  • This study was attempted to observe the possibility of body fat distribution and fasting serum insulin as potential predictive factors for obesity and energy intake. Subjects participated in this study were seventeen pairs of upper body type women and lower body type women whose age weight BMI daily energy expenditure per body weight were equally matched, Waist to hip girth ratio(WHR) was measured as a criteria of body fat distribution. Comparison of eating behavior between upper body type and lower body type women did not show any significant differences in meal size meal duration and energy intake per minute While serum free fatty acid level was lower in upper body type women percentage of body fat and fasting serum insulin triglycerde level of upper body type women were statistically higher than those of lower body type women(p<0.05) Our data may indicate the possibility that sympathetic nervous system activity was suppressed in upper body type women which needs ti be examined in future studies. In addition since the upper body type women were dieting over the period of survey with the intention of weigh loss we can conclude that upper body type women had larger variabilities than lower body type women in terms of daily energy intake level.

  • Berchemia berchemiaefolia is a native a native rare plant which has been designating as the Natural Monument, No. 266, since 1980. The floristic composition, population structure and maintenance mechanism of the Berchemia berchemiaefolia forest were investigated in conjunction with the habitat consisted of the block field or screes. Through the present study, the authors found a new habitat of Berchemia berchemiaefolia in the northeastern slope on Mt. Kumdansan located at Hajeok-ri, Cheongcheon-myeon, Koesan-gun, chungbuk province. Gravels consisted of the block field belonged to granule, pebble and cobble as the range of grain size, $\Phi$=-1.5~6.6 values. The tree layer of Berchemia berchemiaefolia community was mainly composed of Quercus variabilis, Pinus densiflora and Q. serrata including Berchemia berchemiaefolia and of this community were similar to that of Q. variabilis. By the age distribution, it was considered that the community was a discontinued one as the pattern of distribution was a normal distribution type(N type). Phenological cycle including leafing, blooming and seed-bearing period between both sites of block field and valley or close canopy showed some differences. The seed production of Berchemia berchemiaefolia was 8, 655, 000 seeds/ha/year, but only 406, 000 seeds/ha/year of them were developed as saplings, and only 4 saplings were developed to mature trees.

  • Background: Pediatric deep neck infection can cause critical complications in that they are seldom able to verbalize symptoms or cooperate with physical examination. The objective of this study is to identify the clinical characteristics according to age. Material and Method: A retrospective study was performed on 26 cases with pediatric deep neck infection during 12 years. Patients were classified infancy group (1-7 yr, 19.2%), preschool age group (7-15 yr, 30.8%) and school age group (15 yr-, 50%). We analyzed the age, sex, sites of abscess, predisposing factors, symptoms and compared onset, hospital date, laboratory and outcomes at each group. Results: In pediatric patients with deep neck infection, the age distribution was 18 males (69.2%) and 8 females (30.8%), the mean age was 7.4 years. The most common infection site was the anterior cervical triangle and submandibular space (19.2%). The most commonly known associated preceding disease was upper viral infection (34.6%), but we could not find the preceding diseases in most of cases (50%). Neck swelling (69.2%) was the most frequent symptom. The mean age of patients who performed neck CT was 8.23 years and neck US was 2.75 years. The younger patients were preferred to perform the neck US than the neck CT (p=0.022). The mean time from disease onset to admission was 9 days in the infancy, 5.5 days in the preschool aged and 5 days in the school aged group. The surgical treatment was performed in 30.8% of school aged, 62.5% of preschool aged and 100% of infancy group. Surgical treatment was preferred to younger patients (p=0.026). Conclusion: Abscess sites, size, and antibiotics susceptibility and especially patient age should be carefully considered in treating pediatric deep neck infection.

