During mechanical demolition of RC structures, weights of dismantling equipment and demolition waste of building are applied to unexpected load which did not be considered during the design of structural member. Nevertheless, the loading of dismantling equipment and dismantling process are mainly dependent on field managers' field workers' or experiences without considering safety of structural member by a structural engineer. It is urgently required that reflecting actual circumstance of mechanical demolition, safety evaluation method to evaluate the safety and the guideline for appropriate capacity of structural member to support dismantling equipment weight, be provided. Through site investigation and questionnaire on field workers, this paper proposed demolition waste load, load factor, strength reduction factor, and so on. These are essential to safe evaluation of a building, ready to demolition. Considering actual circumstance of mechanical demolition, safety evaluation method of building and design method of slab and beam was suggested to a dilapidated building. An capability to loading of dismantling equipment was proposed, applied to RC slab and RC beam. Therefore, the suggested safety evaluation method and the guideline for an capability to loading of dismantling equipment weight can reasonably evaluate the capacity of structural member in demolition and use effectively as increasing efficiency and improving safety of demolition through proper management of dismantling equipments.
Recently in Japan, fracturing was observed on the diagonal member of a through truss bridge at the boundary region with the concrete slab. Local corrosion damage where the diagonal member was enclosed in the concrete slab is an important factor in the fracture. In this study, accelerated exposure tests were carried out on concrete-steel model specimens simulating steel members at the boundary with concrete. Fatigue tests were then performed on the corroded model specimens. Accelerated exposure tests of the S6-cycle, which is carried out on the model specimens for 150, 300, 450 and 600 da ys. Their surface geometry was then measured. From the accelerated exposure test results, change in maximum and mean corrosion depths was determined according to the testing periods. The effect of local corrosion on fatigue strength was also presented based on the fatigue test results.

At construction sites, interest in the production of precast materials is increasing due to off-site conditions due to changes in construction site conditions due to increased labor costs and the Act on the Punishment of Serious Accidents. In particular, the precast prestressed hollow slab has a hollow shape in the cross section, so structural performance is secured by reducing weight and controlling deflection through stranded wires. With the application of structural standards, the urgency of securing fire resistance performance is emerging. In this study, a fire-resistance cross section was developed by reducing the concrete filling rate in the cross section and improving the upper and lower flange shapes by optimizing the hollow shape in the cross section of the slab to have the same or better structural performance and economic efficiency compared to the existing hollow slab. The PC hollow slab to which this was applied was subjected to a two-hour fire resistance test using the cross-sectional thickness as a variable, and as a result of the test, fire resistance performance (load bearing capacity, heat shielding property, flame retardance property) was secured. Based on the experimental results, it is determined that fire resistance modeling can be established through numerical analysis simulation, and prediction of fire resistance analysis is possible according to the change of the cross-sectional shape in the future.
The objective of this work is to study the restraining effect in fire resistance of framed structures and to evaluate the global response of reinforced concrete frames when exposed to fire based on advanced finite element method. To study the response a single portal frame is analyzed. The effect of floor slab on this frame is studied by modeling a beam-column-slab assembly. The evolution of temperature distribution, internal stresses and deformations of the frame subjected to ISO 834 standard fire curve for both the frames are studied. The thermal and structural responses are evaluated and a comparison of results of individual members and entire structure is done. From the study it can be seen that restraining forces has significant influence on both stresses and deflection and overall response of the structure when compared to individual structural member. Among the various structural elements, columns are the critical members in fire and failure of column causes the failure of entire structure. The fire rating of various structural elements of the frame is determined by various failure criteria and is compared with IS456 2000 tabulated fire rating.
This study aims to verify a method for accurately estimating the sizes of the column, slab, and beam members of concrete structures using the impact echo method, which is a nondestructive testing method. The concrete specimens are designed and fabricated with six single-layer frame specimens composed of columns, slabs, and beam members based on three strengths of 24, 30, and 40 MPa. To estimate the sizes of the members according to the member types of concrete structures, the experiment was performed using the impact echo method. As a result of estimating the sizes of the concrete column members using the impact echo method, the error rate is 2.9%. As a result of estimating the depth of the concrete beam members, the error rate is 9.7%. And, as a result of estimating the thickness of the concrete slab members, the error rate is 2.4%. These results confirmed that quality control of the members of concrete structures is possible by estimating their sizes using a non-destructive testing method.

