  • In this paper several recent case studies of near surface geophysical applications in Greece are presented. The case studies are focused mostly in archeological site investigation, a field which is of high interest in Greece due to its reach historical heritage. The growing construction works in several parts of Greece as well as the increasing public interest in exploring and preserving cultural heritage lead to an increase of the application of nearsurface geophysics techniques as a preliminary investigation tool prior to engineering and archeological excavation works. Research efforts, presented in this work, are focused to extending and adapting standard nearsurface techniques in order to be made more effective for archaeological site investigation. The presented case studies involve not only standard field investigation procedures but also novel approaches such as the use of non-spike electrodes, efficient measuring and instrumentation strategies, unusual configurations and measurement environments. Overall it shown that efficient and state-of-art nearsurface geophysical techniques used for archaeological prospection purposes provide significant archaeological and structural information valuable for archeologists, engineers and conservation scientists.

  • The large generator rotor used in fossil power plant has the possibility of high 2X vibration due to asymmetric shaft stiffness. The generator rotor is machined into pole faces to reduce stiffness difference and then is tested through 2X vibration measurement when the balancing works are performed in the balancing shop. However, there are many cases of large difference values between 2X vibration in the balancing shop and 2X vibration in site. This paper presents a new method to estimate 2X vibration in site with more accuracy and applied for the retrofit of a fossil 400 MW class deteriorated generator. It shows that the new generator rotor is manufactured with a good 2X vibration characteristics and is operated in a low 2X vibration level although the generator rotor has high 2X vibration in the balancing shop.

  • Wind-speed has much effect on the dispersion of the radioactive effluents released into the atmosphere. Accurate measurement of low wind-speeds is very important for the realistic assessment of radiation exposure. The objective of this study is to analyze the effects of different calm conditions on the radiation exposure due to the normal operation of a nuclear facility at KAERI (Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute) site. When calm condition is changed from 0.5 m/sec to 0.21 m/sec, the effects on radiation exposure show a distinct difference.

  • Recently, The surface-wave method has widely been used for the site investigation due to the economic advantage and the improved reliability. The typical surface-wave methods currently available are SASW method, MASW method and CSW method. The CSW method has a potential of high-quality measurement, but its inherent problems limited its use to the special cases such as the compaction-quality control. The CSW method uses the steady-state harmonic vibration for the seismic source as in the steady-state Rayleigh-wave method, which is superior to the impact source used for other methods. This study proposed a new procedure to solve the inherent problems of the CSW method and to improve the reliability of the CSW measurements. To verify the validity of the proposed in this study, the SASW results were compared with the CSW results for the numerical simulation of the CSW testing. Also, the feasibility of the proposed method was verified using the field measurements at a geotechnical site.

  • This study is to reveal the periodical form of the 4 staged building sites with the size and the site composition of the master plan and floor plan of the Ungjindan (altar) from the Ungjindan excavation works in 2011. In order to project the research results aiming to the purpose of the study, the basic study was done with collecting data about shrine architecture for its architectural characteristics and case studies with ancestral facilities such as the Ak hae dok (national-level ancestral ritual to the big mountain, ocean and river) to understand the exact form of the site plan and architectural composition elements through the general information and excavation status. In addition, with the current situation and information from the excavation works the planned measurement scale will be calculated in inference for the size of the construction by stages and speculate the floor plan composition of the shrine architecture.

  • An efficient method utilizing the multi-stage improved differential evolution algorithm (MSIDEA) as an optimization solver is presented here to detect the multiple-damage of structural systems. Natural frequency changes of a structure are considered as a criterion for damage occurrence. The structural damage detection problem is first transmuted into a standard optimization problem dealing with continuous variables, and then the MSIDEA is utilized to solve the optimization problem for finding the site and severity of structural damage. In order to assess the performance of the proposed method for damage identification, an experimental study and two numerical examples with considering measurement noise are considered. All the results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method for accurately determining the site and severity of multiple-damage. Also, the performance of the MSIDEA for damage detection compared to the standard differential evolution algorithm (DEA) is confirmed by test examples.

  • $Moire\'{e}$ interferometry is a useful technique to assess the reliability of electronic package because $Moire\'{e}$ interferometry can measure the whole-field and real-time deformations. The shear strain of a small crack site is important to the reliability assessment of electronic package. The optical limitation of $Moire\'{e}$ interferometry makes ambiguous the shear strain of a small area. An atomic force microscope (AFM) is used to measure the profile of a micro site. High resolution of AFM can apply to the $Moire\'{e}$ technique. AFM $Moire\'{e}$ technique is useful to measure the shear strain of a small area. In this research, the method to accurately measure the deformation of a small area by using AFM $Moire\'{e}$ is proposed. A phase-shifting method is applied to improve the resolution of AFM $Moire\'{e}$.

  • Four valence of Chromium ion doped Yttrium Aluminum Garnet crystals were grown by Floating Zone and Czochralski methods. Changes of valence for Chromium (3+) ion to Chromium (4+) were achieved by substitution of Yttrium ion in dodecahedral site to Calcium and by substitution of Aluminum in octahedral site to Magnesium. Growth conditions for high quality of crystals were investigated. Grown crystals were cut and polished and then observed various types of defects. Characterizations by means of measurement of density and lattice parameter as a function of solidification fraction were performed. Results of Q-switching test using grown crystals were also reported.

  • Air pollution has been one of the severe problems in city area. Sulfur dioxide is the major pollutant among the air pollutants. And the lichen as a botanical indicator have been used to predict the air pollution level. This study was carried out to evaluate the air pollution level in Taejon area through the field survey which were checked lichen status and sulfur dioxide content in the atmosphere. The results were as follows 1. The average sulfur dioxide content in Taejon area was 0.031ppm. The comparison of measurement methods were regression equation, Y= 0.357$\times$+0.014 and correlation factor, r = 0.771. 2. The maximum point of the SO$_2$ level was site No. 2(Daehwa-Dong), 0.087 ppm and the minimum, site No. 8 (Doma 2-Dong), 0.009ppm. 3. Total amounts of sulfur dioxide yearly emitted from Taejon area by fuel consumption estimated 29829.6 tons. 4. The relationship between degree of lichen and sulfur dioxide contents were 0.000~0.020ppm : Zone No. 2 0.020~0.060ppm : Zone No. 1 over 0.060ppm : Zone No. 0

  • It is well known that on-site corona and various noises make severe problems on the PD(partial discharge) measurement. In this paper, for the improvement of the on-site PD measuring performance, the applicability of TF(Time-Frequency) map was investigated. For the purpose, PDs that can be generated from the defect in the power cables as well as corona discharges and ground noises were measured. And through the TF analysis for the measured data, we have tried to distinguish the real PDs, corona discharges and noises. As a result, it is confirmed that the data of PDs can be clustered themselves separable from other data such as corona and noises on the TF map.
