  • A giant prostatic urethral calculus has not been previously reported in dogs and should be distinguished from prostatic calculus. A 7-year-old castrated male Maltese dog with a 2-month history of relapsing hematuria and urinary incontinence with slowly progressing paraphimosis was referred. On abdominal radiography and ultrasonography, there was a giant calculus in the region of prostate or urethra, one left ureteral calculus, one urinary bladder calculus, and two penile urethral calculi. On computed tomography for evaluating the accurate location and planning the surgical approach, the giant calculus was located at the prostatic urethra. The calculi in urinary bladder, prostatic and penile urethra were surgically removed. These calculi were mixed-type of calcium oxalate monohydrate, struvite and calcium phosphate carbonate. On the basis of the urolith analysis and urine bacterial culture results, antibiotics and prescription diet were adjusted. At the 3-month follow-up, there were no clinical sings but paraphimosis was still remained, and ultrasonography revealed newly-formed, small urethral calculi at the prostatic urethra. This is the first report to describe the case of a canine giant prostatic urethral calculus and its clinical signs, diagnostic imaging findings, treatment, and outcome. CT may be useful to assess the accurate location and surgical approach for such calculi.

  • A 7-year-old, male Maltese dog with a body weight of 2.8 kg was presented with a history of hind limbs ataxia that progressed to tetraparesis over a one-month period. Based on physical and neurological examinations, tetraparesis with concomitant UMN signs, kyphosis and severe neck pain were identified. On MRI scan, we tentatively diagnosed this patient as a primary intramedullary spinal cord tumor. Therapy with lomustine plus hydroxyurea and prednisolone was initiated and the clinical signs rapidly improved. The patient was regularly checked by MRI scan and the range of the mass was gradually reduced to complete remission for 11 months. About 19 months after treatment, the patient showed anemia and hematochezia which suspected as adverse effects of chemotherapy. The condition was getting worse over 2 months and the patient suddenly expired 657 days after initial presentation. On histopathological examination, the spinal cord sample was identified as a neuronal atrophy without evidence of tumor cell.

  • The study aimed at determining the feasibility of three portal totally Laparoscopic cryptorchidectomy in small breed dogs. Four right sided and one left sided abdomen retained testicles in five dogs weighing 2.2~8.7 kg were retrieved successfully. Pampiniform plexus and vas deference were ligated and transected with Hem-o-lock/monopolar electrocauterization (1/5), or ultrasonic scalpel (4/5) and the latter provided more easy, quick and safe hemostasis and transection. The resected testis was easily removed through a insertion site. Mean surgical time was $19.9{\pm}15.2$ minutes and when the abdominal cavity was explored again, there were no major complications. The patient recovered favorably without unwilling events. This is the case report of laparoscopic cryptorchidectomies in small breed dogs weigh less than 10 kg. Laparoscopic cryptorchidectomy could be considered as an alternative in small animal surgery.

  • A two-year-old intact male Miniature Schnauzer was presented with signs of anorexia and abdominal pain with six-week duration. An exploratory ventral midline laparotomy was performed for a confirmative diagnostic and therapeutic purpose, and the presence of a string gastrointestinal linear foreign body was observed originating in the stomach, extending to the ileum. In the small intestine, the linear foreign body was located in the serosal layer. A partial enterotomy was performed on the mesenteric border of the intestine and the string was removed. After the surgical correction, the dog recovered completely from the clinical signs of anorexia and abdominal pain.

  • A 6-year-old female, shih-tzu was presented in the February with bilateral, symmetrical hair loss and hyperpigmentation on caudal dorsolumbar region. Skin test and blood examination found no remarkable finding. Histopathological examination of biopsies from the alopecic lesions revealed follicular atrophy, infundibular hyperkeratosis and some follicles were twisted truncated and dilated. The diagnosis of recurrent flank alopecia was based on clinical signs and supportive histopathology. Treatment with oral melatonin was started at 3 mg twice daily for 80 days, and by this time complete hair regrowth was observed. The following year in the September, a small non-inflammatory alopecia developed in the same site. The dog was given oral melatonin at 3 mg twice daily for 4 weeks, hair had completely regrown.

  • A 14-year-old, 3.9 kg, castrated male Maltese presented with an intermittent cough. A solitary mass ($1.6{\times}2{\times}1.8cm$) was located in right middle lung lobe on CT examination and thoracoscopic right middle lung lobectomy was performed without lung separation. The patient recovered uneventfully and was discharged at POD3. With a histopathologic diagnosis of pulmonary bronchoalveolar carcinoma, Re-evaluation via CT scanning with contrast on POD 50 and 255 revealed no evidence of residual, metastatic or recurrent lesions. The patient has been doing well since surgery during a 9-month follow-up period.

  • An 11-year-old male Beagle, weighing 10.5 kg, was presented with sudden bradyarrhthmia and severe hypotension after incidental ingestion of diltiazem. The dog was treated with intravenous(IV) isotonic crystalloid solution, atropine, calcium gluconate, dobutamine, glucagon and gastric lavage under the aid of temporary transcutaneous cardiac pacing. With the short-term use of transcutaneous cardiac pacing and medical treatment, the heart rhythm and the condition of the patient were stabilized.

  • This study was performed for the purpose of investigating the possibility of epithelization on the defect of digestive tract after covering it with serosal wall of the cecum in the dog. The results obtained were as fallows: 1. Each defect of the digestive tract revealed almost complete formation of the mucous membrane and the muscle. Especially it was most fast in the jejunum. 2. Fistula formation was not found in all the experimental cases. The defects of small intestine and large intestine near the cecum were healed more fastly than the other portion. 3. The stomach and the duodenum appeared intestinal adhetion more frequently than the jejunum and the colon. Therefore, it is considered that covering with serosal wall of the cecum in the lower intestine is far better than in the upper intestine.

  • A 9-year-old male Yorkshire terrior with recurrent chronic otitis externa and otitis interna was referred to the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital of Seoul National University. Radiographic findings indicated mineralization around the right ear canal. A tan nodular mats, 1 cm in diameter. was noted near the tympanum after total ear canal ablation. Cytologically. the imprint smear of the cut surface of the mass produced clusters of cells with abundant and weakly basophilic cytoplasm, one small round nucleus and one or two nucleoli, mixed with both degenerate and non degenerate neutrophils. The location of the nuclei was eccentric, and some cells contained somewhat coarse black granules in their cytoplasms, on which the mass was diagnoted as ceruminous gland adenoma or hyperplasia associated with inflammation. Histopathologic examination of the tumor was compatible with a diagnosit of ceruminous gland adenoma. The patient is responding well to sugery and antimicrobial treatment.
