Objectives: Phytic acid (IP6), a naturally occurring agent, has been previously reported as a potential alternative to ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA). However, its effect on adhesion to sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl)-treated dentin and its interactions with NaOCl have not been previously reported. Thus, in this study, the effects of IP6 on resin adhesion to NaOCl-treated dentin and the failure mode were investigated and the interactions between the used agents were analyzed. Materials and Methods: Micro-tensile bond strength (µTBS) testing was performed until failure on dentin treated with either distilled water (control), 5% NaOCl, or 5% NaOCl followed with chelators: 17% EDTA for 1 minute or 1% IP6 for 30 seconds or 1 minute. The failed specimens were assessed under a scanning electron microscope. The reaction of NaOCl with EDTA or IP6 was analyzed in terms of temperature, pH, effervescence, and chlorine odor, and the effects of the resulting mixtures on the color of a stained paper were recorded. Results: The µTBS values of the control and NaOCl with chelator groups were not significantly different, but were all significantly higher than that of the group treated with NaOCl only. In the failure analysis, a distinctive feature was the presence of resin tags in samples conditioned with IP6 after treatment with NaOCl. The reaction of 1% IP6 with 5% NaOCl was less aggressive than the reaction of the latter with 17% EDTA. Conclusions: IP6 reversed the adverse effects of NaOCl on resin-dentin adhesion without the chlorine-depleting effect of EDTA.

Sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) is widely used to disinfect seawater in power plant cooling systems in order to reduce biofouling, and in ballast water treatment systems to prevent transport of exotic marine species. While the toxicity of NaOCl is expected to increase by ongoing ocean acidification, and many experimental studies have shown how algal calcification, photosynthesis and growth respond to ocean acidification, no studies have investigated the relationship between NaOCl toxicity and increased $CO_2$. Therefore, we investigated whether the impacts of NaOCl on survival, chlorophyll a (Chl-a), and effective quantum yield in three marine phytoplankton belonging to different taxonomic classes are increased under high $CO_2$ levels. Our results show that all biological parameters of the three species decreased under increasing NaOCl concentration, but increasing $CO_2$ concentration alone (from 450 to 715 ${\mu}atm$) had no effect on any of these parameters in the organisms. However, due to the synergistic effects between NaOCl and $CO_2$, the survival and Chl-a content in two of the species, Thalassiosira eccentrica and Heterosigma akashiwo, were significantly reduced under high $CO_2$ when NaOCl was also elevated. The results show that combined exposure to high $CO_2$ and NaOCl results in increasing toxicity of NaOCl in some marine phytoplankton. Consequently, greater caution with use of NaOCl will be required, as its use is widespread in coastal waters.
The removal efficiency of herbicide glyphosate in a drinking water treatment system was investigated. Four major processes of a drinking water treatment system were selected and experiments were performed separately including; treatments by sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl), a sedimentation process by PAC (polyaluminum chloride), ozonation and a GAC (granular activated carbon) treatment. In the sodium hypochlorite experiment, about 50% of the glyphosate was removed by 2 mg/L of hypochlorite and more than 90% was eliminated when 5 mg/L of NaOCl was applied. Also, AMPA, the main metabolite of glyphosate, was treated with hypochlorite. More than 30% of the AMPA was removed by 2 mg/L of hypochlorite and 50% by 5 mg/L. In the PAC experiment, it was determined that more than 60% could be removed. Further experiments were performed and the results indicated that the removed amount was dependent upon the amount of soil and upon the properties of the soil especially that of clay minerals. Ozonation could oxidize glyphosate to its byproducts at about a level of 50%. In contrast, when 1 mg/L of glyphosate was treated with GAC, the amount removed was negligible. The results of this experiment were conclusive. We confirmed that drinking water, which has been contaminated with water polluted with glyphosate can be effectively purified by the application of the drinking water treatment processes currently used.
