The southwestern part of Korean Peninsula, which length is about 13,000 km, is largely formed with soft cohesive soil ground and when it is developed, the low bearing capacity and excessive settlement of soft ground give many problems. In particular, a lot of clayey soil is deserted due to high moisture content and weakness, and areas formed with soft ground. In this study it was performed unconfined compression test, CBR tests, laboratory frost heaving test, and wheel tracking test in order to determine the optimum mixture ratio of paper sludge ash added chemical stabilizer with soft soil for consideration of its frost heaving and strength characteristics. As a results of the above experiments, when the soft soil is mixed with 6% of chemical stabilizer to improve the soft soil for utilizing as a subgrade soil material. It is satisfied the quality standard of fill materials, and the results of this research are expected to be used as an appropriate usage standard for utilization of on-site soil generated.

Ths paper was aimed to investigate the effect of reinforcement for the deformation characteristics of clayey foundation. Among numerous improvement method of foundation, only geotextil-reinforced foundation and foundation with both geotextile and sand mat which were 2-dimensional model clayey foundations were selected for load test in order to obtain fundamental results in analizing the behavior of the foundation with geotextile. To scrutinize the behavior characteristics and effect of reinforcement, the model foundations were constructed with various conditions on the location of layout of geotextile, the number of layouts and the depth of sand mat As for the technique of the numerical analysis elasto-plastic constitutive model for clayey soil, beam element for geotextile and elastic model for sand were respectively employed. Interface element was introduced for the block between materials with different rigidity. Observed values and numerical results were compared with satisfactory correspondence, which proved that the numercial technique developed in this paper was available.
Purpose: The consolidation settlement of soft ground is dependent on the distribution of pore water pressure which is also affected by hydraulic conductivities (boundary condition) of layers, thickness of clayey soil layer and surcharge. Results: However, the current consolidation analyses are mostly based on Terzaghi's consolidation theory that assumes the initial pore water pressure ratio with depth to be constant. In this study, numerical analysis are carried out to investigate the variation of pore water pressure dissipation with depth and thickness of clayey soil layer, time, surcharge as well as drainage conditions. Conclusion: Comparative study with Terzaghi's consolidation theory is also conducted. The result shows that Terzaghi's consolidation theory should be used with caution unless it is ideally corresponded to the isochrone.
In this paper, the experimental study on the behavior of the dredged clay was performed by introducing the consolidation teat method using continuous loading. Also a new testing method was examined and the strength of the dredged clay using thin plate was evaluated. The rheological characteristics of the dredged clay are described by the gingham model. The static and rheologic thin plate penetration test is proposed for the shear strength testing method. It is found that both of testing methods are reasonable and have a practicability. Especially, the strength increases for a water content which is less than two times of liquid limit in case of silty soil and clayey soil. About plasticity index, the strength increases rapidly for a value less than 10 for silt, 5 for clay which a water content is normalized by plasticity index of silty soil rather than clayey soil.
Applicability of Skempton's and Hansbo's equation for estimating strength incremental ratio of Korean marine clayey soil was analyzed. These empirical equations have been commonly applied to design soft ground improvement by, especially, staged loading method. Strength incremental ratios proposed by Skempton (1954, 1957) and Hansbo (1957) using field vane tests(FVTs), measured in Scandinavia depends on plasticity index and liquid limit. Although lean clay in Scandinavia can be classified as clay based on USCS, this soil contains no clay mineral because it was produced by the glacial grinding of rock, sometimes, called rock flour. On the contrary, plasticity indices of Korean marine clayey soils increase linearly with the percentage of clay fraction (% finer than $2{\mu}m$ by weight). Except for strength incremental ratios using $q_u/2$ values in the case of soils having a low plasticity, such as Incheon, Hwaseong and Gunsan soils, these values are in the range of 0.25 to 0.35, independently of the plasticity index, $I_p$.

