Influences of Social Capitals Affecting Self-esteem and Psychological Wellbeing of the elderly (노인의 사회자본이 자존감과 심리적 복지감에 미치는 영향)

  • This study attempted to study the relation between the social capitals and self esteem, psychological wellbeing of the elderly. This study took a questionnaire survey to 162 elderly persons over 65 years old in Busan Metropolitan City. The results of the impact of social capitals upon mental health of the elderly were as follows. For the social capitals and self esteem, formal reliability, formal network and the norm, women had significantly positive(+) impact on self esteem. For the social capitals and psychological wellbeing, formal reliability, women had significantly positive(+) impact on psychological wellbeing, while the norm had significantly negative (-) impact on psychological wellbeing. Based on such results, this study suggested meaning and necessity to construct the social capitals and its activation for the improvement of psychological health of the elderly. Finally, it remarked the limits of the study and the suggestions for the further research direction.

Effects of the Physical and Social Characteristics of Elderly Women on Self-Esteem and Life Satisfaction (여성 노인의 신체적·사회적 특성이 자아존중감 및 삶의 만족도에 미치는 영향)

  • This study analyzed the factors of the physical and social characteristics, self-esteem as well as life satisfaction of elderly women, and analyzed the effects of the physical and social characteristics on self-esteem and life satisfaction. The survey was conducted from January 10 to February 10, 2011 among the elderly women aged 60 or older in the Guri-si and its environs of Gyeonggi-do, and 380 responses were used in the data analysis. The statistical analysis methods were frequency analysis, factor analysis, reliability analysis, correlation analysis, t-test, ANOVA, and multiple regression analysis. As a result, the physical characteristics of elderly women were classified by the activities of daily living(ADL), physical function, and disease status. The social characteristics of elderly women were classified by the religious and social activities. ADL, physical function, religious and social activities were shown to influence the self-esteem. In addition, ADL, physical function, and religious activities influenced the life satisfaction of elderly women.

The effects of SNS use and the individual differences on the social connectedness (개인 성향에 따른 SNS 이용과 사회적 연결 효과)

  • This study empirically explores the effects of SNS use and the individual differences as the self-esteem on the social connectedness. The study results show that the higher self-esteem, the more use the Instagram and the Kakao Talk, which implies that the individual who has the more pro-social propensity uses the more diverse SNS. In contrast, the twitter shows the opposite pattern compared to the Instagram and Kakao Talk in terms of the SNS use according to the degree of the self-esteem. It also shows that women use the more SNS and the cell phone compared to the men do, whereas men use the more Internet than women do. The study results show that the more SNS use and the higher self-esteem, the higher social connectedness. Among the diverse SNS, only the Instagram shows the statistically positive effect on the social connectedness, which implies that the more the Instagram use, the more active in off-line social meetings.

The Effects of Follow-Up Care on Social Support, Self-esteem and Maternal Confidence in Low Birth-weight Infant's Mothers (추후관리를 받은 저출생체중아 어머니의 양육자신감, 사회적지지 및 자아존중감 비교)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of follow-up care on the social support, self-esteem and maternal confidence in mothers of low birth weight infants. Method: This study applied a quasi-experiment study method to examine the pre-post intervention effects. Eighty-eight mothers whose infants were below 2.5kg of Low birth weight were studied. The period for the data collection was from July to December in 2003. Self Reported Survey and Face to Face Interview by the highly trained home Visiting Nurses were used for this study. Result: Most of the participants reported statistically significant improvements in the score of social support, self-esteem and maternal confidence after they received the intervention. Conclusion: Longitudinal study for the mothers of low birth weight infants might reveal more comprehensive findings. Moreover, follow-up care, which is linked with community health care services, is needed to continue the post hospital care services. Additionally, qualified and professional intervention programs should be provided to consider the characteristics of mothers of low birth weight infants.

Children's Parent-related Stress, Social Support and School Adjustment according to Self-esteem of Children with Handicap & Nonhandicap Parents (장애부모 아동과 일반아동의 자아존중감에 따른 부모관련 스트레스, 사회적 지원 및 학교적응)

  • This study investigates the differences in parent-related stress, social support, and school adjustment according to self-esteem of children with disabled and non-disabled parents. The data were collected from 176 students between 4th and 6th grade in Chungbuk area. For a data analysis, mean, frequency, percent, three-way ANOVA, and Pearson's correlation were used. The results show that children's perceived parent-related stress, social support, and school adjustment are varied according to their self-esteem. Those with higher self-esteem were found to have tusker perception level in social support and school adjustment. On the contrary, they were found to have lower level in parent-related stress. The findings indicate further that girls have a closer relationship with their teachers than boys and that children with disabled parents have a closer relationship with their teachers than those with non-disabled parents. However, as opposed to prediction, parental disability itself caused no difference in the level of parent-related stress.

