Objectives: The development of internet programs for smoking cessation was motivated to quit smoking in the large group of smokers. This personalized program consisted of tailored message to consider the smokers characteristics, and contain the informations on the outcomes of smoking cessation and the skills to be used in the quit attempts. The purpose of this study was to develop the internet management program and information push-delivery system for smoking cessation to encourage the personal intention to quit smoking. Methods: We conducted in 3 steps as developing push service to encourage intention of smoking cessation, analyzing problems of smoking cessation program through the pilot test and suggesting improvements by implication stages. Results: This program is delivered for 30 days. if the participants do not fail to quit smoking. The contents consisted of 13 stages which were divided on starting period. practical period, maintenance period and success period. And push service afforded the tailored message to participants using their e-mail. According to the evaluation of pilot test, the problems of internet information push-delivery service for smoking cessation were the over-tasks per visiting time, recording style of participants, difficulty of terms and sentences, lack of visual effects, absence of follow-up module and unsuitable link with main homepage. Improvements were divided on 3 stages by implication period. The first stage included the immediate improvements as improving link with homepage, modifying menu of smoking information and upload file of notice part. The second stage included the short term improvements as alleviating condition of withdrawal, coordinating start stage of retrial, modifying errors of information push-delivery service and addition of educational materials. The third stage included the long term improvements as development of follow-up module, cost-effectiveness evaluation, reducing contents quantity, introduction of checking style, compensation of graphics effect and review for SMS utilization. Conclusions: This program contribute to improving smoking cessation rate. Therefore this program should be tested in a community to evaluate the effectiveness. To promote the effectiveness, this program should be developed the contents and the strategies for various targets, and established the follow-up system for ex-smokers.
(A series of cigarettes made from) RTL containing different leveles of added sugars (2.0. 5.0 and 8.0%) and acids(0.4, 0.8 and 1.2%) have been examined. Compared to the control cigarette there was reduced in the delivery of tar and nicotine in smoke on 5.0% addition of glucose there was a signification reduced the delivery of nicotine the addition of glucose or fructose decreased the delivery of nicotine tar and co. However, tar in smoke was an increased in the delivery of tar and nicotine was observed, when sucrose and lactose were the added sugars. The smoking taste by the addition of glucose and fructose on R.T.L. was found to be milder than by the others sugars. Tar and nicotine deliveries showed a decreasing trend with the addition of organic acid and tartaric acid among the organic acid described above had greater effect than the others acids 1.2% addition of tartaric acid gave some 11-31% reduction in tar and nicotine delivery and a fall of smoke pH from 4.49 was found. Smoking taste by the addition of lactic acid and tartaric acid had milder than the others and heat treatment for 10 minutes at 13$0^{\circ}C$ gave also better on smoking: taste. The addition of mixture of sugars and organic acid (glucose 5% + lactic acid 0.6% + tartaric acid 0.6%) and then the successive heat treatment for 10 minutes at 13$0^{\circ}C$ improved greatly the Quality of R.T.L. and nicotine were reduced to 11-28% and pH was changed from 5.40 to 3.89.
E-cigarettes were considered safe at the early stage of market entry because they were thought not to contain harmful ingredients such as nicotine and because the smoke emitted was vapor. For this reason, the use of e-cigarettes as a safer alternative to tobacco cigarettes or as a smoking cessation aid has emerged. However, the study results on the effectiveness of e-cigarettes for smoking cessation are mixed. In response to the increased use of e-cigarettes, foreign countries have implemented various regulations, such as utilizing e-cigarettes for smoking cessation with a prescription in Australia; however, South Korea is still standing firm on recommending not to use e-cigarettes at all. Therefore, the effectiveness of e-cigarettes for smoking cessation and the regulatory trends of e-cigarette use overseas will be reviewed to discuss the future direction in South Korea needs to take.
