Paper sludges collected from three different paper mills were physico-chemically analyzed in order to use them as raw materials for making bed soils and seedling pots. The sludge from a fine paper mill contained lots of inorganic pigment particles used for coating, as those from a newsprint mill and a tissue mill had not. It was clearly through XRD analysis confirmed that all sludges included calcium carbonate. The paper sludge from the tissue mill contained the greatest amount of particles, which would contribute to water absorption and nutrient storage. The sludge from the fine paper mill had the highest density due to many inorganic elements. While the ash content and the total nitrogen content were the highest in the sludge from the fine paper mill, the C/N ratio was the lowest in the fine paper mill sludge. All sludges seemed to have insufficient contents of potassium. The sludges from the newsprint mill and the tissue mill showed more silicon contents than that from the fine paper mill. It was concluded that the sludge from the fine paper mill would be able to be the most efficient raw materials for making bed soils and seedling pots and the other two sludges would be more efficient for intensive culture for crops such as rice and grain with additional supplement of nitrogen and other nutrients.

In order to supplement insufficient nutrients of paper sludges, additional materials such as saw dust and rice husk were added during preparation of bed soils. Rice husk was more finely ground, compared to saw dust. The fine particles of the rice husk prevented their flow in a barrel of the expander. The mixed additives with paper sludges could be used to control the quantity of required nutrients for raising plants. That is, except for potassium and manganese, most of nutrients were decreased with adding the additives to paper sludge. The acidity of the paper sludges mixed with the saw dust or the rice husk was a little decreased with the increased amount of the additives. Differently from the bulk density of the paper sludges, the moisture content and the water absorption rate of the paper sludges were incremented with increasing the additives.
Sludges from the wastewater of hanji production were analysed to see that sludges from the bleaching process, the bleach washing process, and the paper preparation process were fibrous, while sludges from the process cooking with NaOH and the process of final chemical and microbiological treatment were non-fibrous. Sludge solution from the bleaching process had the most amount of solid matters. Sludges from the bleaching process, the bleach washing process, and the final chemical and microbiological treatment process contained about 80-90 %(w/w) moisture. Owing to hypochlorite ion, pH of sludge from the bleaching process was higher than any other sludge samples. The inorganic components of sludges were determined by ICP-AES. The major inorganic component of sludge from the process cooking with NaOH was Na, while the sludge from the bleaching process had Na and Ca, major components in the final chemical and microbiological treatment process were Ca and Al. Trace amount of Mg, Fe, K, P, Mn and Ti were observed in sludges. Sludge from the bleaching process had ashes more than any other sludges. Shape of sludges observed by SEM was appeared to fibrous or crystalline, and the breadth of fibrous sludge was $5{\sim}50{\mu}m$. The sludge from the bleaching process had the most amount of matters soluble by cold and hot water and by alcohol-benzene.
The sewage sludges and livestock manures, respectively, were composted with sawdust used for control moisture in the static piles system composter. The variations of temperature, pH, moisture, C/N ratio, inorganic content, forms of organic materials and nitrogen, and contents of heavy metals were investigated. The results were summarized as follows ;
The temperature for composting the sewage sludges reached the highest temperature of 52$^{\circ}C$, after 3 days and lasted for 7 days, and then went down 3$0^{\circ}C$ after 52 days. In the case of composting livestock manures, the temperature reached to 63$^{\circ}C$ after 10 days, that lasted for 10 days, and then went down gradually. After upsetting the sewage sludges and livestock manures for composting were decreased to 30% and 36%, respectively. The contents of inorganic matters and heavy metals were changed by the characteristics of raw materials but increased gradually during composting process. The total contents of organic materials in the sewage sludges and livestock manures for composting were decreased to 7% and 9%, respectively. The contents of ether extracts, resins, hemicellulose and cellulose were decreased but those of water soluble polysaccharides and lignins were not changed. The total contents of nitrogen in sewage sludges and livestock manures were decreased to 43% and 34%, respectively.
Sludge production from water treatment plants is increasing each year because water resources deterioration is proceeding and water supply facilities are growing due to water demand increase. Water treatment plant sludges can be modified to soil cover in sanitary landfilling site through the lime treatment and other alternatives. The compression strength of $1.0kg/cm^2$ is necessary for the dozer operation on soft son cover material at municipal landfilling site. Modified sludge was experimentally produced in this study with lime, bentonite, loess, and activated loess dosing. X-ray diffraction patterns of the limed water treatment plant sludge confirmed the presence of calcium carbonate and ettringite. Unconfined compression strength properties of modified sludges showed material property improvement applicable for soil cover alternatives. When adding 20-30% activated loess to water treatment plant sludges. the modified sludges could reach the compression strength for cover soil after 7 days solidification reaction, but decrease of compression strength was intentioned in 28 days reaction period. Solidification effect of the modified sludge with activated loess was observed through the scanning electron microscope.
This study was carried out to find out the elution characteristics of 4 kinds of sludges and a dust by the variation of pH. Four kinds of sludges were obtained from the Industrial wastes, and the dust, from the iron-and-steel waste. These samples were analyzed by "Official Method for Waste", and the results were summarized as follows. 1. The amounts of heavy metals The concentrations of Cu were 1,940
A new and reusable energy source is water-treatment sludges. There is a significant need for understanding the characteristics of sludge combustion related to improving efficiency and ensuring the safety of this new energy source. Because sludges are composed of solids and gas mixture, the combustion of the mixture may become quite complex. Not only decomposition of conventional organic elements but also dust explosion may be important during the process of converting sludges into a new and safe form of energy. Sludge combustion mainly involves hydrogen, methane, hydro carbons, carbon, and organic particles. Dust explosion during the gasification stage may depend on the surrounding temperature and the composition of gases. The uncertainty in the explosive behavior of energetic source is noted in this work. We study the explosion characteristics of sludge combustion while the reusability of sewage sludges as a new form of energy is also investigated.

