In this study, we investigated the effects of perceived health and ageism experience of the elderly on successful aging, which were respectively presumed as predictors of biomedical model and psychosocial model of the successful aging. As important research results, firstly, negligence among ageism experience constructs appeared higher than other discriminatory experiences. Secondly, male showed significantly higher discriminatory experience than female in the area of 3 constructs such as property, negligence and employment ageism. Also there were some different discriminative experiences in the area of perceived health and ageism in terms of age, wealth and education. Finally, the results of hierarchical multiple regression hired to find out factors influencing successful aging showed that the factors such as sex, wealth, perceived health and property discrimination of ageism affected successful ageing. Based on the analytic results, we verified that perceived health, i.e., predictor of biomedical model had higher effect on successful aging than ageism experience, i.e., predictor of psychosocial model of successful aging. Thus, it was suggested that health promotion policy should be considered with priority and also combating ageism as well for successful aging.
The purpose of this study is to examine which factors determine self-rated health(SRH) among Korean elderly focusing on gender differences. To achieve this purpose, it uses the Hallym Longitudinal Study of Aging, wave 4 in 2009. Participants aged 65 and over from wave 4 were selected(N=986, male 407, female 579). From wave 4, all variables were selected except for respondents' education which was from wave1. In analyses, $x^2$ or t-test were conducted to examine whether independent variables significantly differ by SRH. Then, since a dependent variable consisted of two categories-being healthy or not being healthy, logistic regressions were run. What makes gender differences in the link of independent variables to SRH were 75-84 age group, education, and IADLs. For females, 75-84 age group rated their health as worse compared to 65-74 age group, but this age group did not have significant effect on SRH for males. Females graduating from junior high school were more likely to higher rate their health compared to their counterparts. However, education was not significant for males. Instrumental activities of daily living(IADLs) is one of variables affecting SRH by making gender differences. Female having problems with IADLs were more likely to be significantly negatively rate their health compared to males. Through focusing on age, education, IADLs making gender difference in evaluating health, governments needs to support males and females differently.
This study examined the effectiveness of the cognitive activity integration program to delay the progression of the mild demented elderly. The subjects were divided into experimental group and comparative group for 12 cases of mild dementia, and the cognitive activity integration program was conducted for 8 weeks and compared with the MMSE-K, ADL & IADL, CDR and GDS scales. The results show that the effectiveness and continuity of the program are as follows. First, as an implication of practical dimension, integrated program of fusion and complexity is more effective than cognitive activity program of single domain. Second, the cognitive activity integration program must be continuously provided to maintain its effectiveness. Third, the cognitive activity integration program is as important as the practice process. It is necessary to develop and disseminate a cognitive activity integration program that reflects fusion and complex treatment techniques applicable to the elderly with mild dementia by practical suggestion. Policy suggestions are needed to continue the ongoing cognitive activity integration program, to maintain effectiveness, and to delay the progress of dementia.
This study aims to find the structure of social disussion on government 'Senior job program' by analyzing 1107 newspaper articles on 'senior job program' from 11 major newspaper articles and 8 financial newspapers. Topic modeling via latent dirichlet allocation model was employed for analysis and as result, 5 latent topics were extracted as follows : general information, local government project propaganda, senior life related issues, employment creation effect and market relations. Until 2015, most of the articles focused on the first two topics, indicating not much discourse was formed concerning the characteristics of the program. However, after 2015, the third topic started to increase and after the launch of Moon Jae In government, there has been a drastic increase in the employment creation related topic indicating that current social discourse mirrored by the media is definitely focused on employment creation aspect of senior job program. Based on the result, this study suggests the necessity to increase the quality and also enhance employment aspects of Senior job program.
The present study is designed to explore restructuring direction of the old-age income maintenance system and development direction of the Seniority Pension Scheme(SPS) in Korea. While the SPS is trifling scheme with tiny benefit amount and small budget, the SPS has important role that function as only public income maintenance scheme for both the low income class and the excluded from public pension and public assistance at present stage because of immature National Pension. This study starts with the research question why serious mis-matching problem between needs and resources in old-age income maintenance system occur. Thus this study explores fundamental change direction of the old-age income maintenance system which is coincide with further situation change(demography, labour market, family structure). Also this study explores desirable SPS's development direction as taking into account relation with other public old-age income maintenance system. This paper suggests basic direction of old-age income maintenance system as follows: principle of universal and individual security; principle of sustainability; principle of equity. Under general principle, this paper also proposes largely two development scenario of the SPS. The one is to maintain present transitional and provisional scheme with trying scheme's substantiality. The other is to change into permanent old-age income maintenance scheme for the excluded public pension and public assistance. At this point it is the public pension's role that the SPS's development direction is determined. If the public pension keep one pension per one earner as present system, non-contribution pension as present SPS should maintain continuously. However, if the public pension reorganize into basic pension of one pension per one person and earning-related pension, the SPS should be managed temporarily until mature of public pension. Therefore whether the public pension play basic security role for all elderly or not will determine the SPS development direction.
