  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the skin whitening effect of Scirpi rhizama ethanol extract (SREE) in an animal model. For the experiment of the study, three brown guinea pigs weighing about 450 g to 550 g were exposed to ultraviolet-B rays on the backs at 500 $mJ/cm^2$ once a week, three consecutive weeks and the total quantity of light was 1,500 $mJ/cm^2$. The artificial tanning spots were divided into six different groups including normal (N), control (C), vehicle control (VC), positive control (PC), experimental 1 (E1, 1% SREE), experimental 2 (E2, 2% SREE) groups. Then, 30 ${\mu}L$ of SREE was transdermaly applied on the artificial tanning spots twice a day and 5 days a week for 8 weeks. With the result of a gross observation, it was found that the degree of pigmentation became apparently thinner in the group applied with E2, compared to the control or the vehicle control group. The melanin index of E2 group was significant lower than the control or the vehicle control group. In the observation with a light microscope, it was found that the degree of melanin pigmentation and S-100 protein expression considerably decreased in the groups applied with SREE, compared to the control or the vehicle control group. With the numerical analysis of melanin pigmentation and S-100 protein expression by using image-analysis software, it was found that the tendency was coincide with the results of microscopic observation.

  • The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of face wash with ginseng cold process (CP) soap. In order to remove external environmental factors, skin changes were examined immediately after 10 minutes of face wash. The same water and towel were used at the same place. As a control group, the cases of washing with water without using cleanser and with foam cleanser (F/C), which is a popular commercial product, were set. In the case of water washing, there was a significant decrease in pores and pigmentation, but the significance was small. In the case of F/C washing, there was a very significant decrease in pores and pigmentation, but the loss of moisture was rapid. In the case of ginseng cp soap, pores and pigmentation were significantly reduced, while moisture loss was negligible. Ginseng cp soap is considered as a form of face wash that is suitable for skin care.

  • The effect of supplemental yellow ${\beta}$-8-Apo-carotenoic acid ethyl ester (ACA) (0~300mg/kg feed) on its accumulation in each body part of laying hens and the pigmentation in egg yolk was determined. The chickens used in this study were 78-wk-old ISA brown laying hens. ACA significantly affected the color of the bodies of laying hens. The yellowness ($b^*$) but not the redness ($a^*$) and, the lightness ($L^*$) of the skin, and muscle as measured by a colorimeter significantly (P < 0.05) increased when ACA was fed at 50~100 mg/kg feed. Egg yolk color was also significantly affected by feeding ACA longer than 2 days (P < 0.05) at the levels higher than 50 mg/kg feed. Conclusively, ACA is recommended for improving yellowness of skin.

  • The non-ablative fractional dual laser is equipped with two types of lasers, 1550 nm and 1927 nm in one device, and was approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration in 2013. The advantages of the non-ablative fractional laser (NAFL) include fewer side effects such as erythema, edema, post-laser pigmentation, and scab formation. Thus, the NAFL is preferred by both practitioners and consumers because it is convenient and safe for use. The 1550 nm erbium glass and 1927 nm thulium lasers are representative NAFLs that have been developed separately and are often used as a single-wavelength laser with proven clinical efficacy in various indications. The 1550 nm wavelength laser penetrates the dermis layer and the 1927 nm wavelength laser is effective for epidermal lesions. Therefore, targeting the skin layer can be easily achieved with both the 1550 and 1927 nm lasers, respectively, or in combination. Clinically, the 1550 nm laser is effective in the treatment of mild to moderate sagging and wrinkles, scars, and resurfacing. The 1927 nm laser improves skin texture and treats skin pigmentation and wounds. It can also be used for drug delivery. The selection and utilization rate of NAFL has been increasing in recent times, due to changes in lifestyle patterns and the need for beauty treatments with fewer side effects and short downtime. In this study, we present a plan for safe and effective laser therapy through a review of literature. Clinical applications of the multifunctional NAFL are also described.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of dietary supplementation of paprika powder as carotenoid source with three different zooplankton on carotenoid deposition and skin pigmentation of rose bitterling Rhodeus ocellatus. Two replicate groups of fish (initial average weight 0.8 g) were fed the five experimental diets containing 5% paprika (P5) and mixture of 5% paprika with 3% three zooplankton of water flea Moina macrocopa (P5M3), Artemia nauplius Artemia sp. (P5A3) and rotifer Brachionus plicatilis (P5R3) and without supplementation of carotenoid source (Con) for 10 weeks. Survival of fish among the treatments was not affected by dietary supplementation. Total carotenoid contents of whole body in fish fed the diets containing 3% zooplankton was higher than that of fish fed other diets. Especially, the highest total carotenoid contents of whole body was observed in fish fed the P5A3 diet. Similarity, Lightness, $a^*$ and $b^*$ values of the fish fed the diets containing 3% zooplankton tended to be higher than that in fish fed control and P5 diets. The apparent color intensity of skin and fin in fish fed the diets containing paprika with Artemia nauplius and rotifer was better than those of fish fed other diets. The results of this study suggest that dietary supplementation of paprika with Artemia nauplius and rotifer can improve skin pigmentation of rose bitterling.