NaOCl (Sodium hydrochlorite) have similar smell of chloride and solution of straw color. And boiling point is $110^{\circ}C$, specific gravity is 1.0(50g/l)/1.1(100g/l), Value of pH is 12. NaOCl playa role as bleach, a oxidizer, a germicide, a decolorant, a deodorant, treatment of water supply and drainage, food addition agent because strong oxidation, bleaching, sterilization effect is had. When NaOCl is produced in electrolysis of seawater, this system is composed of injection system by directly electrolysis of salt water on the spot and sodium hydrochlorite generate a safe low concentration(0.4~0.8 %).
PURPOSE. The aim of this study was to compare the effects of different denture cleansers on the surface roughness and microhardness of various types of posterior denture teeth. MATERIALS AND METHODS. 168 artificial tooth specimens were divided into the following four subgroups (n=42): SR Orthotyp PE (polymethylmethacrylate); SR Orthosit PE (Isosit); SR Postaris DCL (double cross-linked); and SR Phonares II (nanohybrid composite). The specimens were further divided according to the type of the denture cleanser (Corega Tabs (sodium perborate), sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl), and distilled water (control) (n=14)) and immersed in the cleanser to simulate a 180-day immersion period, after which the surface roughness and microhardness were tested. The data were analyzed using the Kruskal-Wallis test, Conover's nonparametric multiple comparison test, and Spearman's rank correlation analysis (P<.05). RESULTS. A comparison among the denture cleanser groups showed that NaOCl caused significantly higher roughness values on SR Orthotyp PE specimens when compared with the other artificial teeth (P<.001). Furthermore, Corega Tabs resulted in higher microhardness values in SR Orthotyp PE specimens than distilled water and NaOCl (P<.005). The microhardness values decreased significantly from distilled water, NaOCl, to Corega Tabs for SR Orthosit PE specimens (P<.001). SR Postaris DLC specimens showed increased microhardness when immersed in distilled water or NaOCl when compared with immersion in Corega Tabs (P<.003). No correlation was found between surface roughness and microhardness (r=0.104, P=.178). CONCLUSION. NaOCl and Corega Tabs affected the surface roughness and microhardness of all artificial denture teeth except for the new generation nanohybrid composite teeth.
The effect of permanganate oxidation was investigated as water treatment strategy with a focus on comparing the reaction characteristics of NaOCl and sodium permanganate (NaMnO4) in algae (Monoraphidium sp., Micractinium inermum, Microcystis aeruginosa)-contained water. Flow cytometry explained that chlorine exposure easily damaged algae cells. Damaged algae cells release intracellular organic matter, which increases the concentration of organic matter in the water, which is higher than by NaMnO4. The oxidation reaction resulted in the release of toxin (microcystin-LR, MC-LR) in water, and the reaction of algal organic matter with NaOCl resulted in trihalomethanes (THMs) concentration increase. The oxidation results by NaMnO4 significantly improved the concentration reduction of THMs and MC-LR. Therefore, this study suggests that NaMnO4 is effective as a pre-oxidant for reducing algae damage and byproducts in water treatment process.
Two-step or one-step bonding systems generally inhibit curing process of dual-cured core build-up resin composite for their adhesive acidity. In addition this dual-cured core build-up resin composite can be applied to dentin of pulp chamber and root at the time that complete the endodontic treatment. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the influence of sodium hypochlorite on rnicrotensile bond strength of dual-cured core build-up resin composite. Extracted human molars were horizontally sectioned with 1mm thickness using low speed diamond saw. After the sectioned specimens were divided into 8 groups, adhesive systems (Clearfil SE-Bond, Prime&Bond NT[2-step, 1-step], Adper Prompt L-Pop) were then applied with or without sodium hypochlorite pretreatment. The treated specimen was filled with dual-cured core build-up resin composite (Luxacore, DMG corp., German). Then light cured for 40 seconds and soaked in $37^{\circ}C$ water bath for 24 hours. After the treated specimen was grinded with 1mm width and measured rnicrotensile bond strength by testing machine. Additionally 8 teeth were prepared for SEM evaluation. The results were as follows. : NaOCl treated groups generally had lower rnicrotensile bond strength but did not show any difference statistically except Adper Prompt L-Pop. When the teeth were treated by NaOCl, though the difference of applied adhesive system, it had no statistically significant difference within the NaOCl treated groups except the relation of between ClearFil SE-Bond adhesive system and Adper Prompt L-Pop adhesive system. In the SEM evaluation, NaOCl treated groups presented relatively long resin tags and incomplete hybrid layer formation generally.
