  • A smart grid is an electric-power grid that employs a new information technology. This technology makes it possible to exchange real-time energy information between suppliers and consumers, finally resulting in high energy efficiency. The energy management system in smart grid provides up to date information on electricity consumption as well as dynamic electricity price to consumers of smart grid system. However, the existing energy management systems only focus on pricing system, for example, real-time electricity prices. In this paper, we try to improve the existing energy management system and propose the energy management system that mainly focuses on the efficiency of electricity consumption. In the proposed management system, PMU(Phasor Measurement Units) installed in switchboards gathers electricity data in a real time. We also propose to use data mining method, which is applied to analyzed electricity data for improving energy efficiency. Also, the proposed energy management system is designed to efficiently control the electricity between PMU and management system in case of a shortage of electricity or surplus electricity.

  • In South Korea, there have been many studies on efficient building-energy management using renewable energy facilities in single zero-energy houses or buildings. However, such management was limited due to spatial and economic problems. To realize a smart zero-energy city, studying efficient energy integration for the entire city, not just for a single house or building, is necessary. Therefore, this study was conducted in the eco-friendly energy town of Chungbuk Innovation City. Chungbuk successfully realized energy independence by converging new and renewable energy facilities for the first time in South Korea. This study analyzes energy data collected from public buildings in that town every minute for a year. We propose a smart city building-energy management model based on the results that combine various renewable energy sources with grid power. Supervised learning can determine when it is best to sell surplus electricity, or unsupervised learning can be used if there is a particular pattern or rule for energy use. However, it is more appropriate to use reinforcement learning to maximize rewards in an environment with numerous variables that change every moment. Therefore, we propose a power distribution algorithm based on reinforcement learning that considers the sales of Energy Storage System power from surplus renewable energy. Finally, we confirm through economic analysis that a 10% saving is possible from this efficiency.

  • In this paper, we propose a system architecture of the AMI to be applied in the modern agricultural sector. Agricultural electricity costs in South Korea is very inexpensive compared with other industries. It is expected to increase oil prices to rise over the medium to long term so the facilities must to be installed for farmers in terms of energy savings and energy costs. The research and development of plant factory which can replace the ills of modern agriculture is very active. The technologies of smart grid and plat factory are good paradigm of next generation agricultural sector. Good use of smart grid technologies, the traditional energy consumption industries, agriculture sector can be self-sufficiency industry. In this article the AMI architecture is developed and it will be applicable for modern farmers plant factory.

  • Problem of energy worldwide reduction had to research on the requirements of services and an important element for the energy management of public buildings and facilities. In this paper, we research the SmartGrid case studies and services requirements based on M2M service. As a result, operation of devices for energy management, network, and application services for a variety of energy-efficiency requirements for the profile was defined. In this study is possible to provide in survey of the smart grid system of M2M-based in public institutions, schools and universities, and large buildings.

  • In this paper, we proposed a smart lighting management system controls the lighting efficiently to reduce energy consumption while satisfying user's lighting requirements. The proposed system considers the available daylight intensity and indoor light source to satisfy the lighting requirements of each user according to the work environment. In addition, for user convenience, we have developed different user interfaces for lighting control including local interface, and remote interface through internet or Bluetooth for personal computer as well as smart phones. The proposed system satisfies the lighting requirements of each user according to the corresponding work environment. The proposed smart lighting management system utilizes the lighting energy efficiently, and can be considered a significant contribution towards future green buildings.

  • Due to changes in the energy environment, it's very popular to introduce the solar energy at home. More effective energy management is achieved together with an energy storage system(ESS). The electricity generated by solar can be used effectively to achieve the peak cut and price reduction. In this paper, we developed Smart Energy Profile(SEP) to make an ESS as a component of home energy management system(HEMS) cooperating with home network. First, we defined the functions equipped on the ESS and then developed a standard-based protocol to achieve compatibility between products. Our main contribution is to establish the foundation to introduce the HEMS at home.

  • With the increasing popularity of Smart Grid infrastructure, it is much easier to collect energy usage data using AMI (Advanced Measuring Instrument) from residential housing, buildings and factories. Several researches have been done to improve an energy efficiency by analyzing the collected energy usage data. However, it is not easy to store and analyze the energy data using a traditional relational database management system since the data size grows exponentially with an increasing popularity of Smart grid infrastructure. In this paper, we are proposing a Hadoop based Big data system to store and analyze energy usage data. Based on our limited experiments, Hadoop based energy data analysis is three times faster than that of a relational database management system based approach with the current system.

  • Conservation of energy and fuel is the trend in smart building design. Radio Frequency Integrated Circuit (RFIC) technology is often used in temperature sensing and signal transmission to manage indoor temperature, but it is rarely applied to the shell of the building. Heat retention and poor insulation in building shells are the largest causes of high energy consumption by indoor air conditioning. Through combining RFIC technology with temperature sensors, this study will develop smart temperature information material that can be embedded in concrete. In addition to accurately evaluating the effectiveness of shell insulation material, the already-designed Building Physiology Information System can monitor long-term temperature changes, leading to smarter building health management.

  • Smart Grid has two main objectives on both supply and demand aspects which are to distribute the renewable energy sources on supply side and to develop realtime price responses on demand side. Renewable energy does not consume fossil fuels, therefore it improves the eco-friendliness and saves the cost of power system operation at the same time. Demand response increases the flexibility of the power system by mitigating the fluctuation from renewable energies, and reduces the capacity investment cost by shedding the peak load to off-peak periods. Currently Smart Grid technologies mainly focus on energy monitoring and display services but it has been proved that enabling technologies can induce the higher demand responses through many pilot projects in USA. On this context, this paper provides a price responsive algorithm for HEMS (home energy management system) on the real time pricing environment. This paper identifies the demand response as a core function of HEMS and classifies the demand into 3 categories of fixed, transferable, and realtime responsive loads which are coordinated and operated for the utility maximization or cost minimization with the optimal usage combination of three kinds of demand.
