  • A new type of earthquake-resisting element that consists of a steel plate shear wall with slits is introduced. The infill steel plate is divided into a series of vertical flexural links with vertical links. The steel plate shear walls absorb energy by means of in-plane bending deformation of the flexural links and the energy dissipation capacity of the plastic hinges formed at both ends of the flexural links when under lateral loads. In this paper, finite element analysis and experimental studies at low cyclic loadings were conducted on specimens with steel plate shear walls with multilayer slits. The effects caused by varied slit pattern in terms of slit design parameters on lateral stiffness, ultimate bearing capacity and hysteretic behavior of the shear walls were analyzed. Results showed that the failure mode of steel plate shear walls with a single-layer slit was more likely to be out-of-plane buckling of the flexural links. As a result, the lateral stiffness and the ultimate bearing capacity were relatively lower when the precondition of the total height of the vertical slits remained the same. Differently, the failure mode of steel plate shear walls with multilayer slits was prone to global buckling of the infill steel plates; more obvious tensile fields provided evidence to the fact of higher lateral stiffness and excellent ultimate bearing capacity. It was also concluded that multilayer specimens exhibited better energy dissipation capacity compared with single-layer plate shear walls.

  • In this paper, an analysis of TE-wave scattering from transversal-shifted tandem slits using fourier transform analysis and Wiener-Hopf technique are derived and the electrical performances have been compared with a commercially availabel software. In Fourier transform analysis, it is shown that a fast-convergent series solution can be obtained when the distance between the slits is very narrow, while in Wiener-Hopf technique, it is found that the highly-accurate approximation can be obtained when the gap between the slits becomes wider. In addition, this paper has dealt with a good agreement between two analytical solutions.

  • A new type electrolyzing cell with slits on parallel plate electrodes and wire-to-cylinder type electrode system has been proposed instead of the conventional parallel plate type. An investigation was carried out on the effect of the number and size of slits on ion precipitation and oxidant generation characteristics, evidenced by eliminated space charge limiting action and by elevated electric fields in active interelectrode spacing. And it is also studied on the effect of the diameter of wire electrode to ion precipitation and oxidant generation characteristics. With electrode with 48 slits, very oxidants generation water of 3.1 [ppmm] and 19.0 [ppmm] in positive electrode side were obtained with tap water and 0.1 [wt%] NaCl dissolved tap waterfed. In addition, with wire-to-cylinder type electrode system, it is found that oxidant contained water of 0.48 [ppmm] and 5.46 [ppmm] in positive electrode side were obtained with tap water and 0.1 [wt%] NaCl dissolved tap water fed for the case of discharge electrode diameter of 0.5 [$mm{\phi}$]. Consequently, very high ion precipitation and dense oxidant generation characteristics can be realized by having slits on the electrodes of conventional cell as these slits increase the electric fields and decrease the space charge limiting actions in interelectrode spacing.

  • A novel oxidant generation and ion precipitation cell with slits on parallel plate electrodes system has been proposed and an effect of the number and size of slits on ion precipitation and oxidant generation characteristics. As a result, with the electrodes with 48 slits($S=200{\times}60[mm^2]$. d = 1.5, 5.0 [mm]), it is found that the oxidant contained waters of 17.0 [ppmm] and 23.5 [ppmm] in acid water were obtained with 0.1 [wt%] NaCl dissolved tap water fed. And oxidant contained waters of 0.5 [ppmm] and 1.5 [ppmm] in alkali water were obtained with 0.1 [wt%] NaCl dissolved tap water fed. And the oxidant contained waters of 7.0 [ppmm] and 11.5 [ppmm] in mixed water were obtained with tap water and 0.1 [wt%] NaCl dissolved tap water fed. Consequently, very high ion precipitation and dense oxidant generation characteristics can be realized by having slits on the electrodes of conventional cells as these slits increase the electric fields and decrease the space charge limiting actions in interelectrode space.

  • A novel design for equilateral-triangular microstrip antennas with switchable resonant frequency is proposed. For dual-frequency operation, the proposed design is achieved by loading a pair of slits in the triangular patch, and two PIN diodes are utilized to switch the slits on or off. By increasing the length of the slits, the lower resonant frequency can be varied in the range from 1.22 GHz to 1.72 GHz whereas the upper resonant frequency remains unchanged.

  • This paper presents an eddy current loss analysis for a transverse flux rotary machine (TFRM) with laminated stator cores, which consist of inner and outer cores whose laminated directions are perpendicular to each other. Although the TFRM is laminated to reduce eddy current losses, it still exhibits rapidly increasing core losses as the frequency increases. To solve this problem, slits are introduced to the stator outer core. 3-dimensional finite element analysis (3D FEA) based on the T-${\Omega}$ formulation is used to solve the eddy-current problem for a various numbers of slits in the nonlinear lamination core. The effects of the slits are confirmed using experiment data and 3D FEA results.

  • Slit shear walls an reinforced concrete shear wall structures with purposely built-in vertical slits. If the slits are inserted with visco-elastic damping materials, the shear walls will become viscoelastic sandwich beams. When adequately designed, this kind of structures can be quite effective in resisting earthquake loads. Herein, a simple analysis method is developed for the evaluation of the stochastic responses of visco-elastic slit shear walls. In the proposed method, the stiffness and mass matrices are derived by using Rayleigh-Ritz method, and the responses of the structures are calculated by means of complex modal analysis. Apart from slit shear walls, this analysis method is also applicable to coupled shear walls and cantilevered sandwich beams. Numerical examples are presented and the results clearly show that the seismic responses of shear wall structures can be substantially reduced by incorporating vertical slits into the walls and inserting visco-elastic damping materials into the slits.

  • A hybrid focus method with multiple laser slits has been newly proposed and it is based on the integration of DFD and DFF Rough depth information is estimated using DFD equipped with multiple laser slits, and then DFF is applied to only each specific depth range using the depth information resulting from DFD. The proposed hybrid method gives more accurate results than DFD and DFF, and faster measurement than DFF. Its performance has been verified through experiments of calibration blocks with sharp depth discontinuity.

  • In this paper, the problem of electromagnetic transmission through slits in two parallel conducting plates which separate two half spaces is considered. The coupled integral equations for the electric field distributions over the slits are developed for the case that the TM polarized plane wave is incident on the slit and solved by the method of moments. The transmitted power beyond the slit-perforated conducting parallel plates is computed in order to check the variations of the coupled power through slits against some parameters such as the incident angle of the TM polarized wave, slit width, lateral distance between two slits, and distance between the conducting plates. When the lateral distance between two slits approaches near the multiples of half wavelengths, the transmission resonance (maximum power transmission) is observed. If the slit width in the incident side is narrow and the distance between conducting plates is small compared to the wavelength, the maximum of transmitted power is observed to be nearly independent of the incident angle and slit width. In addition, the mechanism of the transmission resonance in the present geometry is explained using a simplified geometry and its equivalent circuit.