Six kinds of sugars (Maltose, Sucrose, Glucose, Fructose, Mannose and Lactose) and four kinds of organic acids (Malic, Tartaric, Lactic and Citric) were added by 2-10% for the former and 0.2-1.8% for the later in quantitatively to the inferior quality of Flue-cured leaf tobaccos, and treated at 135$^{\circ}C$ for 10 minutes to examine the effect on deliveries of tar and nicotine in smoke, variation of smoke pH and smoking taste. The results obtained are as follows. Tar and nicotine deliveries in smoke of tobacco show a great reduction with 5-6% addition of sugars. Reduction of nicotine delivery was to be 19% with addition of Glucose. Tar in smoke was, however, increased by 5-8% with 4% addition of Sucrose or Lactose. On the other hand, 4% addition of Glucose and Fructose gave 1 % reduction of tar delivery, but the reduction rate became to be small with increase of adding quantity. The smoking taste by the addition of Glucose and Fructose tobacco was found to be milder than by the other sugars. Tar and nicotine deliveries show a decreasing trend with the addition of organic acid, and Tartaric acid, among the organic acids described above, had greater effect than the other acids. 1% addition of Tartaric acid gaves 10-11% reduction in tar and nicotine delivery, and a fall of smoke pH, from 6.40 to 6.05, was found. Smoking taste by the addition of Lactic and Tartaric acid had milder than the others. And heat treatment for 10 minutes at $135^{\circ}C$ gave also better on smoking taste. The addition of mixture of sugars and organic acids, (Glucose 4%+Lactic acid 0.8% + Tartaric acid 0.2%) and then the successive heat treatment for 10 minutes at $135^{\circ}C$ improved greatly the quality of Fluecured leaf tobacco, and nicotine were reduced to 16-29%, and pH was changed from 6.46 to 6.14.
Objectives : This study was conducted to explore the relating factors with the delivery of low-birth-weight infants in Pyungtaek city. Methods : A questionnaire survey was obtained from 51 mothers with low-birth-weight babies and 90 mothers with full-term normal babies from April to October in 2001. Questionnaire consisted of demographic characteristics, dietary habits including alcohol. drugging, and smoking, past and present disease, prenatal risk factors and prenatal check-up, and complications related to labor and delivery. Results : 1. In the low-birth-weight infants group, father's education level and mother's height were significantly lower, and proportion of old age mothers was significantly higher than those of the normal infant group. 2. Mothers with low-birth-weight infants experienced more premature rupture of membrane, placenta previa, ecclampsia, and twin pregnancy than mothers with normal infants. Gestational period of mothers with low-birth-weight infants was significantly shorter than that of mothers with normal infants. 3. No differences were found in eating habit, alcohol and drug ingestion, smoking, exposing to dangerous materials in two groups, but both groups were highly exposed to indirect smoking, although mothers rarely smoke. Conclusion : The findings of this study indicate that high risk group such as less educated, or older mothers need more prenatal health assessment and support from public health services. Addition to determine the risk factors related to the delivery of low-birth-weight infants, public health nurses pay more attention and develop efficient management system for vulnerable women and infants.
Purpose: Although heated tobacco product (HTP) use among adolescents is an emerging public health problem, little is known about the frequency and quantity of HTP use. Thus, we investigated the associations between the frequency and quantity of HTP use and smoking characteristics (i.e., combustible cigarette [CC] and electronic cigarette [EC] use, and attempts to quit smoking) among CC-smoking adolescents. Methods: We analyzed nationally representative data from 2,470 Korean adolescents who were current CC smokers. To investigate our aim, we conducted multinomial logistic and logistic regression analyses. Results: We found that daily and heavier CC users had greater likelihoods of more frequent and heavier HTP use. In addition, dual users of CCs and ECs were more likely to use HTPs more frequently and heavily than CC users who did not use ECs. Moreover, daily EC users had the highest risk of frequent and heavy HTP use. The frequency and quantity of HTP use were not associated with attempts to quit smoking. Compared to CC-only use, dual use of CCs and HTPs was not associated with quitting attempts, and triple use of CCs, ECs, and HTPs was associated with a lower likelihood of quitting attempts. Conclusion: HTP use was less likely to displace CC use and promote attempts to quit smoking. Thus, strict regulations are required to prevent the promotion of HTPs as a substitute for CCs or as a means of quitting smoking. Additionally, health professionals should consider preventive interventions for HTP, as well as CC and EC use among adolescents.
Purpose: This study was conducted to 1) find out the characteristic of smoke related characteristics of nurses. 2) find out the frequency of Smoking cessation intervention delivered by nurses. 3) compare the differences in mean scores of smoking cessation interventions by general characteristics. Method: The survey questionnaire was mailed out to nurses who were working at the randomly selected hospitals throughout the country from November 28, 2003 to February 15, 2004. Result: $0.6\%$ of nurses were current smokers $40.7\%$ of nurses have attended smoking cessation education. Nurses who were older, had masters degree, had oncology experience, higher position, participated in smoking cessation education, and had smoking related disease among family members were variables related to higher frequencies in delivering tobacco interventions. Conclusion: Although nurses are in an important position in delivering tobacco interventions and provide resources, their participation in consistent delivery of an intervention is less than desirable. To help nurses to participate in the assessment of tobacco use and interventions for cessation, the development of educational program is necessary.