This paper presents the results of plate load test and dynamic load test performed to evaluate the performance of geocell where it is used to reinforce soft subgrade for high-speed railroad. Efficacy of geocell was observed in increase in bearing capacity of subgrade and reduction of thickness of reinforced sub-ballast. Plate load tests were carried out at four different places with varying foundation soil strength as a function of number of geocell layer, type of filler material, thickness of cover soil, and the presence of non-woven geotextile. Dynamic load tests were performed in a laboratory. The test soil chamber consists of, from the bottom, 50 cm thick clayey soil, one layer of geocell filled with crushed stone, 10 cm thick crushed stone cover, reinforced sub-ballast of varying thickness, 35 cm thick ballast. This configuration was determined based on the results of numerical analysis and plate load tests. For each set of the dynamic load tests, loads were applied more than 80,000 times. One layer of geocell underlying a 10 cm thick cover soil led to an increase in bearing capacity three to four times compared to a crushed stone layer of the same thickness substituted for the geocell and cover soil layer. Given the test conditions, the thickness of reinforced sub-ballast can be reduced by approximately 35 cm with the presence of geocell.
The practical usage of underground space and demand for vehicular tunnels necessitate the construction of non-circular wide rectangular tunnels. However, constructing large tunnels in soft clayey soil conditions with no ground improvement can lead to excessive ground deformations and collapse. In recent years, in situ ground improvement techniques such as jet grouting and deep cement mixing are often utilized to perform cement-stabilisation around the tunnel boundary to prevent large deformations and failure. This paper discusses the stability characteristics and failure behaviour of a wide rectangular tunnel in cement-treated soft clays. First, the plane strain finite element model is developed and validated with the results of centrifuge model tests available in the past literature. The critical tunnel support pressures computed from the numerical study are found to be in good agreement with those of centrifuge model tests. The influence of varying strength and thickness of improved soil surround, and cover depth are studied on the stability and failure modes of a rectangular tunnel. It is observed that the failure behaviour of the tunnel in improved soil surround depends on the ratio of the strength of improved soil surround to the strength of surrounding soil, i.e., qui/qus, rather than just qui. For low qui/qus ratios, the stability increases with the cover; however, for the high strength improved soil surrounds with qui >> qus, the stability decreases with the cover. The failure chart, modified stability equation, and stability chart are also proposed as preliminary design guidelines for constructing rectangular tunnels in the improved soil surrounded by soft clays.

When highly compressible, clayey soil layers lies at a limited depth and large consolidtion settlements are expected as the result of construction, precompression of soil may be used to minimize postconstruction settlement. In this study, we tried to find the possibility about the effect of ground improvement using flat dilatometer at the Inchon International Airport where preloading was installed. Field and laboratory tests were performed for soft ground before and after preloading in order to check the effectiveness of the soft ground improvement and compared with the test results of dilatometer which obtained before and after preloading at the same location Field tests such as flat dilatometer, vane, CPTu tests were performed before and after preloading and undisturbed samples are obtained to carry out laboratory tests. As comparing results, after preloading, unit weight, effective stress, undrained shear strength were increased and we can also check the decrease of consolidation late caused of decrease of void ratio. Furthermore, it is assumed that the possibility on the effect of ground improvement by using the flat dilatometer

The EPS construction method-one kind of the load reducing methods-utilizes the EPS blocks, ultra-light materials whose unit weight is about 1/100 of soils and has been applied to many soft ground sites. It needed 3,000 days to get the 90% degree of the consolidation for the case of 12m high soil embankments on the 30m thick soft clayey foundations. The N value of SPT at this deposit was less than 5. The pack drain was installed to promote the radial consolidations. Although staged embankments were planned, designers failed to get a sufficient stability of the foundation ground. Therefore, the EPS fill method was selected to reduce the load and the construction period. EPS blocks(D-20 model) replaced the upper part of the soil embankments. These complex embankments reduced the ground settlement and the construction period. The possibility of lateral movements of the bridge abutments was checked and the design scheme was reviewed.

This is a fundamental study aiming at scrutinizing the effect of reinforcement and deformation characteristics of soft clayey foundation improved by vanous technical treatments. Among many methods proposed thus far, geotextile was selected for the purpose of improvement of the model soil foundation on which plate loading test was subsequently performed. Loading test has been carried out with the variation of the location and number of covering layers of geotextile, and actual values for ground deformation and geotextile effect were secured. As for technique on deformation analysis, elasto-plastic model for soil, elastic model for sand, and beam theory for geotextile were coupled with satisfactory results between observed and numerical values.
