and vertical tubes, and pitcher coefficient of intermediate and waste layers.
