  • Increasing soil surface roughness can be effective in enhancing infiltration of rainfall and depression storage capacity of forest soil and reducing surface run-off. In this study, a forest slope with hemispherical depressions shows greater infiltration of water, whereas depression storage capacity is higher in soil with depressions perpendicular to a water flow pathway. Soil pitting or forming surface depressions can be used as a countermeasure after forest fires and a practical way to reduce drought stress of forest soil.

  • The objective of this study is to establish the algorithm for contamination criterion map based on the recent weather condition. Present criterion was established by the study on the countermeasure of salt contamination for electrical equipment. It did not represent recent weather condition. Therefore it is necessary to develop a contamination criterion map for assessment of contamination in design areas in Korea. To develop contamination criterion map of seashore areas, we used relational numerical formula based on past measurement data with the amount of rainfall, geomorphic variables(elevation slope, land use). These results are expected to be used as a reference material for design distribution facilities in seashore areas.

  • Stability investigations were conducted for the heap of coal associated wastes occurred from D mine located in Gang-Won Province from the geotechnical and environmental engineering aspect, and a countermeasure was also examined to increase the stability in this area. Quality of water flowed from the heap of coal associated wastes was identified as Am. Slope stability investigations were conducted with both circular failure analyses using SLOPILE program and planar failure analyses in cases of dry, rainy, and ordinary slopes. The results of circular failure analyses indicated that the factor of safety is 0.78 for rainy case. for planar failure analyses, the factor of safety decreases with increase the depth and reaches below 1 about 4m depth for rainy case. A retaining wall system with backfill using the recycled-concrete aggregates as a practical scheme was suggested to satisfy both demands: reducing Am generation, and enhancing slope stability in the deposits of coal associated wastes.

  • It is important to study on the traffic accident severity reduction because traffic accident is an issue that is directly related to human life. Therefore, this research developed countermeasure to reduce traffic accident severity considering various factors that affect the accident severity. This research developed the Accident Severity Prediction Model using the collected accident data from Seohaean Expressway in 2004~2006. Through this model, we can find the influence factors and methodology to reduce accident severity. The results show that speed limit violation, vehicle defects, vehicle to vehicle accident, vehicle to person accident, traffic volume, curve radius CV(Coefficient of variation) and vertical slope CV were selected to compose the accident severity model. These are certain causes of the severe accident. The accidents by these certain causes present specific sections of Seohaean Expressway. The results indicate that we can prevent severe accidents by providing selected traffic information and facilities to drivers at specific sections of the Expressway.

  • Nanji-do is an island in Seoul, the area is 272ha, and in which gad was piled up waste discharged from Seoul metropolitan for 15 years(form March 1978 to March 1993). The volume of waste is 92, 000, 000m$^{2}$. The actual vegetation area of Nanji-do is 191ha, and the area of woody plant is 31ha. The rest area is covered by herbaceaus plant. In actual vegetation area of woody plant, Robinia pseudoacacia community and Salix pseudo-lasiogyne community are 83%. The soil pH is alkaline, though general soil pH is acid in Seoul. There is no relation with soil condition and actual vegetation. The result of this study, actual vegetation of Nanji-do don't help the establishment of vegetation restoration after soil stabilization construction. And so following a countermeasure is proposed. 1) Selection of adequate species by an experiment of planting pioneer species, native species, and dietary species 2) Establishment of an adequate planting plan and development of slope stabilization method by planting of native species 3) Establishment of a restoration plan of animal ecosystem by survey for animal ecosystem

