Addressing User Engagement in Social Media Platforms with Cultural Differences Based on Hofstede's Dimensions

  • This paper proposes the presence and importance of cultural differences to address user engagement in worldwide social media platforms. Based on Hofstede's cultural dimensions, this paper addresses their new meanings in the context of user engagement in social media. Our propositions address two research questions: (1) how do cultural dimensions, displayed on social media platforms, differ across national cultures?; (2) what different preferences the social media platforms have in terms of which cultural dimensions promote or suppress user engagement? User engagement in social media platforms is explained by the cultural differences in terms of the four cultural dimensions: individualism vs. collectivism, uncertainty avoidance, power distance, and masculinity vs. femininity. Implications are also discussed for research and practice.

A Conceptualization of Social Media Fatigue and Its Dimensions

  • Purpose - This study aims to conceptualize the construct of social media (SM) fatigue. Design/methodology/approach - A qualitative approach is employed to understand how SM users currently perceive (or interpret) the goals of SM usage and to conceptualize SM fatigue and its dimensions. We collected data through in-depth interviews of three SM users and group discussions among eighty SM users. Findings - we draw a definition of SM fatigue from a resource view that excessive SM use might lead to SM fatigue by depleting the internal resources of SM users. Further, through the analysis of the qualitative data from interviews and group discussions, we find the multi-dimensional nature of SM fatigue and identify five dimensions of SM fatigue-fatigue from the social obligation to interact with people, the importance of self-appearance, the quality of information, the quantity of information, and undesirable events-and common sources of fatigue in each dimension. Research implications or Originality - The conceptualization of SM fatigue elaborated in this study could enable scientific exploration of the role of SM fatigue in users' attitudes or behavior formation and change. On a practical front, this study would be valuable to companies by facilitating systematic investigations of their customers' fatigue through the lens of the SM fatigue dimensions.

The Study on Social Class and Conspicious Consumption Related to Dimensions of Clothing Price (사회계층과 과시적 소비 및 의복가격차원에 관한 연구 - 여대생을 중심으로 -)

  • In this study, we examined relationship among social class, conspicious consumption, dimensions of clothing price, and clothing buying behavior. The data were obtained by 290 female college students using questionnaire. The questionnaire were consist of four parts, dimensions of clothing price, conspicious consumption, clothing buying behavior, demographic factors. And the data were analysed with frequency, $x^2$-test, factor analysis, cluster analysis, ANOVA and Duncan test. The results were as follows. First, there was significant differences in social class and their attitude on dimensions of clothing price. Upper class consumers evaluate clothing price as Quality and dignity, on the other hand, lower class consumers perceived it as tendency for discount. Second, clothing selective standards was founded significantly different in social class. Clothing symbolic factor was more important to the upper class then lower class. Third, upper class consumers had a tendency of purchasing more clothes than lower class, and spend more money on clothing. Fourth, there was significant differences in conspicious consumption group and their attitude on dimensions of clothing price. Fifth, when conspicious consumption tendency is higher, importance of clothing price is highly perceived by college student. Sixth, Amount of clothing purchase and clothing expenditure were significantly different in conspicious consumption group. Consumers tend to buy more clothes and spend more money on clothes when they had high tendency in conspicious consumption.

Role of Consumer's Social Risk Perceptions in Retailing Private Label Brands

  • The study aims to investigate the role of consumer's social risk perceptions in retailing private label brands. Since private label brands are exclusively available at retail stores, consumers make their purchase decisions regarding them based on the image of that retail outlet. While buying them, risk perceptions are influenced by the retail store's image. The study identifies various retail store dimensions. For this purpose, primary data was collected using a survey questionnaire that was administered to a representative sample of retail store consumers in Riyadh. The data was analyzed and exploratory factor analysis was applied using SPSS 25 version to extract store image dimensions. The results showed six significant dimensions of retail store image namely 'Sales Staff', 'Promotion', 'Store Environment', 'Store Services', 'Product Assortment', and 'Customer Convenience'. Regression Analysis was performed and the effect of these retail store image dimensions was tested on social risk perceptions of consumers. Results indicate that store image dimensions significantly influence consumer's perceived social risk perceptions. However, the relationship is not consistent across all the six identified store image dimensions. The study brings forth several valuable consumer insights and the findings of the study have some very interesting and practical implications for retailers.

Development of a Simplified Version of SC-IQ in Korea (SC-IQ의 간이 측정방법 개발)

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to examine the compositional fitness and independence of the original six dimensions and the newly-designed six dimensions of Integrated Questionnaire for the Measurement of Social Capital[SC-IQ], and to explore the more simplified version for convenient use in public health-related social capital studies. Methods: This study reanalyzed social capital items included in a 2004 community health survey of K-city conducted by Hallym Health Services Research Center. Data was collected from 1,000 adults using core questions of SC-IQ. Explanatory factor analyses to all questions were done, and the new six dimensions were established. Confirmatory factor analyses[CFA] were done on the original and new six dimensions. And then reliability and validity test were done. SPSS 15.0 and AMOS 7.0 were used. Results: The final CFA module to the new SC-IQ exhibited Root Mean Square Error of Approximation[RMSEA] 0.028 and only compositional fitness and independence, and was composed of four dimensions and eight questions, and covers all elements of social capital including structural, cognitive, operational, outcome, bonding and bridging elements. Conclusion: This study demonstrates the utility of a new, simplified version of SC-IQ as well as its convenience.