Zn, Cu, Fe, Al contents of sludges produced from sewage treatment plants and night soil treatment plant in Pocheon City, Gyeong-gi Province were investigated. And the accumulated contents of those metals in the earthworm Eisenia fetida were also investigated while 15, 30, 45, 60, 75, 90, 105 grams(dw) of sludges were cumulatively supplied to the earthworms. Zn contents of sludges were 75.1~196.1 mg/kg, Cu contents 3.74~76.1 mg/kg, Fe contents 219.9~857.8 mg/kg, Al contents 198.4~991.7 mg/kg, all of which would not cause acute toxicity to the earthworm, but could cause sublethal effects on earthworm and reduce the density of next generation's population. However, cumulative supplies of sludges didn't increase the bioaccumulation rates of metals in the earthworm body, and BAFs of those metals after 60g of sludge supply were 0.0~0.43, which meant that the accumulated Zn, Cu, Fe, Al contents in the earthworm were lower than those of sludges.

Concentrations of Chromium(Cr) and Manganese(Mn) in several kinds of dewatered organic sewage sludges generated from wastewater treatment plants of Pocheon City, Gyeongii Province were examined. In addition, bioaccumulations of Cr and Mn in the body of earthworm Eisenia fetida were also investigated by changing of feed sludge amounts. Cr and Mn concentrations in sludges were in the range of 0.0~0.3 mg/kg and 3.6~17.6 mg/kg, respectively, which would not cause acute toxicities to earthworm population. Cr was bioaccumulated in the earthworm body but bioaccumulation was not proportional to the amount of sludges supplied. The degree of bioaccumulation of Cr decreased in later phase as the supplied amounts of sludges increased. Meanwhile, there were rare bioaccumulation with regard to Mn. In this study, the value ranges of bioaccumulation factor (BAF) for Mn were 0.00~0.12 when 60g of sludges was supplied. In the case of Cr, the value of BAF was 19.33 when 60g of human manure sludge was provided.

In this study, we analyzed the physical and chemical properties such as proximate analysis, ultimate analysis, heating values, and thermogravimetric analysis for the organic sludges discharged from an industrial complex in Ulsan. The average water, combustible, and ash content of organic sludges were 72.9, 18.5, and 8.6%, respectively. And according to the ultimate analysis of organic sludges, the C, O, H, N, and S compositions were 33.9, 26.4, 4.4, 4.4, and 0.6%, respectively. According to the results of investigating the lower heating values, 6 sludges were on the range of $1,500{\sim}2,000\;kcal/kg$ and 4 sludges were on the range of over 2,000 kcal/kg. Therefore, these 10 sludges could be directly applied to industries which try to use the energy by direct incineration.