  • This study analyzed the characteristic of basic river structure, a flood level, the tree planting recommendation and syn thetic design, in order to establish a basic plan for preparing a natural practical area of environmental ecosystem at Bukchun and its surroundings. It was also investigated based on the opinion of citizens, geographical condition and the equipment/utilization examination of Bukchun which were included ecological circumstances, and thus provided a composite item for managing the natural river. This study also considered the development of the river in terms of culture, environment and ecology concept. The results were summarized as followed. Bukchun showed that the speed of a funning fluid is very fast on a period of flood. but very slow in a period of water shortage about 0.02 m/s. To prevent the speed change of a running fluid by a steep slope in a riverbed, there established Dongchun sluice gates under a bridge, including three sluice gates under a bridge, but there occurred extremely a riverbed erosion and corrosion section. The result of comparison between real flood degree and prediction flood data, there should perform a countermeasure the riverbed structure regulation of this area. Also, it was needed an exhaustive flood management in summer. According to the Bukchun and Hyungsangang riverbed investigation, there were needed preparation for natural/practical area and ecology Park development in the future. This study was investigated tree Planting/flower/blossom around the Bukchun and its surroundings. It was recommended willow, Italian poplar, bamboos and cherry blossoms in the Hyungsangang and Bukchun. There exist together historical space, environment space iud have enough possibility both natural learning space and civil rest space. And, it is possible to compose ecology natural learning and experimental area.

  • Owing to the advantages of assuring the best views and seawater exchange, submerged breakwaters have been widely installed along the eastern coast of Korea in recent years. It significantly contributes to promoting the advancement of shorelines by partially inhibiting incident wave energy. Observations were carried out by a pressure-type wave gauge in the Bongpo Beach to evaluate the coefficients of wave transmission via a submerged breakwater, and the results obtained were compared with those of existing conventional equations on the transmission coefficient derived from hydraulic experiments. After reviewing the existing equations, we proposed a transmission coefficient equation in terms of an error function. Although it exhibited robust relationships with the crest height and breaking coefficient, deviations from the observed data were evident and considered to be triggered by the difference in the incident wave climate. Therefore, in this study, we conducted a numerical experiment to verify the influence of wave period on the coefficients of wave transmission, in which we adopted a parabolic-type mild-slope equation model. Consequently, the deviation from calculated results appears to practically cover all deviation range in the observed data. The wave period and direction of the incident wave increased, the transmission coefficient decreased, and the wave direction was determined to demonstrate a relatively significant influence on the transmission coefficient. It was inferred that this numerical study is expected to be used practically in evaluating the design achievement of the submerged breakwater, which is adopted as a countermeasure to coastal beach erosion.

  • Acid drainage has been recognized as an environmental concern in abandoned mine sites for long time. Recently, the environmental and structural damage by acid drainage is a current issue in construction sites in Korea. Here, the author introduces the type of damages by acid drainage in construction sites and emphasizes the importance of geoscience discipline in solving the problem. Metasedimentary rock of Okcheon group, coal bed of Pyeongan group, Mesozoic volcanic rock. and Tertiary sedimentary and volcanic rocks are the major rock types with a high potential for acid drainage upon excavation in Korea. The acid drainage causes the acidification and heavy metal contamination of soil, surface water and groundwater, the reduction of slope stability, the corrosion of slope structure, the damage on plant growth, the damage on landscape and the deterioration of concrete and asphalt pavement. The countermeasure for acid drainage is the treatment of acid drainage and the prevention of acid drainage. The treatment of acid drainage can be classified into active and passive treatments depending on the degree of natural process in the treatment. Removal of oxidants, reduction of oxidant generation and encapsulation of sulfide are employed for the prevention of acid drainage generation.

  • According to rapid increase of visitors to the Baekdudaegan, the most important ecosystem in Korea, fur climbing or outdoor recreation, deterioration of natural environment along the trail on the ridge of Baekdudaegan is becoming more serious. The purpose of this study is to research the deterioration condition of the trail between Manbokdae and Bokseongijae on the Baekdudaegan with intent to prepare the conservational management strategy fur the trail on the ridge of Baekdudaegan. To accomplish the purpose, not only trail condition such as altitude, entire width, bare width, maximum depth and slope of trail, but also deterioration types of trail were surveyed at the total 232 points for 28.4km in length. Furthermore, impact rating class, which could be effective means to check the step and extent of deterioration process, was judged on each points of trail. Putting together these results informs us that the deterioration condition of the trail between Manbokdae and Bokseongijae is not reached the level of grave concern yet, but prompt countermeasure to maintain the existing condition has to be considered with regard for the conditions of location and the increasing amounts of use.
