Face Detection Algorithm Using Pulse-Coupled Neural Network (Pulse-Coupled Neural Network를 이용한 얼굴추출 알고리즘)

  • In this work, we suggested the method which improves the efficiency of the face detection algorithm using Pulse-Coupled Neural Network. Face detection algorithm which uses the color information is independent on size, angle, and obstruction of a face. But the use of color information encounters some problems arising from skin-tone color in the background, intensity variation within faces, and presence of random noise, and so on. Depending on these conditions, we obtained the mean and variance of skin-tone colors by experiments. Then we introduce a preprocess that the pixel with a mean value of skin-tone colors has highest level value(255) and the other pixels in the skin-tone region have values between 0 and 255 according to a normal distribution with a variance. This preprocess leads to an easy decision of the linking parameters.

  • The principal features of a face are as follows : skin-tone, symmetry, and requisites such as shape of ellipse, eyes, nose, mouth. Also, faces have different size, various shape and position. In case of application of face recognition and detection without preprocessing, efficiency of the performance is decreased. In addition, face itself, complex background, image quality, etc. are included. Therefore, previous face recognition methods are implemented on the base of specific constraints of the face image. In this paper, we propose the efficient and automatic face detection algorithm for minimizing influence such as complex background, image quality, etc. This face detection technique consists of skin-tone, candidate face region and face region extractions.

  • In this work, we have investigated a role of linking parameter in Pulse-Coupled Neural Network(PCNN) which is suggested to explain the synchronous activities among neurons in the cat cortex. Then we have found a method to determine the linking parameter for a satisfactory face detection performance in a given color image. Face detection algorithm which uses the color information is independent on pose, size and obstruction of a face. But the use of color information encounters some problems arising from skin-tone color in the background, intensity variation within faces, and presence of random noise and so on. Depending on these conditions, PCNN's linking parameters should be selected an appropriate values. First we obtained the mean and variance of the skin-tone colors by experiments. Then, we introduced a preprocess that the pixel with a mean value of skin-tone colors has the highest level value (255) and the other pixels have values between 0 and 255 according to normal distribution with a variance. This preprocessing leads to an easy decision of the linking parameter of the Pulse-Coupled Neural Network. Through experiments, it is verified that the proposed method can improve the face detection performance compared to the existing methods.

  • In this paper, face recognition algorithm, by using skin color information of HSI color coordinate collected from face images, elliptical mask, fratures of face including eyes, nose and mouth, and geometrical feature vectors of face and facial angles, is proposed. The proposed algorithm improved face region extraction efficacy by using HSI information relatively similar to human's visual system along with color tone information about skin colors of face, elliptical mask and intensity information. Moreover, it improved face recognition efficacy with using feature information of eyes, nose and mouth, and Θ1(ACRED), Θ2(AMRED) and Θ 3(ANRED), which are geometrical face angles of face. In the proposed algorithm, it enables exact face reading by using color tone information, elliptical mask, brightness information and structural characteristic angle together, not like using only brightness information in existing algorithm. Moreover, it uses structural related value of characteristics and certain vectors together for the recognition method.

  • When we detect side-view face in color image, we decide a candidate face region using skin-tone color, and confirm to the face by template matching. Cang Wei use a left and a right template of face, calculate to similarity value by hausdorff method, and decide the final side-view face. It has a characteristic that side-view face is wide spreading neck region. To get exactly result, face region is separated vertically by 3 pixel unit, and matched template. In this paper, we assume that a side-view face is a right side-view or a left side-view face. We separate a half of the candidate face region vertically, and regard a left side as left candidate face, a right side as right candidate face by template matching. This method detect faster than Gang Wei method.

  • Automatic human face detection in a complex background is one of the difficult problems. In this paper, we propose an effective and robust automatic face detection approach that can locate the face region in natural scene images when the system is used as a pre-processor of a face recognition system . We use two natural and powerful visual cues, the skin color and the eyes. In the first step of the proposed system, the method based on the human skin color space by selecting flesh tone regions using normalized r-g space in color images. In the next step, we extract eye features by calculating moments and using geometrical face model. Experimental results demonstrate that the approach can efficiently detect human faces and satisfactory deal with the problems caused by bad lighting condition, skew face orientation.

  • In a color image, people and especially facial patterns are important and interesting visual objects. Thus, effective skin color reproduction is essential, as skin color is a key memory color in color application systems. Previous studies suggested skin color reproduction by mapping only to the center value of preferred skin region. However, it is not suitable to determine one preference color because preference color from the observer's preference test is not dominant. In this paper, skin color reproduction using multiple preferred skin colors for each race is proposed. The proposed method first defines multiple preferred skin colors for each race according to their luminance level. After that, skin region is detected in an image. The race is then selected by calculating distance between average chromaticity of detected region and that of each racial skin from a database to assign preferred skin color for each race. Next, each corresponding preferred skin color is determined for each selected race. Finally, input skin color is proportionally mapped toward preferred skin color according to the difference between the input skin color and the preferred skin color for a smoothly reproduced skin color. In the experimental results, the proposed method gives better color correction on the objective and subjective evaluation than the previous methods.

In the first step of the proposed system, we have tried the approach of fitting the best Possible ellipse to the outline of the head In the next step, the method based on the human skin color space by selecting flesh tone regions in color images and histogramming their r(=R/(R+G+B)) and g(=G/R+G+B)) values. According to our experiment. the proposed system shows robust location results

  • In this paper, we propose a detection method for facial features in color images with various backgrounds and face poses. To begin with, the proposed method extracts face candidacy region from images with various backgrounds, which have skin-tone color and complex objects, via the color and edge information of face. And then, by using the elliptical shape property of face, we correct a rotation, scale, and tilt of face region caused by various poses of head. Finally, we verify the face using features of face and detect facial features. In our experimental results, it is shown that accuracy of detection is high and the proposed method can be used in pose-invariant face recognition system effectively
