  • Most of earthquake-induced geotechnical hazards have been caused by the site effects relating to the amplification of ground motion, which are strongly influenced by the local geologic conditions such as soil thickness or bedrock depth and soil stiffness. In this study, an integrated GIS-based information system for geotechnical data, called geotechnical information system (GTIS), was constructed to establish a regional counterplan against earthquake-induced hazards at an urban area, Daejeon, which is represented as a hub of research and development in Korea. To build the GTIS for the area of interesting, pre-existing geotechnical data collections were performed across the extended area including the study area and a walk-over site survey was additionally carried out to acquire surface geo-knowledge data. For practical application of the GTIS used to estimate the site effects at the area of interesting, seismic microzoning map of the characteristic site period was created and presented as regional synthetic strategy for earthquake-induced hazards prediction. In addition, seismic zonation for site classification according to the spatial distribution of the site period was also performed to determine the site amplification coefficients for seismic design and seismic performance evaluation at any site in the study area. Based on the case study on seismic zonations at Daejeon, it was verified that the GIS-based GTIS was very useful for the regional prediction of seismic hazards and also the decision support for seismic hazard mitigation.

  • The conceptual site model (CSM) is used as a key tool to support decision making in risk based management of contaminated sites. In this work, CSM was applied in Jeonju Industrial Complex where site investigation for groundwater contamination was conducted. Site background information including facility types, physical conditions, contaminants spill history, receptor exposure, and ecological information were collected and cross-checked with tabulated checklist necessary for CSM application. The CSM for contaminants migration utilized DNAPL transport model and narrative CSMs were constructed for source to receptor pathway, ecological exposure route, and contaminants fate and transport in the form of a diagram or flowchart. The component and uncertainty of preliminary CSM were reviewed using the data gap analysis while taking into account the purpose of the survey and the site management stage at the time of the survey. Through this approach, the potential utility of CSM was demonstrated in the site management process, such as assessing site conditions and planning follow-up survey work.

  • In this study, an application was developed to reduce the work between labor and safety managers and to hire better workers when hiring workers. With the expected increase in foreign workers in the future, the number of illegal workers will also increase. As a result, accident and on-site management are becoming more difficult due to insufficient information collection of workers. Therefore, it was possible to secure on-site safety through an application that could collect accurate information and reduce the time of information exchange between safety managers and labor managers. In addition, the application was designed to help the safety manager identify the faithful workers more quickly when re-employment of the day laborers if many day laborers were assessed and filled out as they were. This anticipates the expected effect of shortening the construction period. The current application collected necessary information through an interview with the site manager. If the company collects more information needed in the field and has big data than it has collected necessary information so far, it will be highly competitive in the market as it can improve the completeness of applications by establishing opinions and reflecting information accordingly.

  • The objective of this study was to develop a GIS application model for analyzing site-specific suitability and investment efficiency of major plantation tree species. The model was designed to choose the best plantation species in terms of both potential stand growth and investment efficiency. Site index and IRR were used as the criteria for the potential of stand growth and investment efficiency, respectively. In the model, the conditions of forest stand management and site index are estimated as the function of site-environmental factors extracted by a series of spatial analyses of digital maps of FGIS. Based on site index values of tree species, the model screens out all the high potential tree species, in terms of stand growth, as the candidates for species selection and, then, calculates IRR for managing plantation forest stands for all the candidate tree species. The tree species of the highest IRR would be chosen as the one possessing the highest potential in terms of stand growth and profit. The model was applied to a case study for analyzing the site-specific suitability of 6 tree species in Taehwa University Forest of Seoul National University and the results are given in this paper.

  • Over 90% of the livestock excretions were treated and utilized by land application in Korea. Excessive application of the livestock manure as fertilizer has been issued as a main pollutant source in groundwater and watersheds. This study was seasonally conducted to identify the discharging characteristics with a certain artificial rainfall intensity (13 mm/hr) in terms of surface runoff, groundwater, and soil residue mass depending on the livestock manure types. A experimental field was constructed with three different sites that pig liquid fertilizer (LF), cattle manure (CM), and standard (S). The pig liquid fertilizer of 1,200 L and cattle manure of 900 kg were sprayed on each site ($50m^2$). The standard area was firmly prevented from any other contaminants. In the LF site, farmland discharging rate (FDR) was computed as 0.006 in CODcr, 0.015 in TN, and 0.029 in TP, resulted from the mass balance among total injection mass, surface runoff and groundwater. In the CM site, 29% of the nitrogen and phosphorus in each were discharged to the surface, and 64% and 58% of them were remained in the farmland. Surface runoff rate of the CM was higher than that of the LF, resulted from the solid form of the CM.

  • Vaccine is one of the best known and most successful applications of immunological theory to human health and it protects human life through inducing the immune response in systemic compartment. However, when we consider the fact that mucosal epithelium is exposed to diverse foreign materials including viruses, bacteria, and food antigens and protects body from entry of unwanted materials using layer of tightly joined epithelial cells, establishing the immunological barrier on the lining of mucosal surfaces is believed to be an effective strategy to protect body from unwanted antigens. Unfortunately, however, oral mucosal site, which is considered as the best target to induce mucosal immune response due to application convenience, is prone to induce immune tolerance rather than immune stimulation. Since intestinal epithelium is tightly organized, a prerequisite for successful mucosal vaccination is delivery of antigen to mucosal immune induction site including a complex system of highly specialized cells such as M cells. Consequently, development of efficient mucosal adjuvant capable of introducing antigens to mucosal immune induction site and overcome oral tolerance is an important subject in oral vaccine development. In this review, various approaches on the development of oral mucosal adjuvants being suggested for effective oral mucosal immune induction.

  • Currently, web applications are gaining in prevalence. In a web application, an input may not be appropriately validated, making the web application susceptible to cross-site scripting (XSS), which poses serious security problems for Internet users and websites to whom such trusted web pages belong. A taint inference is a type of information flow analysis technique that is useful in detecting XSS on the client side. However, in existing techniques, two current practical issues have yet to be handled properly. One is URL rewriting, which transforms a standard URL into a clearer and more manageable form. Another is HTML sanitization, which filters an input against blacklists or whitelists of HTML tags or attributes. In this paper, we make an analogy between the taint inference problem and the molecule sequence alignment problem in bioinformatics, and transfer two techniques related to the latter over to the former to solve the aforementioned yet-to-be-handled-properly practical issues. In particular, in our method, URL rewriting is addressed using local sequence alignment and HTML sanitization is modeled by introducing a removal gap penalty. Empirical results demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of our method.

  • Recent technological improvements have made abundant changes in construction industry. In specific, some technical applications, such as Building Information Modeling (BIM) opens up many possibilities. Some studies have articulated the use of BIM and its advantages in construction, but most of them are theoretical, not practical. This study is to provide an insight to such obstacles in BIM research. By investigating a real project that could utilize BIM in planning and construction phases, the authors try to investigate a possible outline of advantages in BIM implementation. The study area was set to a railway construction site in South Korea. The site covers a multiple railway tracks, stations, telecommunication facilities, infrastructure facilities, railway structures, and so numerous. In the site, the authors have identified 12 errors in 7 projects that could be prevented if BIM was utilized before the construction.