  • A statistical analysis on the cardiothoracic ratio in insurance medicine was carried out for 5,200 insured persons who were medically examined including photofluorography of the chest at the Honam medical department, Dong Bang life insurance Company, Ltd from November, 1979 to August, 1984. The results were as follows: 1. The mean value of the cardiothoracic ratio in all of the insured was $44.2{\pm}4.3%$. The mean value of the cardiothoracic ratio was $43.1{\pm}4.1%$ in all males and $45.2{\pm}4.2%$ in all females, and the difference of the values between males and females showed statistical significance(P<0.001). In each age group, the mean value of the cardiothoracic ratios of female was higher than that of male without exception and the difference of the values between males and females showed statistical significance(P<0.001). The mean value of the cardiothoracic ratio showed gradual increase with age from the second to sixth decade in male(P<0.05 or 0.001 after fourth decade) and from the second to seventh decade in female(P<0.05 or 0.001 from the second to sixth decade). 2. Correlation between both sexes and among age groups relating to the cardiothoracic ratios of the insureds seen to be a physiological phenomenon of the cardiac size and should be considered on the rating of the cardiothoracic ratio. Based on the correlation above mentioned and an author's assumption that the incidence of normal and abnormal cardiothoracic ratios in each age group would show the same rate in male and female, author prepared a modified rating table from the existing table; in male group the existing rating table is used and in female group the ratings of 0, 30-50, 50-100 and 100-D are to calculate by the cardiothoracic ratio of 51%or under, 52-56%, 57-61% and 62% or over respectively in the age group below 39, by the cardiothoracic ratio of 52% or under, 53-57%, 58%-62% and 63% or over respectively in the age group of 40-49, by the cardiothoracic ratio of 53% or under, 54-58%, 59-63% and 64% or over respectively in the age group over 60. 3. The relative frequency distribution polygons of the cardiothoracic ratio of both sexes drawn in a pair on one coordinate plane revealed lying in juxtaposition each other horizontally and showed the shifting of females polygon to male's one toward the direction of greater value of the cardiothoracic ratio at a short distance which increased gradually with age. 4. The minimum cardiothoracic ratio was 31.2% and the maximum cardiothoracic ratio was 63.6% in all of the insured. 5. In each age group, no significant sex difference was found in the relative frequency distribution of ratings by the cardiothoracic ratios of 5,200 insureds by using the rating table modified by author, while significant sex difference was found by using the existing rating table.

  • The purposes of this study are to evaluate the Korean mandibular dental arch and classify the mandibular dental arch shape and size based on the incisal angle, canine angle, inter second molar width and height. In this study the mandibular study models were fabricated using irreversible hydrocolloid impression material from 225 volunteers with a mean age 23.62 (range 19-29). And the study models were measured with 3-dimensional measuring device and the mandibular dental arch was classified by means of K-means clustering method and visual inspection, then obtained data were analyzed with t-test for the statistical analysis. The results were as follows ; 1. The average canine height was 5.19mm(s.d. 1.17) in both sex, 5.34mm in male, and 4.95mnm in female. And the sexual difference was significant($0). 2. The average second molar height was 39.81mm(s.d. 2.44) in both sex, 40.19mm in male, and 39.21mm in female. And the sexual difference was significant($0). 3. The average inter-canine width was 27.16mm(s.d. 1.78) in both sex, 27.41mm in male, and 26.77mm in female. And the sexual difference was significant($0). 4. The average inter-first molar width was 46.93mm(s.d. 2.67) in both sex, 47.72mm in male, and 45.7mm in female. And the sexual difference was significant($0). 5. The inter-second molar width was average 56.09mm(s.d. 3.01) in both sex, 57.24mm in male, and 54.32mn in woma. And the sexual difference was significant($0). 6. The arch form was classified into three shapes based on the incisal and canine angle. V-shape showed $124.88^{\circ}$ of incisal angle and $141.64^{\circ}$ of canine angle, U-shape showed $152.76^{\circ}\;and\;125.35^{\circ}$, and O-shape showed $138.03^{\circ}\;and \;33.66^{\circ}$ respectively. Each shape distribution was that the V-shape was 14.2%, the U-Shape was 14.7%, and the O-shape was 71.1% of the 225 study models. 7. It was thought that the use of second molar width is more reasonable than height for classifying the dental arch size. The arch size was classified into four sizes based on the second molar width. Size 1 showed range of 42.24-48.23mm, size 2 showed 48.24-54.23mm, size 3 showed 54.24-60.23mm, and size 4 showed 60.24-66.23mm respectively. Each arch size distribution was that the size 1 was 1.3%, the size 2 was 27.1%, the size 3 was 63.6%, and the size 4 was 8.0% of the 225 study models.

  • PURPOSE. This retrospective study analyzed the distribution of the dental implants with regards to age and gender of the patients and type of indication for the implant therapy, as well as the location, dimension and type of the implants. MATERIALS AND METHODS. The data of demographics (age and gender), type of indication for implant therapy, anatomical location, dimensions (length and diameter) and type (bone and tissue level) of 1616 implants were recorded from patient charts between January 2000 and January 2010. Descriptive statistics were analyzed using a chi-squared test for demographic parameters, type of indication, tooth position, anatomical location, implant dimensions and type (${\alpha}$=.05). RESULTS. The patient pool comprised of 350 women and 266 men, with a mean age of $52.12{\pm}13.79$ years. The difference in n% of the implants of the age groups was statistically significant between the types of indications. The difference in the position of the implants was statistically significant between the n% of the implants of all age groups. Gender did not significantly vary, except that the diameter of the implants was significantly higher for the standard diameter implants in males. The difference between the implant positions was statistically significant when considered according to indication. The relationship between implant length and anatomical location was statistically significant. CONCLUSION. The indication for dental implant use is age dependent and the type and size of the implant seems to be strongly related to the location of the implant.