Dimensions of Corporate Social Responsibility and Market Performance: Evidence from the Indonesia Stock Exchange

  • This study aims to examine the relationship between certain dimensions of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) with market performance, measured by Tobin's Q, on companies within various industries in Indonesia. This study disaggregates CSR into 7 dimensions: environment, energy, occupational safety and health, employee, product, community, and general. Samples consisted of 385 companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) during 2007-2014. OLS analysis shows that CSR contributes greatly to the formation of market performance of consumer goods, agriculture, and miscellaneous industries. The dimensions of CSR contribute differently to the formation of Q ratios in different industries. We also found that there are differences in the speed of effect of several dimensions of CSR on the formation of market performance; some CSR dimensions give immediate effect while others are lagged.

Physical, Mental and Social Health of Korean Rural Elderly with a Focus on Gender and Age-group Differences (농촌노인의 성과 연령에 따른 신체적.정신적.사회적 건강의 상호관계)

  • The purpose of this study is to examine how the rural elderly assess the multi-dimensions of health. This includes the physical, mental and social dimensions of health, correlations among them, and whether there are gender differences and age-group (60's, 70's, 80 and over) differences. For this purpose, survey data was gathered from 881 rural elderly who live in a village. The statistical methods used for data analysis were descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA and correlations. The major findings of this study are as follows: Physical health was measured by self-rated health, ADL, IADL, and farmer symptoms. The respondents classified as 80 and over and female perceived their physical health more negatively. Mental health was perceived somewhat positively in general but female participants perceived their mental health more negatively than males. Social health of the rural elderly was relatively positive in comparison to the other dimensions of health. The rural elderly engaged in many social activities, and the majority of them had many social support networks composed of more than 12 persons. Relationships among the physical, mental and social health dimensions were different. The correlation of physical and mental health and the correlation of social and psychological health were statistically significant. However, the correlation of physical and social health had no significant meanings.

  • Social capital contains relational, structural and cognitive dimensions. This study regards social capital as diminishing factor in innovation resistance. Trust, structuring individual tie and vision sharing which are representatives of three dimensions of social capital diminish innovation resistance. So innovation becomes more successful.

The Relationship between Children's Gender role Attitude and Social Competency (아동의 성역할 태도와 사회적 능력간의 관계)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between children's gender role attitude measured by component model and social competency. Subjects were 232 elementary school children: 113 4th graders and 119 6th graders. The main results were as follows. First there were significant differences in mean scores of gender role attitude with age and sex variable. And among three dimensions of component model(i.e, gender label-component links within-component links between-component links) the difference was most discriminant in gender label-component links. Second there were significant relationship between gender role attitude and social competency. Among three dimensions of gender role attitude the most predictor variable for social competency was gender label-component links. And among four dimensions of social competency the most effective criterion variable for gender role attitude was leadership. And there were significant differences in social competency score with mother's educational level and sex of children as well as gender role attitude. In conclusion children's gender role attitude influence their social competency. More flexible gender role attitude they have more improved in their social competency , especially in boys.

The Interaction Effect of Social Responsibility Activities of Consumers and Corporations on Corporate Evaluation (소비자의 기업평가에 있어서 기업과 소비자의 사회적 책임활동의 상호작용효과)

  • Business firms and consumers exist within a society, and their activities influence a society, because they are not separated from a society. Thus, consumers as well as business firms have been asked to conduct socially responsible actions (i.e., environmentally friendly production and socially friendly activities). Previous researchers have investigated on the relationship between corporate social responsibilities and business performances. For example, researchers have analyzed the effects of corporate social responsibility on consumer's corporate evaluations. The corporate social responsibility is commonly classified into the three dimensions (economic, social, and environmental responsibility). In this paper, we demonstrated that the consumer social responsibility can also be classified into the three dimensions. Previous researchers have shown that the three dimensions of corporate social responsibility influence consumer's corporate evaluation. However, they have not considered the interaction effect of the corporate social responsibility and the consumer social responsibility on consumers' corporate evaluation. Different from the past studies, this study investigated on the interaction effect of consumer social responsibility (economic, social, environmental responsibility) and corporate social responsibility (economic, social, environmental responsibility) on consumer's corporate evaluation. For the study, we collected survey data of 200 consumers and analyzed the interaction effect with ANOVAs. The result showed that the three dimensions of social responsibility to both corporate and consumers influence positively the corporate evaluation. They also showed that the interaction effect of consumer responsibility and corporate responsibility on the corporate evaluation was statistically significant. This implies that it is necessary for corporate to conduct corporate social responsibility differently depending on consumer's activity for consumer social responsibility.
