  • This study was conducted to obtain the basic research about Siberian roe deer (Capreolus pygargus), and to establish a conservation area into Seoraksan(Mt.) National Park, South Korea. We recorded Siberian roe deer field signs (bedding sites, feeding areas, feces and tracks etc), and habitat variables such as nearest distance to the watercourse, trails, slope, aspect, forest type and land cover etc. from Jan. 2006 to Dec. 2007 in Seoraksan(Mt.) National Park. According to the research of habitat characteristics of Siberian roe deer inhabited in Seoraksan(Mt.) National Park preferred mixed forest consisted of aged forest and middle-aged forest on the gentle slope which was close to hydrosphere in the middle elevation area of altitude of 400~600m above sea level in Seoraksan(Mt.) National Park. The results indicated that Siberian roe deer appeared to prefer south slope or north slope during the snow season and west or east slope during the non-snow season. The area of most suitable habitat for Siberian roe deer in Seoraksan(Mt.) National Park was $128.5km^2$ (32% of the total area) followed by $244.3km^2$ buffer area (62.2% of the total area), and $22.9km^2$ unsuitable habitat area (5.8% of the total area), which means environmentally unsuitable habitat for Siberian roe deer was rare in Seoraksan(Mt.) National Park. Thus, the area classified as major area in Seoraksan(Mt.) National Park appeared to be most important for the protection of Siberian roe deer.

  • Test application of revegetation measure was made on the roadside slope damaged by Gimcheon-Eomo national road improvement project in a bid to prevent the soil from being washed out as well as to restore the ecological environment, and the survey for assessing the effect of slope revegetation measures was conducted, beginning Sep 7 through Sep 20, 2006. In the wake of comprehensive reviewing and evaluating the surrounding topographic environment, physical and chemical characteristics of soil, germination of revegetation plants, analysis of bio mass, covering ratio and the plants appeared, revegetation measure C was found to have been most effective and desirable for further application in the area. Viewing the specific applicability by the area, revegetation measure C and C-1 appeared to be appropriate for blasting rock slope and ripping rock slope as they are efficient in preventing the slope from being washed out and in early revegetating. And revegetation measure B deemed to be effective to blasting rock slope or ripping rock slope as an alternative. And for cut slope, vegetation measure C-2 was judged to be more effective than measure D or E, while measure C-3 would be appropriateto embankment slope.

  • In this study, slope hazards mitigation methods for a natural terrain are systematically classified to survey the mitigation methods and develop a data base system. Also, field survey sheets which can be recorded the features of mitigation methods installed in the natural slope are developed. The slope hazards mitigation methods in the natural slope are classified as hillside part method and valley part method. The slope part sheet and the valley part sheet are also drawn up for field survey. As the result of the filed survey of mitigation methods about 50 points in Muju and Jangsu area, grass painting and slope covering methods are dominant in case of slopes part. In case of valley part, slit dam, concrete check dam and slope foot barrier are applied simultaneously.

  • The goal of this study is to assess the spatial distribution of natural slopes and cutting slopes under would-be development. For this goal, a quantitative slope stability analysis method using GIS integrated with a computer program was developed. Through field investigations, the discontinuity parameters were collected such as orientation of discontinuity, persistence, spacing, JRC, JCS, and water depth. The distributions were interpolated from the ordinary kriging method in ARC/INFO GIS after variogram analysis. The layers showing all parameters needed for limit equilibrium analysis were constructed. The final layer using GIS works composed of 162,352 polygons, that is, unit slopes. The rock slope stability analysis program was coded by C++ language. This program can calculate geometrical vectors related to rock block failures using input orientation data and direction and dimension of strength to occur failure. Also, this can calculate shear strength of joints through empirical equations and quantitative factors of safety. This methodology was applied to the study area which is located in Jaecheon city and Danyang-gun of the northeastern Keumsu is about 135$km^2$. As a result, the study area was entirely stable but unstable, that is, factor of safety less than 1.0dominantly at the slopes near Keumsil, Daejangri, Keumsungmyun and Sojugol, Mt. Dongsan, Juksongmyun by the natural slope stability analysis. Assuming the cutting slope showing the same direction immediate, and quantitative analysis of factors of safety for a regional area could be conducted through GIS integrated with a computer program of limit equilibrium.

  • Steep slope disasters accompany economic loss along with casualties, so the evaluation and the systematic management on the regions with slope collapse danger are required. A lot of manpower, time, and economic cost are needed to accumulate disaster history of steep slope areas by the national and small-sized region. As the method for this, it construed location data about each area with disaster occurrence by maknd elocation data of collapsed steep areas through high-resolution satellite image and collectnd edata on the regions with disasters through media and literature data such as a disaster annual report and a disaster comprehensive report. The study selected three shortest routes includnd ethe area with disaster in Jeolla province on literature and the collapsed area found by the image data, and constructed the results of the field survey as database.

  • In September 2007, the collapses of slopes and landslides are happened at Jeonlanamdo due to heavy rains accompanied with Typoon "Nari". The study area is the tunnel portal slope in new road construction site. This slope consists of pyroclastic rocks and has lots of faults. Particularly, the residual soils of the slope is deteriorated with yellowish mudstone layer as a results of chemical and physical weathering. This has a variety of swelling clay minerals and might be moved easily down at the gentle terrain. The inner factor of $\bigcirc\bigcirc$tunnel portal slope's collapse is the geological weak zone, the convergent topography, the inferiority of drainage and the heavy rain act on the failure as direct trigger.

  • The purpose of this study is as follows: First, we restore the optimal topographical environment of the Bronze Age settlements in the Yongdu Stream and its surrounding area in Asan City. Second, we reveal the relative importance of the topographical factors that the Bronze Age people considered when selecting their dwelling locations. We compared and analyzed topographical factors (ridge scale, ridge direction, slope direction of the ridge, micro-landform of the ridge, position of the ridge) from the ridge's environmental perspective of 123 Bronze Age dwellings (hereinafter referred to as dwellings) found in the survey area for that purpose. The results are as follows: First, from a macro perspective, the optimal topographical environment for the location of the Bronze Age settlement is the second ridge that have the E-W direction. And from a micro perspective, it is the southeast direction slope of the Crest slope at the summit. Second, it appears that the Bronze Age people have taken important consideration in determining the location of their dwelling in the following order: ① position (eg. summit), ② micro-landform (eg. Crest slope, Upper slope), ③ slope direction (eg. southward, South, Southeast), ④ scale (eg. sub-ridge, secondary, tertiary), ⑤ direction (eg. E-W, NNE-SSE).

  • In every summer season, most of the slope failures and debris flows occurr due to seasonal rain, typhoon, and localized extreme rainfall in Gangwon Province where 83% of the area is of mountain region. To investigate the slope-hazard triggering rainfall characteristics in Gangwon Province, slope hazard data, precipitation records, and forest fire data were collected and the DATABASE was constructed. Analysis results based on the DATABASE showed that many slope hazards occurred when there was little rainfall and the preceding rainfall had more effect on the slope hazard than the rainfall intensity at the day of hazard. It also showed that the burned area by forest fire was highly susceptible to slope hazard with low rainfall intensity, and the slope hazard in burned area showed highest frequency, especially, under the rainfall below 2-year return period.

  • This study area show the complicated geological figure and some developed small fault area in southern of Korea. Because of insufficient investigation and design for the big slope, even the safety analysis by the specific institution, in the event, there were 6 times failure and 6 time safety analysis. After all, The height and remedial work cost of the slope became much bigger then early stage.