Conventional apartment building projects have favored wall slab structure for the ease of construction and economic viability. However, wall slab structure, consisting of bearing walls, makes remodeling a difficult challenge. In addition, as the amendment to the Building Act in November, 2005 incentivized easy-to-remodel Rahmen structure design for apartment building in terms of floor area ratio and the number of stories, were are seeing more use of PC construct method in apartment building projects gradually. However, PC construction method requires complex connections between beams and columns, making it difficult to install and remove formwork. Furthermore, it is not possible to reuse forms after removal, generating lots of construction wastes, and it is necessary to install new forms again when the size of connection changes in line with modification of column cross-section. Researchers in Korea and elsewhere in the world have focused on structural performance of connection in PC construction method, with little attention to alternative approaches to improving connection forms for PC construction method. Accordingly, this research aims to study an approach to improving connection forms for PC construction method.
This paper discusses the results and observations from a large-scale fire test conducted on a slim floor system, comprising asymmetric beams, rectangular hollow section beams and a composite floor slab. The structure was subjected to a fire where the fire load (combustible material) was higher that that found in typical office buildings and the ventilation area was artificially controlled during the test. Although the fire behaviour was not realistic it was designed to follow as closely as possible the time-temperature response used in standard fire tests, which are used to assess individual structural members and forms the bases of current fire design methods. The presented test results are limited, due to the malfunction of the instrumentation measuring the atmosphere and member temperatures. The lack of test data hinders the presentation of definitive conclusions. However, the available data, together with observations from the test, provides for the first time a useful insight into the behaviour of the slim floor system in its entirety. Analysis of the test results show that the behaviour of the beam-to-column connections had a significant impact on the overall structural response of the system, particularly when the end-plate of one of the connections fractured, during the fire.
This paper discusses generalized modeling schemes for both reinforced concrete (RC) and post-tensioned (PT) flat plate buildings. In this modeling approach, nonlinear behavior due to slab flexure, moment and shear transfer at slab-column connections, and punching shear was included along with linear secant stiffness of each member or connection that accounts for concrete cracking. This generalized model was capable of simulating all different scenarios of slab-column connection failures such as brittle punching, flexure-shear interactive failure, and flexural failure followed by drift-induced punching. Furthermore, automatic detection of drift-induced punching shear and subsequent backbone curve modifications were realistically modelled by incorporating the limit state model, in which gravity shear versus drift capacity relations were adopted. The validation of the model was conducted using one-third scale two-story by two-bay RC and PT flat plate frames. The comparisons revealed that the model was robust and effective.

Openings in slabs are usually required for many different applications such as aeriation ducts and air conditioning. Opening in concrete slabs due to cutouts significantly decrease the member stiffness. There are different techniques to strengthen slabs with opening cutouts. This study presents experimental and numerical investigations on the use of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymers (CFRP) as strengthening material to strengthen and restore the load carrying capacity of R.C. slabs after having cutout in the hogging moment region. The experimental program consisted of testing five (oneway spanning R.C. flat slabs) with overhang. All slabs were prismatic, rectangular in cross-section and nominally 2000 mm long, 1000 mm width, and 100 mm thickness with a clear span (distance between supports) of 1200 mm and the overhang length is 700 mm. All slabs were loaded up to 30 kN (45% of ultimate load for reference slab, before yielding of the longitudinal reinforcement), then the load was kept constant during cutting concrete and steel bars (producing cut out). After that operation, slabs were loaded till failure. An analytical study using finite element analysis (FEA) is performed using the commercial software ANSYS. The FEA has been validated and calibrated using the experimental results. The FE model was found to be in a good agreement with the experimental results. The investigated key parameters were slab aspect ratio for the opening ratios of [1:1, 2:1], CFRP layers and the laminates widths, positions for cutouts and the CFRP configurations around cutouts.
This study is aimed at identifying structural element stiffness influence on vertical earthquake response of mid-rise R/C frame buildings. To this aim, a mid-rise RC building structure is designed as per the new Turkish Seismic Code for Buildings-2018, and 3D FE model of the building is established. Based on the established FE model, a total number of six buildings are considered depending on certain percentage increase in beam, slab, and column. The time-history response analyses (THA) are performed separately for only horizontal (H) and horizontal +vertical (H+V) earthquake motions to make a comparison between the load cases. The analysis results are presented comparatively in terms of the monitoring parameters of the base overturning moment (Mo), the top-story lateral displacement (dL) and the top-story vertical displacement (dV). The obtained results reveal that the base overturning moment and the top-story vertical displacement are affected by vertical earthquake motion regardless of the increase in the dimension of beam, slab, and column. However, vertical earthquake motion is not effective on the top-story lateral displacement due to no change between H and H+V load. The dimensional increase in either slab or beam leads to a considerable increase in the base overturning moment and the top-story vertical displacement while causing decrease in the top-story lateral displacement. In addition, the dimensional increase in column has a positive effect on the decrease in the monitoring parameters of the base overturning moment (Mo), the top-story lateral displacement (dL) and the top-story vertical displacement (dV).
