  • To evaluate an effect of toluene application to skin on the enhancement of liver damage in $CCl_4$-pretreated rats, toluene (35 mg/$cm^2$) was sequentially applied for 5 days to the skin of liver damaged rats with $CCl_4$ (6 times every other day: 0.1 ml/100 g body weight-50% $CCl_4$ in olive oil) On the basis of the functional and morphological findings in rat liver, appling toluene to the skin in liver damaged animals led to the more enhanced liver damage. In addition, by applying toluene to skin of liver damaged rats, the hepatic cytochrome P450 content was somewhat more increased, but the hepatic benzylalcohol dehydrogenase activity was significantly decreased (P<0.001), whereas benzaldehyde dehydrogenase activity was not statistically changed. In conclusion, the toluene application to skin in liver-damaged rat led to enhancement of liver injury that may be due to the accumulation of toluene metabolite in liver.

  • The present study was conducted to determine whether skin spread of Myrrha has an effect on the cell regeneration as well as wound healing following dermal scald burn injury, keratinocyte growth factor (KGF) level was analyzed immunologically in conjunction with the histological changes occurred in skin tissue. The KGF contents in Myrrha skin spread group, which shows cell regeneration ability in skin tissue after burn, increased after 5 hours. After 24 hours, 'the content of Myrrha skin spread group is noticeably higher than at 5 hours postburn. After 72 hours, KGF was decreased compared to at 24 hours postburn. Acceleration effect of KGF production in Myrrha skin spread group was high. Together with the result of histological changes, skin spread of Myrrha reduced protein degeneration and edema in dermis, and induced proliferation of epithelial cells. The data suggest that Myrrha has accelerate cell regeneration and wound healing in case of scald burn skin by spreading of paste.

  • Objectives : Cupping therapy has been used as various treatment methods in oriental medicine clinic for a long time. Specially, Cupping stimulation caused skin hyperpigmentation which has been used as diagnosis method for extravasated blood & inner organs functional disease. But it was difficult to quantitatively measure and analyze the interrelation between extravasated blood and skin hyperpigmentation. The aim of this study is to measure the acupoint's RGB and melanin change pattern by stimulating under fixed 80kPa negative pressure and to evaluate the extravasated blood. Methods : To evaluate extravasated blood, 10 acupoints (left/right BL13, BL15, BL18, BL20, BL23) were stimulated by treatment 80kPa negative pressure for 1 minute. And then we measured the acupoints' skin color change patterns using the color meter, followed by RGB analysis and melanin change pattern. Results and Conclusions : We could observe the correlation of the acupoints' skin color condition related with RGB change pattern. All acupoints' color change degree were different. Regardless of acupoints' color degree due to extravasated blood, we observed in common the fact that RGB values decreased after stimulation and steadily increased according to time. We observed that melanin index increased after stimulation and recovered before stimulation-condition after the lapse of time. In other words, we confirmed the correlation between raised color change degree and $L^*a^*$ index change pattern. Therefore we observed the possibility of charting the $L^*a^*$ index following extravasated blood.

  • In recent years, a miniature spectrometer has been extensively developed due to the combination of fiber optics and semiconductor detector arrays. This type of miniature spectrometer has advantages of low price and robustness because of the capability of mass production and no moving parts are required such as lenses, mirrors and scanning monochromator. In this study, for skin diagnostics, a portable near infrared (NIR) system has been developed using a LlGA microspectrometer, which is photo-diode arrays-type.(omitted)

  • The present study was conducted to determine whether skin spread of Myrrha and Tending Diancibo Pu (TDP) irradiation have a remarkable effect on the cell regeneration as well as wound healing following dermal scald burn injury. Burn injury was induced on dorsal surface $(TBSA\;15\~20\%)$ by scald burn in rats. Postburn concentration of serum protein was significantly decreased compared with sham-treated, double treatment with Myrrha and TDP was significantly increased the protein concentration compared with that of burn control. The content of keratinocyte growth factor (KGF) at 48 h is higher than that of at 24 h, and double treatment with Myrrha and TDP was the most effective to increase the production of KGF in all experimental groups. Morphologically, epithelial regeneration and dermal collagen synthesis by fibroblasts were accelerated in Myrrha and TDP treated group compared with bum control at same time postburn. At 48 h after burn, all dermal connective tissues are recovered to new collagen fibers in case of Myrrha and TDP double treated group. The data suggest that double treatment with skin spread of Myrrha and TDP radiation have a remarkable effect of to accelerate cell regeneration and wound healing in case of scald burn skin.

  • To evaluate the effect of occlusive skin on the activity of cutaneous oxygen free radical metabolizing enzymes in rats, the dorsal skin was covered with closed glass chamber shaped petri dish, 46 mm in diameter and 10 mm in height and sealed by an adhesive. Five day-occluded group showed more increased activity of xanthine oxidase (XO) than that of control, and the activity of five day-occluded group was higher than that of ten day-occluded group. The activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) were significantly higher in ten day-occluded group than in control or five day-occluded group. All the more, five day-occluded group showed the decreasing tendency of SOD and GPx activities compared to those of control. On the other hand, the cerrous perhydroxide deposits were observed in the intercellular space of the stratum basale in five day-occluded group under the electronic microscope using a cytochemistry method. Futhermore, the degree of cerrous perhydroxide reaction was lower in ten day-occluded group than in five day-occluded group. In conclusion, the increased XO activity and the decreased SOD and GPx activities are likely to responsible far the accumulation of $H_2O_2$ in five day-occluded group.

  • The present study was conducted to determine whether administration of heat extract of Lepidii Semen has an inhibitory effect on neutrophil-derived oxidative injury following dermal scald burn in rats. Acute lung injury was induced by scald burn (15% of TBSA) in rats. To identify acute edematous lung injury, protein concentrations and numbers of polymorphonuclear leukocytes were measured in bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) at 5 h after skin burn. In addition, the level of lung KC (neutrophil chemoattractant cytokine) and activity of lung myeloperoxidase (MPO) were measured, and histopathological changes were observed as well. Lung weight and concentration of BAL protein, the index of lung injury, were clearly increased at 5 h postburn compared with those of sham-operated group. Administration of heat extract of Lepidii Semen after scald burn inhibited the production of KC in lung tissue and decreased the activity of lung MPO related to infiltration of neutrophils. In histopathological changes in lung tissue, infiltration of inflammatory cells and pulmonary edema induced by skin burn were decreased by administration of heat extract of Lepidii Semen after scald burn. These results suggest that Lepidii Semen may be an effective medical stuff for acute lung injury induced by skin burn.

  • In this paper, we developed a temperature measurement system based on an infrared temperature imaging module for thermal safety verification of a plasma skin treatment device (PSTD). We tested a pilot product of the low-temperature PSTD using the system, and the temperature increase of each plasma torch was well-monitored in real-time. Additionally, through the approximation of the temperature increase of the plasma torches, a certain limitation of the plasma treatment time on skin was established with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) guideline. We determined an appropriate plasma treatment time ($T_{Safe}$ < 24 minutes) using the configured temperature measurement system. We believe that the temperature measurement system has a potential to be employed for testing thermal safety and suitability of various medical devices and industrial instruments.
