The purpose of this study was to find out the information on nutrition labeling and how many calories and nutrients the high school students consumed for 1 day from cookies. A total of 74 male and female high school students in Suwon were surveyed and 56 cookies that they consumed were examined. Background data were collected by questionnaire, cookie intake by 24-hr recall, and the calories and nutrients content in cookies and the amount of intake by nutrition information on the wrapping paper of cookie. The statistical analysis for the data was done by SPSS 12.0. Energy contents in 1 serving size of cookie were $90{\sim}315\;kcal$, average of 170 kcal. The protein contents were $0{\sim}7\;g$, fat $2{\sim}20\;g$, cholesterol $0{\sim}55\;mg$, and sodium $30{\sim}390\;mg$ in 1 serving size of cookie. Most of the cookies(80%) examined contained no trans fat at all, which is desirable. Among the types of cookies, snacks contained higher quantities of calories and sodium, the pie contained more sugar and cholesterol, and the biscuit had more trans fat. One fourth of the cookies examined belonged to 'high calorie, low nutritious food' according to the criteria proposed by The Ministry for Health, Welfare and Family Affairs. Thus the excessive intake of cookies might result in nutritional imbalance. There were large differences in calorie intake among students, from zero who did not intake any cookies at all to maximum 818 kcal/day, an average of 75 kcal/day. When the students who did not intake cookies were excluded, energy 205 kcal. fat 10 g, sodium 177 mg were consumed from the cookie for a 1 day on average.

The purpose of this study was to analyze average kimchi intake, general characteristics, frequency of daily meal intake, intakes of vegetables and fruits, and nutrient intakes in four serving size groups based on data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2010~2012. The results showed an average amount of kimchi intake in subjects of 115.6 g, ranging from 0 g to 605.94 g. For daily meal intake except snacking according to kimchi serving size, all daily meal intakes increased significantly with increasing kimchi serving size (p<0.0001), and tendency of kimchi intake increased with more eating-out. As kimchi serving size increased, total intakes of vegetables and salted vegetables increased significantly (p<0.0001). However, unsalted vegetables intake did not show significant difference. Intake of fruits also increased with increasing kimchi serving size. As the serving size of kimchi increased, intakes of energy, carbohydrates, protein, fat, sodium, and potassium increased significantly (p<0.0001). For intake of sodium, intakes of all groups exceeded 2,000 mg, which is the recommended level for Koreans. Moreover, the fourth serving size group consumed three times (6,546.35 mg) more sodium than the recommended level.
The effect of heat treatment and acid leaching of siliceous mudstone on the purity of silica precursors, such as sodium silicate and silicic acid, was studied. As well as the temperatures for the heat treatment of siliceous mudstone, the concentrations of hydrochloric acid and sulfuric acid were varied to achieve the highest content of silicon in the precursors while minimizing energy and chemical consumption. It was found that the optimum conditions were achieved at the heat treatment temperature of $600^{\circ}C$ and hydrochloric acid of 1.56 M. The relative concentrations of silicon in the synthesized sodium silicate and silicic acid were as high as 99.2 and 99.5%, respectively.

Tunnel is the most energy-consuming structure in road due to the characteristic of using artificial lighting during day and night. Therefore, tunnel lights are being replaced by LED lamp that have advantages with respect to low power consumption. The best use of social overhead capital can be expected by considering the life cycle cost, because to tunnel structures are accompanied by a series of medium-to-long-term and continuous processes of replacing auxiliary facilities. In this study, the saving effect by LCC analysis was quantitatively analyzed by replacing tunnel light sources from high-pressure sodium lamps to LED lamps. The effect of reducing the replacement cycle by increasing the life of the lamps and the resulting maintenance cost is very significant, on replacing tunnel lighting light sources with LED lamp.