There has been a dramatic increase in public awareness regarding dementia during recent years. However, dementia remains a family affair and patients do not receive adequate care in Korea. This study aims to assist patients and their caregivers by establishing Home and Community based Long-Term Care in a city. The data collected for analysis include five main categories: dementia prevalence, limitations of daily activities of patients, burden of caregivers, the services that patient's family want to utilize, the resources that handle dementia in the community. Major findings can be summarized as follows: 1)The prevalence rate of dementia for elderly people is 13.1 per 100 persons. Alzheimer's disease amount to 38.9% of dementia patients and vascular dementia account for 36.7% of them 2)Eight out of ten patients have mild dementia. Almost all patients have normal ADL. IADL, however, shows different picture. In every items of IADL, about 60% of patients reveals some limitations. 3)The proportion of patients who had medical diagnosis is as low as 20%. Families of patients think dementia as normal aging process and medical doctors in the community do not give special concern to dementia patients. 4)Caregivers does not have proper social support. They suffer from long care time, experience large obstacles in respect of health, daily living, and social activity. 5)Health center and Community welfare center have launched some programs-consultation, home-visiting nursing, day care center, voluntary force mobilization and so on-for dementia patients. But they do not perform expected roles and functions because of lack of skilled personnels and inadequate coordination of relevant organizations for dementia care. 6)Families of dementia patients prefer home helper and home-visiting nurse to hospitalization. For the future, however, demand for institution-based long-term services will increase. We develope community dementia care model based on above findings as follows: 1)Health center execute community cardiovascular control program for the prevention of vascular dementia. 2)Refer to epidemiologic characteristics of patients and preference of family, the most urgent task for dementia care in this city is to expand and organize Home and Community based Long-Term Care. 3)For the continuous and comprehensive care, care plan for a patient must be prepared. Case management team should be builded to prepare this plan and coordinate relevant resources. 4)Special long-term care unit for dementia will be needed in a near future. This unit should have multiple functions, such as day-care center, short stay facility, training center for relevant personnels, besides long-term nursing home considering effective care of dementia and efficient operation of the facility. 5)Voluntary workers deserve their due efforts. Incentive mechanisms must be developed to activate voluntary activities.
With the rapid progress of the aging society in Korea, the silver generation is emerging as another class of users in the new population structure. This is a social issue to be dealt with, and the effect of such a change is being observed dearly in the design area. In addition, there are increasing demands for consideration of minor groups of users including the elderly, the disabled, the left-handed, children and pregnant women and nursing mothers, who have been treated as the weak. Such a human-centered idea may be the manifestation of the recovery of humanity and the self-realization of human beings through experiences and reflections of the industrial society of the past. The present study examined the tendency of design standardization centering on universal design, which has emerged in response to user-centered social needs, and suggested general considerations for the necessity of introducing such standards. These days the meanings of standardization are not limited to quality, performance, safety and economic aspect. Standardization is required to consider the diversity and the welfare of human beings. In addition, one of the important functions of standardization is to provide designers with important clues and guidelines for designing. In reality, however, standardization has been rejected by the circle of design for the reason that it deters free creation, so research on the introduction of standardization has been at standstill. As ISO/IEC Guide71 was published in November 2001, based on which, the Korea Standards Association established KS A ISO/IEC Guide71 without changing its contents. In companies' manufacturing activities, the progress of standardization in connection to universal design is growing more important. However, usefulness and interchangeability for the absolute majority resulting from standardization are incomparable. Lastly, the realization of universal design requires human-centered design mind, based on users' experiences and needs, the characteristics of the human bodies and inconvenient elements rather than standards for the sake of standardization.