  • We clinically evaluated 222 cases of ventricular septal defect which we experienced at Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, Pusan National University Hospital between July 1981 and March 1988. These patients were occupied 46.2% of all congenital heart disease operated on its same period. Of 222 cases, 132 patients were male and 90 patients were female. Their age distribution ranged from 8 months to 34 years of age and their mean age was 10.3 years. Among these patients, 86 patients had associated cardiac anomalies, which were patent foramen ovale 43 cases[19.5%], Atrial septal defect 18 cases[8.1%], patent ductus arteriosus 8 cases[3.6%], aortic insufficiency 7 cases[3.2%], infundibular pulmonary stenosis 5 cases[2.3%] and etc. There was statistically significant correlationship between VSD size and Qp/Qs, Rp/Rs, Pp/Ps respectively. All cases were operated under cardiopulmonary bypass and 157 patients[70.7%] would be corrected through right atrial approach. 158 patients[71.2%] underwent closure of ventricular septal defect with primary closure and the remained patients[28.8%] with patch closure. In anatomical classification by Kirklin, type I constituted 23.4%, type II 73.4%, type III 0.5%, type I and type II 1.4%, and type II and type III 1.4%. Important postoperative EGG changes were noted in 57 cases[25.7%] and incomplete right bundle branch block was most common[12.6%]. 54 patients[24.3%] developed minor and major postoperative complications and 9 patients died of several complications and overall operative mortality was 4.1%.

  • Massive coastal sand dunes are distributed in Ui-island, Shinan-gun. The sand dunes in Ui-island is worth studying, in terms of preserving natural environment without anthropogenic impacts. In this study, we surveyed geomorphological processes of the sand dune based upon measuring of geometric properties, grain size analysis, and OSL(Optically Stimulated Luminescence) age dating. The sediments of the dune consist mainly of well sorted medium sand with about 250$\mu$m. Based on spatial distribution of sand dunes, we found that they are formed by northwest monsoon during winter, and sands are supplied from Seongchon area in northern UI-island. According to OSL age dating, the sand dunes were deposited from $0.07{\pm}0.01ka$ to $0.17{\pm}0.04ka$. This result shows that the transformation of the dune due to the sand movement by wind was active during the last 100-200 years. The aerial photograph indicates that the dimension of the largest sand dune has decreased since 1945. Further research is needed to get more detailed information on geomorphic changes of sand dunes in UI-island.

  • Korea has a long history from several thousand years ago. Specially stonecultural properties were used for the long period in Korea. Ancient tombs of prehistoric age, Sukgul-am (stone cave), Chumsung-dae (astronomical observatory)and stone statue of Buddha in the period of three dynasties were made of stone. There after the foundation stone, mortarstone, millstone, and other stone facilities at home have been also used for a long time. For the conservation of the cultural properties, the ecological distribution of lichens was investigated with the stone buildings around tombs and multistory stonepagodas.1. Yoo-nung (The tomb of Emperor Sungjong) : The stone buildings of granitearound tomb about 80 years old are clean and solid in quality, but they were covered in places with three kinds of lichens as the circle forms of pale-green and dark-gray colored thallus in crustose type. They were examined ecological distribution, identification and measurement of lobe size of lichens.2. Yoong-nung (The tomb of son of Emperor Yung-jong) : Granite buildings around tomb about 200 years old are also clean, moreover, they were also covered with the same kinds of crustose lichens in overlap.3. Yung-nung (The tomb of Emperor Sejong) : More than seven species of crustose, foliose and one species of fruticose lichens were growing on thegranite stone buildings built in about 500 years ago.4. Shilluk-sa multistory brick pagoda : It was built at the Koryo dynasty more than about 700 years. More than 5 species of crustose folios and two species of fruticose lichens were growing well on the granite stone at shade area. It was assumed that foliose lichens as dominant species with the respect of ecological aspect.5. Shilluk-sa multistory marble pagoda : This marble pagoda was built at the middle period of the Koryo dynasty as the same age of multistory brick pagoda. It was covered with black colored thallus such as crustose lichens. It is seemed that only crustose lichens on the stone were due to the drymarble stone. From the results described above, distribution of lichens showed that only crustose lichens on the stone from the short history (about 100-200 years) were grown with small size of circle form, stone buildings over 500 years were covered with crustose, folios and fruticose lichens, and the lichens distribution on the stonemore than 500 years appeared more foliose and fruticose than crustose type. Therefore, it is suggested that the succession of lichens on the stone buildings iscrustose$\rightarrow$foliose$\rightarrow$fruticose.Parmelia mexicana, Cladonia floerkeana, Ramalina yasudae identified are described in this paper and other unidentified species of saxicolous lichens will bedescribed later.
