Recently, the interest in safety assessment of civil infrastructures is increasing in Korea. Especially, as bridge structures become large-scale, it is necessary to monitor and maintain the safety state of bridges, which requires the monitoring system that can make a long-term measurement during the service time of bridge. In this paper, advanced fiber optic sensors for long-term measurement, setup techniques of bridge monitoring system and the assessment of measured data are introduced. Attached or embedded optical fiber sensors to structural members of small and big structures including Sung San Bridge are surveyed. For the Sung San Bridge, the responses of the fiber optic sensors by 30 ton weigh truck loads with various speeds ate measured. Monitoring system is also applied to the mock-up of bridges. The monitoring capability of the advanced fiber optic sensor system was confirmed.

The presenet research attempts to examine the combustion characteristics and the structure of the flame in turbulent premixed flames and thus enhance the combustion performance that leads to the design of the effective combustion system (untilizing LNG). Following experimental investigations for several stabilized premixed flames were attempted to identify the interactive mechanism between flame structures and flow fields; Visualization by Schlieren method, measurement of flow velocity by LDV, detection of ion current by ion probe, measurement of fluctuating temperature by thermocouple having compensation circuit, average values with respect to time of fluctuating amount for flow velocity, temperature, ion current, etc., variable RMS values, PDFs, autocorrelation, crosscorrelation, spatial macroscale, power spectra, and velocity scale. Continuing the authors published studies whose flame dominated by coherent structures and the characteristics of combustion reaction for irregular three dimensional flame and stabilized flame by step were investigated with obtained experimental quantities. Results of this research are following : The most turbulent flames support the structure of a Wrinkled laminar flame or laminar flamelets. It also observed that combustion reaction is related to small tubulence microscales of the turbulent flow fields closly.
A multi-input single-output (MISO) semi-active control systems were studied by many researchers. For more improved vibration control performance, a structure requires more than one control device. In this paper, multi-input multi-output (MIMO) semi-active fuzzy controller has been proposed for vibration control of seismically excited small-scale buildings. The MIMO fuzzy controller was optimized by multi-objective genetic algorithm. For numerical simulation, five-story example building structure is used and two MR dampers are employed. For comparison purpose, a clipped-optimal control strategy based on acceleration feedback is employed for controlling MR dampers to reduce structural responses due to seismic loads. Numerical simulation results show that the MIMO fuzzy control algorithm can provide superior control performance to the clipped-optimal control algorithm.
This paper presents an extensive analysis of the short term, unsteady wind loading on a low-rise building. The building is located in a rural environment and only the specific situation of wind flow orthogonal to the long face of the structure is considered. The data is analysed using conventional analysis and less traditional methods such as conditional sampling and wavelet analysis. The nature of the flow field over the building is found to be highly unsteady and complex. Fluctuating pressures on the windward wall are shown to a large extent to be caused by the fluctuations in the upstream flow, whereas extreme pressures on the roof are as a result of high intensity small scale flow structures. On the roof of the building a significant amount of energy is shown to exist at frequencies above 1 Hz.
The structural responses of underground structures are examined in probability by using the elasto-plastic stochastic finite element method in which the spatial distributions of material properties are assumed to be stochastic fields. In addition, the adaptive importance sampling method using the response surface technique is used to improve simulation efficiency. The method is found to provide appropriate information although the nonlinear Limit State involves a large number of basic random variables and the failure probability is small. The probability of plastic local failures around an excavated area is effectively evaluated and the reliability for the limit displacement of the ground is investigated. It is demonstrated that the adaptive importance sampling method can be very efficiently used to evaluate the reliability of a large scale stochastic finite element model, such as the underground structures located in the multi-layered ground.

The present study analyzed free vibration of the three-layered micro annular/circular plate which its core and face sheets are made of saturated porous materials and FG-CNTRCs, respectively. The structure is subjected to magneto-electric fields and magneto-electro-mechanical pre loads. Mechanical properties of the porous core and also FG-CNTRC face sheets are varied through the thickness direction. Using dynamic Hamilton's principle, the motion equations based on MCS and FSD theories are derived and solved via GDQ as an efficient numerical method. Effect of different parameters such as pores distributions, porosity coefficient, pores compressibility, CNTs distribution, elastic foundation, multi-physical pre loads, small scale parameter and aspect ratio of the plate are investigated. The findings of this study can be useful for designing smart structures such as sensor and actuator.

This paper presents a direct numerical simulation of turbulent flows over a bump in an open channel to examine the turbulence characteristics near divergent waves emanating from the bump and to investigate the interaction of the turbulences with the divergent waves. To verify the reliability of the simulations, the mean velocity profile and root-mean-square of velocity fluctuations are compared with previous data. The anisotropic invariant maps show that the ratio of the streamwise to spanwise velocity fluctuations plays an important role in characterizing the anisotropic nature of the separated shear layer behind the bump in the vicinity of the free surface. The vortex identification discloses a large-scale streamwise vortical structure from the mean velocity field and a cluster of small coherent structures from the instantaneous velocity field, which are responsible for the anisotropic characteristics of the turbulence beneath the free surface.

This article investigates the statically analysis regarding the thermal buckling behavior of a nonuniform small-scale nanobeam made of functionally graded material based on classic beam theories along with the nonlocal Eringen elasticity. The material distribution of functionally graded structures is composed of temperature-dependent ceramic and metal phases in axial and thickness directions, called two-dimensional functionally graded (2D-FG). The partial differential (PD) formulations and end conditions are extracted by using to the conservation energy method. The porosity voids are assumed in the nonuniform functionally graded (FG) structure. The thermal loads are in the axial direction of the beam. The extracted nonlocal PD equations are also solved by employing generalized differential quadrature method (GDQM). Last but not least, the information acquired is used to produce miniature sensors, providing a unique perspective on the growth of nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS).
After underground excavation being introduced in dometic, many technologies have been storing up. One of them, measurement, has been recognized as an important item under excavation construction. But, unlike a large-scale construction, it was not been treated importantly at the general small-scale structures with poor ordering and original design was unchanged under construction was normal if the problem didn't occur on monitoring. In this paper, the site which safe and economical management as well as shortening construction period was made effectively using measurement result was introduced. Also, the site which was completed safely with analyzing measurement and reinforcement when unusual symptom happened was introduced. Using measurement result effectively will be able to obtain the safety and prevent unnecessary economical loss.

In this paper, we investigate the impacts of network topology on the performance of a distributed estimation algorithm, namely combine-then-adaptive (CTA) diffusion LMS, based on the data with or without the assumptions of temporal and spatial independence with noisy links. The study covers different network models, including the regular, small-world, random and scale-free whose the performance is analyzed according to the mean stability, mean-square errors, communication cost (link density) and robustness. Simulation results show that the noisy links do not cause divergence in the networks. Also, among the networks, the scale free network (heterogeneous) has the best performance in the steady state of the mean square deviation (MSD) while the regular is the worst case. The robustness of the networks against the issues like node failure and noisier node conditions is discussed as well as providing some guidelines on the design of a network in real condition such that the qualities of estimations are optimized.