Influence of R&D Employees' Social Network and Self-Esteem on Organizational Commitment and Career Orientation (R&D 인력의 사회적 네트워크와 자아존중감이 조직몰입과 경력지향성에 미치는 영향)

  • The effective management of R&D employees is critical for a small or medium sized firm's sustainable growth. R&D employees have professional skills and choose expertise-oriented or management-oriented careers in the process of organizational socialization. This study synthetically verifies the direct and indirect effects of R&D employees' social network and self-esteem on their career orientation by organizational commitment based on social network theory and social recognition theory. The research model has been analyzed through structural equation modeling using survey responses from 220 R&D employees at small- and medium-sized firms in Korea. The analysis results show that internal network activities have direct and indirect impacts on organizational commitment and career orientation, but external network activities do not have significant effects on self-esteem, organizational commitment, or career orientation. There is no consensus in prior studies on whether expert orientation and management orientation are distinct concepts. In this study, these two types of orientation are verified as distinct concepts. It is also found that R&D employees' internal network activities are significant factors for a company's growth. A company should implement an educational system of roles and duties using which individuals can pursue career progression. In addition, it is necessary to provide career development programs such as job rotation, mentoring, and career counseling.

Structural Relationships among Variables Influencing Adjustment to School Life in Children from Multicultural Families - Daegu Gyeongbuk Area- (다문화 가정 아동의 학교생활적응 관련변인들 간의 관계구조분석 - 대구.경북지역을 중심으로 -)

  • This study investigated the structural relationships between parental attitude, social support, self-esteem, and levels of adjustment to school life of children from multicultural families. Participants were 177 elementary school children from multicultural families in 1st to 6th grade of elementary school in the Daegu-Gyeongbuk area of South Korea. The major findings were as follows. 1) Parenting attitude, social support, and self-esteem had direct effects on levels of children's adjustment to school life. 2) Parental attitudes and social support had direct effects on children's levels of self-esteem. 3) Parental attitudes and social support also had indirect effects on levels of adjustment to school life of these children. This study suggested that various concern and supports from multi level of society are required to improve adjustment to school life in children from multicultural families.

The Effects of Bullying on the Life Satisfaction of Multicultural Adolescents: The Mediation Effects of Self-esteem and Social Withdrawal

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the mediating effects of social withdrawal and self-esteem in the relationship between the experiences of group bullying victimization damage and life satisfaction of multicultural adolescents and to find ways to improve the level of life satisfaction of multicultural adolescents. To this end, a structural equation model analysis was conducted using panel data for the 6th year of multicultural youth (2016) to verify the mediating effects. Looking at the results of the analysis, it was confirmed that self-esteem had a statistically significant complete mediating effects. Based on these analysis results, implications for improving the level of life satisfaction of multicultural adolescents were presented.

Mediating Effect of Self-esteem on the Teacher-Young Child Relationship and Self-regulation Ability of Young Children (교사유아관계와 유아의 자기조절능력 간의 관계에서 자아존중감의 매개효과)

  • This study examined the mediating effects of self-esteem on the teacher-young child relationship and self-regulation ability of young children. A survey was conducted on a random sample of 252 young children aged 3-5 years attending a nursery in Gwang-ju, Korea. Based on the data, Person's correlations between variables were analyzed, and hierarchical regression analyses were conducted to identify the direct and indirect effects of the teacher-young child relationship and self-esteem on the self-regulation ability of the young children. First, there were positive correlations among the teacher-young child relationship (intimacy) and self-esteem as well as self-regulation ability. There were negative correlations among the teacher-young child relationship (conflict, dependence) and self-esteem as well as self-regulation ability. Second, self-esteem partially mediated the correlation between the teacher-young child relationship and self-regulation ability. The results suggest that self-esteem may affect the self-regulation ability of young children as a mediating response to the teacher-young child relationship.

Comparison of the Factors Influencing Children's Self-esteem between Two Parent Families and Single Parent Families (양부모 가정과 한부모 가정 학령기 아동의 자아존중감에 영향을 미치는 요인 비교)

  • Purpose: This study was done to compare factors influencing children's self-esteem between two parent families and single parent families. Methods: The participants were 692 children aged 11 to 13 yr (388 in two parent families and 304 in single parent families) recruited from 20 community agencies and 5 elementary schools in Gyeonggi Province and Seoul City, South Korea. Data were collected from May to July, 2007 using a survey questionnaire containing items on self-esteem, internal control, problematic behavior, school record, family hardiness, parent-child communication and social support. The data were analyzed using SPSS 15.0 program and factors affecting children's self-esteem were analyzed by stepwise multiple regression. Results: Scores for the study variables were significantly different between the two groups. The factors influencing children's self-esteem were also different according to family type. For two parent families, internal control, problematic behavior, school record, and parent-child communication significantly predicted the level of self-esteem (adjusted $R^2$=.505, p<.001). For single parent families, social support, family hardiness, internal control, problematic behavior, school record, and parent-child communication significantly predicted the level of self-esteem (adjusted $R^2$=.444, p<.001). Conclusion: Nurse working with children should consider family type-specific factors influencing their self-esteem.