  • In this paper, we introduce a digital cross-polarization and fluorescent color imaging system for quantitative evaluation of skin lesions. We describe the characterization of the imaging systems and the quantitative image analysis methods to show the feasibility for quantitative evaluation of skin lesions. The polarization color image was used to compute erythema and melanin index image which are useful for quantitative evaluation of pigmentation and vascular skin lesions, respectively. The fluorescent color image was used to quantitatively evaluate "sebum" and "vitiligo". In quantitative evaluation of various skin lesions, we confirmed the clinical efficacy of the imaging systems for dermatological applications. Finally, we sure that the imaging systems can be utilized as important assistant tools for the evaluation of skin lesions by providing reproducible quantitative result for widely distributed skin lesions.

  • Purpose. Hypertrophic scarring and depression are the principal problems of bum rehabilitation. This study was done to verify the effects of skin rehabilitation massage therapy (SRMT) on pruritus, skin status, and depression for Korean bum survivors. Methods. A pretest - posttest design using a nonequivalent control group was applied to examine the effects of SRMT for 3 months in a group of 18 bum survivors. The major dependent variables - including pruritus, objective and subjective scar status, and depression - were measured at the beginning and at the end of the therapy to examine the effects of SRMT. Results. Bum survivors receiving SRMT showed reduced pruritus, improved skin status, and depression. The remaining scar also showed improvement in skin pigmentation, pliability, vascularity, and height (compared to the surrounding skin) as measured on the Vancouver Scar Scale (VSS). Conclusions. The findings demonstrate that SRMT for bum survivors may improve their scars both objectively and subjectively, and also reduce pruritus and depression.

  • Nitric oxide (NO) is a signaling molecule that plays a crucial role in numerous cellular physiological processes. In the skin, NO is produced by keratinocytes, fibroblasts, endothelial cells, and immune cells and is involved in skin functions such as vasodilation, pigmentation, hair growth, wound healing, and immune responses. NO modulates both innate and adaptive immune responses. As a signaling molecule and cytotoxic effector, NO influences the function of immune cells and production of cytokines. NO is a key mediator that protects against or contributes to skin inflammation. Moreover, NO has been implicated in skin sensitization, a process underlying contact dermatitis. It modulates the function of dendritic cells and T cells, thereby affecting the immune response to allergens. NO also plays a role in contact dermatitis by inducing inflammation and tissue damage. NO-related chemicals, such as nitrofatty acids and nitric oxide synthase (NOS) inhibitors, have potential therapeutic applications in skin conditions, including allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) and irritant contact dermatitis (ICD). Further research is required to fully elucidate the therapeutic potential of NO-related chemicals and develop personalized treatment strategies for skin conditions.

  • The aim of this study was to understand the effects of skin pigmentation on physiological parameters of thermoregulation and grazing behaviour of dairy goats in a hot and humid climate. The study used 26 crossbred Saanen yearling goats (95% Saanen+5% Local Hair Breed). The animals were raised at semi-intensive private farms in Adana (36 59'N, 35 18'E). Groups were selected 2 d before the start of observations. Goats were categorized as predominantly pigmented (P) skin and unpigmented (UP) skin. All observations and measurements were collected on grassland during the grazing period of June and July 2007 (60 d). Air temperature and relative humidity were recorded at 10 min intervals by a portable data logger. The physiological data (rectal temperature, respiration and pulse rate, and skin temperatures from head and udder) were recorded twice weekly in the morning (07:00-08:00); at midday (13:00-14:00); and in the evening (18:00-19:00). Additionally, the activity of the animals was observed and classified (eating, ruminating, drinking, standing, walking, lying) for 12 h during the day twice weekly, using a portable camera system linked directly to a computer. Panting behaviour was also observed. According to the THI values, the experimental goats were subjected to stressful conditions. The pigmented goats had significantly lower rectal temperatures (39.68 vs. $29.89^{\circ}C$), pulse rate (74.08 vs. 84.10 beat/min) and respiration rate (65.65 vs. 88.23 breath/min.) compared with unpigmented goats at midday when the THI exceeded 92. The rectal, head and udder temperatures, pulse and respiration rates of the non-pigmented group exceeded $40^{\circ}C$, $37^{\circ}C$, $37.5^{\circ}C$, 84 beats/min and 78 breaths/min, respectively. Higher activity was observed among pigmented compared with unpigmented goats. Unpigmented goats grazed (4.3 vs. 5.6 h), ruminated (2.0 vs. 2.4 h), and stood (0.8 vs. 1.2 h) less, but lay down (2.2 vs. 1.8 h) more than pigmented goats. The data obtained in this experiment support the hypothesis that unpigmented goats are more adversely affected by climatic stress, likely due to their decreased activity and increased water consumption, as demonstrated by previous studies.