The purpose of this research is to analyze the overall problems at the moment of October 2008, and then to find the improvements of home-help services of the Long-Term Care Insurance(LTCI), which has been revealed many problems since it was released in July 2008. The research uses the literature survey which analyzes 2nd-hand materials studied by other people already, and survey research was executed from active social workers in the area of LTCI. Based on the policy analysis framework of Gilbert and Specht, all the data are analyzed in the scopes of client·benefit(service)·finance·transferring system. This research has found the problems in each scope of home-help services of the LTCI. Firstly, the client system has some problems in mismatching between registered and service clients, estimating client number, and judging service levels. Secondly, the service system reveals deficiency in professionality of social workers, service quality lowering by loose qualification criteria on workers, non-reasonable limitation of service time available, and the same fare system applied to visiting-help service in spite of different levels. Thirdly, in financing system, clients need to pay additional money to get extra services such as meal, hair cutting, bathing etc., due to government financial support stopped, some organizations have to reduce services and replace full-time workers to part-time ones, which makes the service quality worse. Lastly, in the transferring system, the management system for service quality is not well prepared. There are too much competion because of allowing too many home-help service organizations and care worker academies. The suggestions that this research has found to improve the policy are as follows. ① It is desirable to make the registered clients the service ones as many as possible in the long term perspective. ② The LTCI organization requires more workers and higher professionality. ③ Many elderly people who are not eligible now require connection system to be more served. ④ Management system and service manual for care worker are to be developed. ⑤ Laws related to the service contents and process should be modified, the proportion of client charge needs to adjust. ⑥ Home-help service organization licensed by the LTCI needs to be financially supported publicly. ⑦ Monitoring system to home-help service organization needs to be strengthened. ⑧ Evaluation tools to home-help service organization and workers is required. ⑨ Specification to open the home-help service organization needs to be more strict.
The purpose of this study is to examine income composition elements, poverty rate, and the effects of the transfer income on poverty decrease comparing grandparents-grandchildren households with living alone, couple, and living with adulthood children. Data come from the first(2005) and the second(2007) Korean Retirement and Income Study(KReIS) and the effects of poverty decrease is examined through reconstruction of LIS income definition. The main findings are as follows. First, the total income of the grandparents-grandchildren in 2006 is the lowest and about one-fourth of the households living with adulthood children. Second, the labor income of all households are increasing but the only grandparents-grandchildren's labor income is decreasing. Third, three of ten in grandparents- grandchildren households are in poverty, the poorest households's type is the grandparents-grandchildren in 2006. Fourth, four of ten in grandparents-grandchildren is able to escape poverty after including private and public transfer income. Especially, the effects of the public transfer income in grandparents-grandchildren households is lower in 2006 than in 2004, thus the role of public income security is strongly needed. Existing research was that the poorest type among the elderly group was the living-alone households, but this results show that grandparents -grandchildren households are the poorest group. Thus, income security policy is highly needed for poor skipped-generation households.
The purpose of this study was to establish an Improvement Plan to determine the cause of the abuse occurred for the elderly who live in urban areas, and analyzed by type. This study was conducted to survey targeted the more than 65-year-old man as the center of Seoul Mapo area. The independent variables in the research model is elder abuse causes, the sociological characteristics as control variables population was the dependent variable in the elderly abuse. As a result; First, investigate the differences in the cause and the cause of elder abuse according to demographic characteristics. The causes of elder abuse, age of the higher age group showed high levels of elder abuse causes. Showed that less than a high school education than graduate school. Second, investigate the factors influencing the occurrence of elder abuse experiences of the subjects. Personal factors of elder abuse causes of those surveyed, family environmental factors, social, and refers to the result that the higher the level of cultural factors increase the occurrence of elder abuse experience. Third, investigate the differences in the cause and the cause of elder abuse according to demographic characteristics. The causes of elder abuse, age of the higher age group showed that the level of elder abuse occurs and causes high experience. Fourth, investigate the factors influencing the occurrence of elder abuse experiences of the subj ects. This personal factors of elder abuse causes of those surveyed, family environmental factors, social, and refers to the results of the higher levels of cultural factors that increase the occurrence of elder abuse experience. In conclusion, elder abuse is personal factors, environmental factors, family, social and cultural factors, the higher the level can be seen that type of elder abuse Elder abuse occurs, formed by many, accordingly. Therefore, in order to improve elder abuse should be healing the cause according to the type of elder abuse appears essentially as a result from this research.