This paper is a result of research conducted on the 800,000 m3/d capacity of A Water Treatment Plant (WTP) and 400,000 m3/d capacity of B WTP plant in operation in the Nakdong River region. We evaluated the effect of algae broom on the WTP operation based on the running data of both WTP and the data on the pre-oxidation process field test for algae control using sodium permanganate (SPM) at the B WTP. The study results showed that during the algal bloom period, the coagulant dose increased by 102% in A WTP and 58% in B WTP, respectively, and the chlorine dose also increased by 38% and 29%, respectively, which may affect Total trihalomethane (THM) production. Data such as algal populations and Chl-a, residual chlorine and THM, algal populations, and ozone dose appeared also highly correlated, confirming that algal broom affects WTP operations, including water quality and chemical dosage. As a result of the field test of B WTP, THMs appeared lower than that of the control, suggesting the possibility of the SPM pre-oxidation process as an alternative to algae-related water quality management. Furthermore, in terms of GHG emissions due to energy consumption, it was observed that the pre-oxidation process using SPM was approximately 10.8%, which is a very low ratio compared to the pre-ozonation process. Therefore, these results suggest that the SPM pre-oxidation process can be recommended as an alternative to low-carbon water purification technology.
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Available data suggest that seasonal changes may influence the nutritional status and overall health of elderly individuals. Therefore, this study was conducted to investigate the effects of seasonal changes and related factors on energy and nutrient intake of older adults. SUBJECTS/METHODS: Individuals aged 65 years or over were prospectively enrolled in this single-center study (male: 11, female: 20). Data were collected between May 2013 and February 2014 during winter, spring, summer and autumn. Food consumption and biochemical parameters were taken during each season to assess the seasonal nutrition status of the elderly. Upon analysis of biochemical parameters (retinol, vitamin D and vitamin C), an high-performance liquid chromatography device was utilized whereas an Immulite 2000 device was utilized during analysis of serum folic acid and parathyroid hormone. RESULTS: Fruit, fat, egg and bread consumption varied seasonally in males and females (P < 0.05). During winter, daily energy intake was found to be greater than in other seasons in males (557 kcal) and females (330 kcal) (P < 0.05). Additionally, carbohydrates, vegetable protein, n-3 fatty acid and sodium intake increased in winter, while the n-6/n-3 ratio increased in summer among males (P < 0.05). Dietary fiber and sodium intake in winter, vitamin C, iron and zinc intake in spring, and cholesterol, retinol, vitamin D and niacin intake in autumn were found to be higher in females when compared to other seasons (P < 0.05). Serum parathyroid hormone level was higher in winter, and vitamin D level was higher in autumn in both genders (P < 0.05). In males, blood folic acid level was higher in winter, while vitamin C level was higher in females, and there was no seasonal variation in retinol concentration (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Food consumption and biochemical parameters showed significant seasonal variations in older adults. It is not clear if nutrition plans in older adults will benefit from consideration of seasonal changes in eating habits.
The Chlor-alkali (CA) membrane cell is a major electrolysis system to produce valued chemicals such as chlorine gas and sodium hydroxide. The CA membrane process has been attracted in the industries, since it has relatively low energy consumption when compared with other CA processes. The key component in CA process is perfluorinated sulfonic acid ionomer membranes, which provide ion-selectivity and barrier properties to produced gases. Unfortunately, there is limited information to determine which factors should be satisfied for CA applications. In this study, the influences of PFSA membranes on CA performances are disclosed. They include ion transport behaviors, gas evolution capability, and chemical/electrochemical resistances under CA operation conditions.
Purpose: This study verified the reliability and validity of the Diet Quality Index for Indian children (DQIIC). Methods: The study sample included 100 school going boys and girls (7-9 years). The dietary behavior of children was studied using a questionnaire and 24-hour dietary recall. The DQIIC comprises 21 items which aimed to assess the diet of Indian children on the basis of variety, adequacy of consumption of dietary components, and moderation in the amount of nutrients that are associated with diseases and dietary habits. The reliability of the DQIIC was assessed using the split half method, Cronbach's alpha, and test retest reliability. Content validity was evaluated using content validity ratio (CVR). Results: The intake of iron was found to be less than the recommended dietary allowances. There was frequent consumption of empty calorie packaged foods and higher than the recommended amount of sodium. Reliability of the DQIIC was 0.85 by split half method and the correlation coefficient for test retest reliability was 0.87. Cronbach's alpha was 0.62 and CVR was 0.85 for this index. Most of the children fell in the moderately healthy category. Conclusion: The DQIIC is a reliable and valid tool to assess the diet quality of Indian children between 7-9 years.
