  • This study observes reporters' awareness on the use of social media and their Core Values by using the Theory of Means-End Chain and drawing conclusions from a Hierarchical Value Map (HVM). In order to analyze reporters' knowledge and awareness on the use of social media via the laddering method, in-depth interviews of 46 reporters were conducted. The study showed that reporters consider sense of kinship, well-balanced understanding, and the desire for knowledge to be important Core Values. The results revealed that the convenience in interpersonal communication, development of intimacy in relationships, entertainment and affection, curiosity, the reduction in the cost of the acquisition of information, understanding of trends in issues, a peek into new information and the maintenance of interests, psychological dependability, and quick updates on information items are considered important Consequences of social media. In the Attributes level, the ability to write postings and links on Facebook and readability and 'follow' and 'mention' features on Twitter were confirmed to be important items in social media. The findings infer that reporters that make use of social media use Twitter and Facebook to build a sense of kinship with other users and gain well-balanced understanding by accessing a lot of information through social media. While this study examined the level of reporters' familiarity with the use of social media via the laddering method, the results cannot be seen as a generalization, as the interviewees were reporters from only the major news organizations.

  • The rapid spread of smart devices initiated by the launch of iPhone and the development of state-of-the-art communication technology have opened up a new chapter for today's age, accelerating a paradigm shift. It is defined as 'the smart era' that is characterized by a DNA of mobile. The meaning of the term 'smart' depends on in which field it is used and who uses it, but the term is basically based on 'human being,' namely people. Accordingly, people should take the initiative in this smart era, and what only people can do will become more important for that reason. In addition, there will be a drastic progress in today's technology, which is expected to make human life more convenient and to even make it possible to read human sentiment and emotion. Such social changes have affected education as well, and the education sector is making preparations for the introduction of 'smart education,' as there is a consensus that an absolutely new paradigm shift is mandatory. Smart education is not merely to introduce smart devices, ICT technology and SNS in education. New competent people are required in globalization age, and smart education is to attempt a new education to nurture new competent people. In this study, 4C (that were creativity, collaboration, contents and curation) were suggested as the key factors of smart education, and in which direction smart education should be led in our country was discussed.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the consumer perception of packaging using big data analysis. This study use text mining to extract meaningful words from text and semantic network analysis to analyze connectivity and propagation trends. Data were collected by dividing the 'packaging(Korean)' and 'packaging(English)'. This study visualized the word network structure of the two key words and classified them into four groups with similar meaning through CONCOR analysis. The group name was specified based on the words constituting the classified group. These groups are a major category of consumers' perception of packaging. Especially cosmetics and design have high frequency of words and high centrality. Therefore it can be expected that the packaging design is perceived as important in the cosmetics industry. This study predicts consumers' perception of packaging so it can be a basis for future research and industry development.

  • The purpose of this study is to find out whether image similarity between celebrities and brands on social network service be a determinant to predict advertising effectiveness. To this end, an advertising effect prediction model for celebrity endorsed advertising was created and its validity was verified through a machine learning method which is a big data analysis technique. Firstly, the celebrity-brand image similarity, which was used as an independent variable, was quantified by the association network theory with social big data, and secondly a multiple regression model which used data representing advertising effects as a dependent variable was repeatedly conducted to generate an advertising effect prediction model. The accuracy of the prediction model was decided by comparing the prediction results with the survey outcomes. As for a result, it was proved that the validity of the predictive modeling of advertising effects was secured since the classification accuracy of 75%, which is a criterion for judging validity, was shown. This study suggested a new methodological alternative and direction for big data-based modeling research through celebrity-brand image similarity structure based on social network theory, and effect prediction modeling by machine learning.

  • Unlike the first generation of Korean Wave (Hallyu 1.0), which mainly refers to the exports of Korean TV dramas via broadcasting systems, the New Korean Wave (Hallyu 2.0) era has been brought by K-pop (Korean popular music) via the rapid growth of social media. The purpose of this study is to understand the impact of this significant shift in media on global fans and their way of adopting Korean cultural goods from a social capital perspective, in order to draw some implications for the current Korean content industries. Most global fans of K-pop are young and use social media to access digital content and share their opinions spontaneously. SNS providers such as YouTube and Facebook not only act as information providers to usher the fans to online music retailers; but also function as links between these fans and cultural producers by turning bonding social capital into bridging social capital. Telecommunication and advertising companies participate in this market as a third party by providing funds for supporting digital circulation and distribution. In this multi-sided market with the interdependent agents, it is extremely important to secure a platform that leads the evolution of its business ecology. Without owning the platform, there is also a very little chance to produce linking social capital as a means to maximize the impact of New Korean Wave.

Different from the F-shaped pattern of the typical Web pages, users' eye movements on the Facebook have shown a rough H-shape. Even though a large number of users have shown F-shaped pattern on the ordinary Web pages in order to skip the contents of a Web, subjects' eye-movement pattern on the Facebook has H -shaped pattern due to the unique User Interface (UI) of the Facebook. With the right side and vertical arrangement of ads on the Facebook, users skip the page with having a large H-shaped pattern. In addition, this study set four AOIs(Area of Interest) that are advertising sections comprised on the Facebook Web page and measured fixation length within the AOIs then surveyed subjects' attitudes about the exposed ads. Through the experiment and survey, this study offers the optimum advertising position that can attract Facebook users' attention. • This study examined the importance of social capital in facilitating older adults' learning and adaptation of information technology as well as alleviating depressive symptoms. At two senior community centers in South Korea, 144 adults aged 60 and older were recruited to participate in 12 week-long technology classes to learn computers, smart phone, and internet skills. At the baseline interviews were conducted to assess their health status, depression, and online social relationships. Online and offline social capital (bonding vs. bridging) was assessed (Williams, 2006). Four-step Hierarchical Linear Regression analysis was conducted to examine the effects of online social relationship on depression. Findings suggested that depressive symptoms were associated with being widowed, being unemployed, and perceiving poor health status. Adding social capital variables in the final step, older adults who perceived less stressors, greater level of subjective health and high online bonding capitals had less depressive symptoms. Only online social bonding was significant in alleviating depression. This final model explained 48% of the variance. Computer/Internet training for older adults need to consider the significant role bonding social capital can play. The findings of this pilot study provided a preliminary base of knowledge about acceptable community-based interventions for older adults.
