  • The critical micelle concentrations(CMC*) and the counterion binding constants(B) in a micellar state of the mixed surfactant systems of sodium dodecylsulfate(SDS) with sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate(DBS) at 25℃ in pure water and in aqueous solutions of n-butanol were determined as a function of α1 (the overall mole fraction of SDS) by the use of electric conductivity method. Various thermodynamic parameters(Xi, γi, Ci, aiM, β, ΔHmix and ΔGm0 for the micellization of SDS/DBS mixtures were calculated and analyzed by means of the equations derived from the nonideal mixed micelle model. The effect of n-butanol on the mixed micellization of SDS/DBS mixtures have been measured and analyzed by comparing the values of the thermodynamic parameters in pure water with those in aqueous solutions of n-butanol(0.1 M, 0.2 M, and 0.3 M).

  • The critical micelle concentration(CMC) and the counterion binding $constant(\beta)$ at the CMC of the mixtures of Sodium dodecylsulfate(SDS) with Sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate(DBS) in aqueous solutions have been determined from the concentration dependence of electrical conductance at several temperatures from $15^{\circ}C$ to $35^{\circ}C.$ Thermodynamic parameters(${\Delta}C_p,\;{\Delta}G_m^{\circ},\;{\Delta}H_m^{\circ}$${\Delta}S_m^{\circ}$ and ${\Delta}C_p$), associated with the micelle formation of SDS/DBS mixtures, have been estimated from the temperature dependence of CMC and $\beta$ values. The measured values of ${\Delta}G_m^{\circ}\;and\;{\Delta}C_p$ are negative but the values of ${\Delta}S_m/^{\circ}$ are positive in the whole measured temperature region. The significance of these thermodynamic parameters and their relation to the theory of the micelle formation of SDS/DBS mixtures have been also considered.

  • The solubilization sites of some phenyl alkanols such as phenol, benzyl alcohol, phenethyl alcohol, 3-phenyl-1-propanol solubilized in 0.2 M aqueous sodium dodecylsulfate micelle solution was studied by two dimensional heteronuclear correlation spectroscopy (2D C-H COSY). The results show more quantitative and clear solubilization sites in the SDS micelle than previous results using $^1H$-NMR spectrum integration. We found that most of the phenyl alkanols penetrate into the core of SDS micelle, and the insertion depth was 6.5∼7.0 methylene units from ${\alpha}$-methylene.

  • Among various CE separation methods, micellar electrokinetic capillary chromatography(MECC) method using sodium dodecylsulfate(SDS) provides rapid and accurate separation of organic explosive constituents with easy. The running buffer was composed with 2.5 mM borate and 25mM SDS(pH 8.5). Addition of 1M urea and 10% organic modifiers (acetonitrile, methanol and ethanol) improves the resolution of adjacent explosive constituents. When 15 explosive constituents were developed in MECC, most constituents were separated successively while RDX/TNB and DNN/DEP were not, and detection limits of separated compounds are in range of 1 to 4 ppm.

  • Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-4-hydroxybutyrate) [P(3HB-co-4HB)] microspheres were prepared using solvent evaporation technique. P(3HB-co-4HB) with 3.9 mol% 4HB was synthesized by fed-batch culture of Ralstonia eutropha. The effects of concentration and type of surfactant (Tween 80, sodium dodecylsulfate, and polyvinyl alcohol), addition of dispersion stabilizer (Acacia), concentration of polymer and model drug (bovine serum albumin) on particle size of the microspheres and their in vitro drug release characteristics were investigated. The average particle size of the microspheres decreased with the addition of dispersion stabilizer and increased with the concentration of surfactant, drug and polymer. Amount of drug release increased with decreasing particle size of the microspheres.

  • The critical micelle concentration (CMC) and the counter ion binding constant (B) for the mixed micellizations of DBS (sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate), SDS (sodium dodecylsulfate), and Brij 30 (polyoxyethylene(4) lauryl ether) at $25^{\circ}C$ in pure water were determined by the use of electric conductivity and surface tension measuring methods. Various thermodynamic parameters ($X_i,\;{\gamma}i,\;C_i,\;a_i^M,\;{\beta}$, and ${\Delta}H_{mix}$) were calculated and compared with each other mixed surfactant system by means of the equations derived from the nonideal mixed micellar model. The results show that the SDS molecule interacts more strongly with Brij 30 molecule than DBS molecule and that the SDS/Brij 30 mixed surfactant system has the greatest negative deviation from the ideal mixed micellar model and the SDS/DBS mixed system has followed almost the ideal mixed micellar model.

  • To substitute animal test, skin equivalents (SEs) have been developed for skin irritation and corrosion test. Recently, we have developed new SEs containing Cervi cornus Colla (CCC). In the present study, we used the SEs for cutaneous cytotoxicity test. Sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS) or sodium carbonate was applied to the SEs-, and the epidermal damage by H&E and immunohistochemical stains was evaluated. Our results showed that SDS or sodium carbonate affected the epidermal part of SEs containing CCC in a dose-dependent manner and decreased the expression of p63. It is concluded that SEs containing CCC could be used for an alternative model of animal test and would be greatly helpful in the development of in vitro irritation and corrosion test.

  • Escherichia coli mrdAts and mrdBts mutants forming spherical cells at 42C, were employed to investigate the possible role of both inner and outer membrance structures in the determination of cell shape of gram-negative cells. Spherical cells, but not rod-shaped wild types, were specifically killed by anionic detergents, such as sarkosyl, sodium dodecylsulfate and sodium deoxycholate. From the spherical intact cells grown overnight at 42C, much more proteins were released by sakosyl.

  • The aggregation between cationic and anionic surfactants was studied by turbidimetric and nephelometric methods with emphasis on facile analysis of the surfactants and understanding of the mixed micellization. The turbidimetric titration of sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS) with cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) or cetylpyridinium bromide (CPB) showed maximum turbidity at equimolar composition in the SDS concentration range of 0.1-0.9 mM. The nephelometric titration of the same systems extended the limit of analysis to 0.001 mM. The sodium salts of decylsulfate and sulfonate gave similar maxima, but not at equimolar composition. The coexistence of equimolar aggregates and mixed micelles were shown over broad composition range. The aggregation and mixed micellization of the anionic/cationic surfactants mixtures depended sensitively on the hydrophobic character of the surfactants.

  • To analyze the genome of Cucumber mosaic virus(CMV) in pepper, we developed a new extraction method for double-stranded RNA(dsRNA). To isolate the dsRNA, 0.1g of pepper leaves homogenized with 1ml of 5${\times}$EXB extraction buffer[0.5M glycin, 0.5M NaCl, 5mM EDTA(pH9.0/NaOH), 10% Sodium N-lauryl salcosinate(NLS), 10% Sodium dodecylsulfate(SDS)] and purified with the 1/4 volume of phenol: chloroform: isoamylalcohol(25:24:1). dsRNAs from the aqueous phase was precipitated with isopropanol. This procedure was able to detect a minimal amount of dsRNA from CMV infected plant tissue and to distinguish different CMV satellite RNAs by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis(PAGE). Moreover, this method can be applied CMV infected in pepper or Rice dwarf virus (RDV) infected rice.