In order to investigate the effect of salinity on growth and osmoregulation of the sweetfish, Plecoglossus altivelis, the fish (post-larva, juvenile, adult) reared in seawater were directly transferred into the experimental rearing water of the different salinities (post-larva : $0\textperthousand$, $5\textperthousand$, $10\textperthousand$, $15\textperthousand$, $20\textperthousand$, $30\textperthousand$. juvenile : $0\textperthousand$, $\10textperthousand$, $20\textperthousand$, $30\textperthousand$. adult : $0\textperthousand$, $15\textperthousand$, $35\textperthousand$, respectively). Fish samples were taken in time courses after transfer for blood and body fluid collection. The changes of sodium, potassium concentration and osmolality of the body fluid and plasma, muscle water content, gonadosomatic index (GSI) and hepatosomatic index (HSI) in the experimental fish were observed in time courses. Growth rate of the post-larva in $\5~25\textperthousand$ were faster than in $0\textperthousand$ (P<0.05). Survival rate was very low in $0\textperthousand$ (P<0.05). No fish survived more than 50 days after transferred into $0\textperthousand$. The concentration of sodium, potassium and osmolality in body fluid of the juvenile sweetfish were slightly decreased at 0.25 day after the beginning of the maintainable level of sodium, potassium and osmolality were $36.4\pm6.2 mM/\ell, 47.5\pm0.7 mM/\ell, 366.3\pm19.1 mOsm/kg, respectively. Except potassium concetration, fish in $0\textperthousand$ and $10\textperthousand$ displayed the pattern of hypoosmotic regulation. Growth rate and survival rate of juveniles of $30\textperthousand$ are significantly low than other groups (P<0.05). The concentration of sodium, potassium and osmolality in plasma of adult sweetfish were slightly decreased at 1 day after the beginning of the maintainable level of sodium, potassium and osmolality were $159.0\pm2.5 mM/\ell, 5.8\pm0.9 mM/\ell, 338.1$\pm13.3 mOsm/kg respectively. Compared with these values, fish in $0\textperthousand$ and $15\textperthousand$ displayed hypoosmotic regultion. Growth and survival rate of adult in $35\textperthousand$ are significantly low than other experimental groups. GSI was the highest in $15\textperthousand$ after 60 days. HSI was the lowest in $35\textperthousand$. With decreased salinities, oxygen consumption was found to be decreased in the other experimental groups compared to the more than $30\textperthousand$.

This study was carried out to compare the differences in dietary habits, food consumption patterns, nutrient intakes, and serum lipid levels according to kimchi consumption in college students. The anthropometric and biochemical parameters of blood samples from the subjects were investigated, as well as a kimchi frequency questionnaire, 24-hour food recall and dietary habits. The subjects were divided into two groups according to their kimchi consumption level based on the quantitative kimchi frequency questionnaire-kimchi consumption under 50 g group and kimchi consumption over 50 g group. As kimchi consumption increased, consumption of white rice (p<0.05) and noodles increased, whereas the consumption of confections decreased. The kimchi consumption over 50 g group was more likely to eat balance meals (p<0.05), and consume fruits and vegetables (p<0.05) than the other group. On the other hand, the kimchi consumption under 50 g group was more likely to consume milk than the kimchi consumption over 50 g group. The energy and sodium (p<0.05) intakes in the kimchi consumption over 50 g group were higher compared to the kimchi consumption under 50 g group. Kimchi consumption was positively correlated with HDL-cholesterol and negatively correlated with body fat, BMI, and blood glucose level. In addition, kimchi consumption was positively correlated with cereals, meats, and vegetables intakes, and negatively correlated with milk and dairy product intakes. However, there was no significant difference between the two groups.