Generally, a coolant of the nuclear power plant is manufactured by electrolyzing the sea water near the plant for making the sodium hypochlorite(NaOCl), which is used for sterilizing the bacteria and the shellfishes sticking to the drains or the pumps at the outlet of the cooling system due to $8-10^{\circ}C$ warmer temperature than the inlet sea water. During manufacturing the sodium hypochlorite, the hydrogen with the high purity is also produced at the anode side of the electrolyzer. This paper describes a novel power plant system combined with the polymer electrolyte membrane(PEM) fuel cell, the wasted hydrogen from the sea water electrolyzer and the wasted heat of the nuclear power plant. The present status over the exhausted hydrogen at twenty nuclear power plants in Korea was investigated in this study, from which an available power generation is estimated. Furthermore, the economic feasibility of the PEM fuel cell power plant is also evaluated by a current regulations over the power production and exchange using a renewable energy shown in Korea Power Exchange(KRX).
In endodontic treatment, calcium hydroxide has been used as intracanal medicament. Although calcium hydroxide should be removed thoroughly before permanent root canal filling, no effective method for its removal has been reported. Because of irregularity of root canal walls, root curvatures and anatomic variations, it is insufficient to remove calcium hydroxide from the canal wall only by mechanical instrumentation Considering the chemical effects of irrigants on calcium hydroxide, $Ca^{++}$ dissolving effect from two calcium hydroxide products is investigated, using dis- tilled water, NaOCl, citric acid and EDTA. Vitapex$^{(R)}$ 0.1g and calcium hydroxide 0.03g were dissolved in distilled water, 5% NaOCl, 50% citric acid and 17% EDTA respectively, at 1, 3, 5, 10min. time interval. The solution was filtered using filter paper(pore size $5{\mu}m$) and $Ca^{++}$ concentration was determined by ion chromatography. The result were as follows : 1. Distilled water, NaOCl, citric acid and EDTA abstracted more $Ca^{++}$ from calcium hydroxide than Vitapex$^{(R)}$ except NaOCl 1, 5, 10 time interval. 2. EDTA and citric acid abstracted more $Ca^{++}$ from Vitapex$^{(R)}$ and calcium hydroxide than distilled water or NaOCl. The overall result support the view that water-based calcium hydroxide product is easily removed than oil-based calcium hydroxide product and EDTA, citric acid are more effective in $Ca^{++}$ elution than NaOCl or distilled water.
Research was conducted to obtain t he optimum treatment Of sodium hypochlorite(NaOC I) at various temperatures in t he seed scarification for stimulating germination of zoysiagrass (Zocysia Japonica Steud ) seed. Morphological changes of seed coat were also examined by scanning electron micros cop(SEM). l. Differences in temperature of scarification with 2 .4% NaOCI showed little influence on promoting germination of seeds but seeds treated with 1% solution at l5˚C germinated less than that of higher temperatures. The promotion effect of 4% solution on germination was diminished when seeds were treated for 8 hours of more. The most favorable seed scarification unaffected hy temperature for enhancing germination was 4-6hours treatment at 4% solution in fresh seeds. 2. $GA_3$, treatment did not enhance germination of water-pretreated control seeds hut germination of seeds pretreated with NaOCI l was increased additional 10% or more hy$ GA_3$, Water pretreated control seeds treated with 50 mM hydrogen peroxide(H'O )germinated about 44%. In NaOCI treated seeds. $H_2$$O_2$ treatment increased germination additional l 0% or more. 3. NaOCI l and KOH treatment softened the seed coat and formed the pores hy removing the scab-like thikenings attached to the seed surface. These results suggest that the modes of action of NaOCl in the promotion of seed germination reside in it increase of the permeability of the seed coat, and in the provision of additional oxygen to the seed.
