  • For realizing an ubiquitous home network(uHome-net), various sensors should be able to be connected to an integrated wire/wireless sensor network. This paper describes an application case of applying LonWorks technology being widely used in control network to wire/wireless sensor network in uHome-net and the design and application of LonRF device that consists of a neuron chip including LonTalk protocol, a 433.92MHz RF transceiver, a sensor, and application programs. As an application example of the LonRF device, the LonRF smart badge that can measure the 3D location of objects in indoor environment and interwork with the uHome-net was developed. LonRF device based home network services were realized on the uHome-net testbed such as indoor positioning service, remote surveillance service and remote metering service were realized. This research shows that LonWorks technology based sensor network could be applicable to the control network in an ubiquitous home network and the LonRF device can be used as a wireless node in various sensor networks.

  • Low power RF devices, such as RFID and Zigbee, are important for ubiquitous sensing. These devices, however, are powered by portable energy sources, such as batteries, which limits their use. To mitigate this problem, this study developed RF energy harvesting with W-CDMA for a low power RF device. Diodes are required with a low turn on voltage because the diode threshold is larger than the received peak voltage of the rectifying antenna (rectenna). Therefore, a Schottky diode HSMS-286 was used. A prototype of RF energy harvesting device showed the maximum gain of 5.8dBi for the W-CDMA signal. The 16 patch antennas were manufactured with a 10 dielectric constant PTFT board. In low power RF devices, the transmitter requires a step-up voltage of 2.5~5V with up to 35 mA. To meet this requirement, the Texas Instruments TPS61220 was used as a low input voltage step-up converter. From the evaluated result, the achievable incident power of the rectenna at 926mV to operate Zigbee can be obtained within a distance of 12m.

  • This study investigates the importance of flood-influencing factors on the accuracy of flood risk mapping using the integration of remote sensing-based and machine learning techniques. Here, the Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) and Random Forest (RF) algorithms integrated with GIS-based techniques were considered to develop and generate flood risk maps. For the study area of NAPA County in the United States, rainfall data from the 12 stations, Sentinel-1 SAR, and Sentinel-2 optical images were applied to extract 13 flood-influencing factors including altitude, aspect, slope, topographic wetness index, normalized difference vegetation index, stream power index, sediment transport index, land use/land cover, terrain roughness index, distance from the river, soil, rainfall, and geology. These 13 raster maps were used as input data for the XGBoost and RF algorithms for modeling flood-prone areas using ArcGIS, Python, and R. As results, it indicates that XGBoost showed better performance than RF in modeling flood-prone areas with an ROC of 97.45%, Kappa of 93.65%, and accuracy score of 96.83% compared to RF's 82.21%, 70.54%, and 88%, respectively. In conclusion, XGBoost is more efficient than RF for flood risk mapping and can be potentially utilized for flood mitigation strategies. It should be noted that all flood influencing factors had a positive effect, but altitude, slope, and rainfall were the most influential features in modeling flood risk maps using XGBoost.

  • This study was conducted to develop a precision measurement method of water content in soil (find sand and silty sand) using dual RF impedance changes. The electrically stable perpendicular plate capacitive sensor was fabricated and utilized to sense the water content in soil. Crystal oscillators of 5 and 20 MHz and related circuits were designed to detect the capacitance changes of a perpendicular plate capacitive sensor with soil samples at various volumetric water contents. A multiple regression model for volumetric water content having dual oscillation frequency changes at 5 and 20 MHz as independent variables resulted in coefficient of determination of 0.963 and standard error calibration of 0.030 cm$^3$/cm$^3$ for calibration and coefficient of determination of 0.966, standard error of prediction of 0.027 cm$^3$/cm$^3$ and bias of 0.001 cm$^3$/cm$^3$ for prediction.

  • This paper proposes two types of subharmonic RF receiver front-end (called LMV) where, in a single stage, quadrature voltage-controlled oscillator (QVCO) is stacked on top of a low noise amplifier. Since the QVCO itself plays the role of the single-balanced subharmonic mixer with the dc current reuse technique by stacking, the proposed topology can remove the RF mixer component in the RF front-end and thus reduce the chip size and the power consumption. Another advantage of the proposed topologies is that many challenges of the direct conversion receiver can be easily evaded with the subharmonic mixing in the QVCO itself. The intermediate frequency signal can be directly extracted at the center taps of the two inductors of the QVCO. Using a 65 nm complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) technology, the proposed subharmonic RF front-ends are designed. Oscillating at around 2.4 GHz band, the proposed subharmonic LMVs are compared in terms of phase noise, voltage conversion gain and double sideband noise figure. The subharmonic LMVs consume about 330 ㎼ dc power from a 1-V supply.

  • Reflective and solar LED road studs are being used as a way of securing visibility for road environments. Road markers have various advantages and disadvantages in terms of versatility, efficiency, simplicity and visibility as individual products of reflective type and solar LED. However, in addition to the above, it is possible to prevent secondary accident after accident, It has a common drawback that it is difficult to have. In this paper, we propose a road stud system incorporating a wireless control function using RF - based communication with existing solar LED road studs and a system for controlling them. The proposed system is called the smart road stud system and it can control the equipment through the central control unit and the relay unit connected to the central control room by incorporating the RF communication function in the existing solar LED road stud. In addition, since it is possible to control the lighting method, color, etc. according to the road condition, it is possible to provide the driver with the state of the road to perform the function for preventing the second accident after the accident. It also adds features that minimize the ongoing power consumption of LED and RF communications. In order to verify the validity of the proposed system, prototypes were produced and it was confirmed that it is possible to act as a university for prevention of accident after accident by linking with other traffic system besides accident prevention function by securing existing visibility.