Purpose: We aimed to identify associations between the frequency of electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) use and smoking-related characteristics among adolescent smokers. Methods: We used data from the 14th Korea Youth Risk Behavior Survey. The participants were 3,722 smokers who had smoked cigarettes on at least one day during the past 30 days. The frequency of e-cigarette use was defined as the number of days that participants used e-cigarettes during the past 30 days, and was divided into four categories: 0, 1~2, 3~9, and ${\geq}10$ days. We used the $x^2$ test and multinomial logistic regression to examine the associations between the frequency of e-cigarette use and smoking-related characteristics. Results: Those who attempted to quit smoking, had used a heated tobacco product (HTP) at least once, or initiated e-cigarette use before middle school were more likely to use e-cigarettes for 3~9 days in the past 30 days. More frequent e-cigarette use (${\geq}10$ days) was associated with a higher frequency and greater amount of cigarette use, lifetime HTP use, and earlier initiation of e-cigarette use. Conclusion: Smoking-related characteristics differed by the frequency of e-cigarette use. Therefore, intervention programs targeting adolescent smokers should consider differences in smoking-related characteristics based on the frequency of e-cigarette use.

Comprehensive review of the literature was conducted to determine 1) selected risk factors and its impact that affect pregnancy outcome such as smoking, alcohol consumption, and substance abuse 2) these factors can facilitate future strategies for health promotion and prevention for both pregnant women and fetus. Review of literature were extracted from searching MEDLINE(1966 - Oct. 2000). CINAHL (1982 - Oct. 2000) and the domestic literature. The following factors were identified: 1. The effects of risk behaviors on pregnancy. ${\cdot}$Maternal smoking was associated with the occurrence of premature or LBW delivery, fetal growth retardation, extremities defects, heart defects and sudden infant death syndrome. ${\cdot}$Maternal alcohol consumption was associated with spontaneous abortion, premature or LBW delivery, morphologic/neurologic problems, especially fetal alcohol syndrome. ${\cdot}$Heroin was associated with withdrawal after birth in which were born to heroine addicts for gestational age and lung maturation in animal studies. ${\cdot}$Cocaine was associated with spontaneous abortion, abruptio placenta and a poor response to environmental stimuli. ${\cdot}$So far, the effects of caffeine on pregnancy was controversial, but severe caffeine consumption was associated with premature or LBW delivery, spontaneous abortion, still birth and dystocia. 2. Intervention methods and its effects identified were as follows ${\cdot}$Conducted intervention for smoking, alcohol and drug consumption were single or combined. ${\cdot}$Intervention methods were counseling, phone contact, mailing, use of educational videotape, booklet, support person and alternatives such as nicotine patch. ${\cdot}$The interventions increased the rates of smoking cessation during pregnancy and awareness of the risk of drug consumption, and decreased amount of alcohol consumption. ${\cdot}$The intervention outcome found positive effect on birth weight and length. 3. Our recommendations were as follows ${\cdot}$The personal and social cognition should be enhanced through education and the mass media. ${\cdot}$It's necessary to educate and give information of preconceptional care, planned pregnancy and early prenatal care for optimal pregnancy outcome. ${\cdot}$It's necessary to develop comprehensive assessment tool which is reliable and valid on smoking, alcohol consumption and substance abuse to identify supportive or interventional program.
The purpose of this study was to examine factors relating intention of smoking cessation intervention among nursing students. The participants were 214 nursing students among two universities in B city and Y city. A self-administered questionnaire was used to collect data. Data were analyzed with t-test, Pearson's correlation and multiple regression by using SPSS 23.0 program. The significant factors relating intention of smoking cessation intervention were self-efficacy of smoking cessation intervention (${\beta}=.634$ p<.001), attitude of smoking cessation intervention (${\beta}=.191$, p=.002), and beliefs of health benefits of smoking cessation (${\beta}=.132$, p=.032). And these factors explained 65.2% of the variance in nursing students' intention to implement smoking cessation intervention. In conclusion, self-efficacy of smoking cessation intervention, attitude of smoking cessation intervention and beliefs of health benefits of smoking cessation had a significant positive influence on the intention to delivery smoking cessation intervention among nursing students. These finding can be used to develop evidence-based smoking cessation intervention training program for nursing students.
