  • Effects of particle size of alumina on densification behavior during liquid-phase sintering of alumina-talc system were investigated with emphasis on particle rearrangement process. In the case of using coarse alu-mina powder densiication of specimens was rapidly accelerated after formation of liquid phase due to easy particle rearrangement process with addition of talc and increase of sintering temperature. On the contrary when fine alumina powder was used premature densification of alumina matrix region formed before for-mation of liquid phase rigid skeleton structure and then it seemed to inhibit rearrangement process during crease of sintering temperature. As results the densification of specimens using coarse alumina powder was higher than that of the case of using fine one.

  • Pulsed Current Sintering (PCS) process possesses some problems that need to be resolved. We, therefore aims at understanding phenomena of PCS process by presenting some basic data on in situ sintering behavior of PCS. Special graphite mold equipped with thermo couple and electrodes were designed to measure the temperature, electric current and voltage inside the powder during PCS process. We apply three types of raw materials, especially for ZnO as semiconductor, $Al_2O_3$ as non-conductor and WC as good conductor. The electric current and voltage were measured for each powder during PCS process. In addition, their electric resistance properties were calculated.

  • In this study, the WC-10 wt.%Co nanopowders doped by grain growth inhibiter were produced by three different methods based on the spray conversion process. Agglomerated powders with homeogenous distribution of alloying elements and with internal particles of about 100-200 nm in diameter were synthesized. The microstructural changes and sintering behavior of hardmetal compacts were compared with doping method and sintering conditions. The microstructure of hardmetals was very sensitive to doping methods of inhibitor. Nanostructured WC-Co hardmetal powder compacts containing TaC/VC doped by chemical method instead of ball-milling shown superior sintering densification, and the microstructure maintained ultrafine scale with rounded WC particles.

  • To check the possibility for microwave sintering of MLCC(multi layer ceramic capacitor) the tape cast-ed BaTiO3 thick films in zirconia insulation box were sintered by the domestic microwave oven. Microwave sintered samples had higher density lower porosity than coventionally sintered ones. but they didn't show Z5U electrical properties due to short sintering time about 15 minutes.

  • Partially stabilized alpha-sialon composition (X=0.1) powder was hot-pressed at 1800~200$0^{\circ}C$ for 0~90 min with 30 MPa. Sintering behavior, phase changes and mechanical properties for the specimens were studied. As sintering temperature was raised from 1800 to 190$0^{\circ}C$, the relative density tended to increase and reached 99% of theoretical at 190$0^{\circ}C$. However the amount of alpha-sialon decreased because alpha-sialon transformed to beta-Si3N4 and yttrium rich silicate glass. In the case of hot-pressing at 190$0^{\circ}C$ for various times, densification increased with sintering time and full densification above 99% of theoretical was attained by 30 min. The amount of alpha-sialon decreased with sintering time. The maximum strength of 825 MPa was obtained by hot-pressing at 190$0^{\circ}C$ for 60 min.

  • The sintering behavior of cordierite powders synthesized using a sol-gel method of metal alkoxides Si(OC2H5)4, Al(OC3H71)3 and Mg(OC2H5)2 was investigated. Densification of the powder compacts fabricated using the precursor powders calcined at 900$^{\circ}C$ for 2hrs was improved over the sintering temperature range of 800 to 980$^{\circ}C$. The powder compacts, fabricated using the calcined precursor powders and sintered at 1300$^{\circ}C$ for 2hrs, showed relative density of 97-98%, 3-point bending strength of 120-140Mpa, KIC of 2.4-3.7 Mpam1/2, and thermal expansion coefficient of 1.48-1.66${\times}$10-6/$^{\circ}C$.

  • The nitriding and post-sintering behavior of silicon powder compact containing sintering additives of 2.3 wt% and 7 wt% were investigated in this study. Regardless of the liquid phase content, elongated large grains of a typical morphology evolved in the post-sintered specimens. Phase analysis revealed a complete phase transformation into ${\beta}-Si_3N_4$ in both porous systems. Oxynitride second phases (mellilite) precipitated in the latter, while those were free in the former containing less amount of liquid phase. The post-sintering condition that yielded a favorable microstructure for a filter application was achieved when the specimens were soaked at $1800^{\circ}C$ for 2 h. It was found that the thermal conductivity of porous $Si_3N_4$ ceramics is dominated by the porosity more than this factor is influenced by the addition of $Al_2O_3$.

  • Organic binders are usually pre-mixed with ceramic powders to enhance the formability during the shape forming process. These binders, however, must be eliminated before sintering in order to avoid pore formation and unusual grain growth during sintering. The present work was performed to investigate the effects of residual binder on grain growth behavior during sintering of $Pb(Mg_{1/3}Nb_{2/3})O_3-PbTiO_3$ piezoelectric ceramics. The microstructures of sintered samples were examined for various thermal processes and atmosphere at debinding. Addition of binder seems to promote abnormal grain growth especially in incompletely debinded regions and to make the grain shape change from corner-rounded to faceted.

  • The present study investigates the behavior of the sintering and hardness of stainless steel samples reinforced with NbC and TaC. Matrixes of pure stainless steel were compacted with addition of up to 3% wt NbC or TaC in a cylindrical die of steel $(\phi\;=\;5,0\;mm)$ at 700 MPa and sintered in an electrical resistance furnace under argon atmosphere. The sintered samples were characterized by density and hardness measurement, optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The preliminary results show that the size and distribution of carbides influence in the sintering and hardness of the sintered samples.

  • The effect of ball milling on the pressureless sintering of MoSi$_2$ was investigated. Ball milling was conducted at 70 rpm for 72 hours using different balls and vessels: one used tungsten carbide balls in a plastic vessel(referred as B-powder) and the other stainless steel ball in a stainless steel vessel(referred as C- powder). The powder was compacted with 173MPa and subsequently sintered at the temperature range of 1150 $^{\circ}C$ and 1450 $^{\circ}C$ in H$_2$, atmosphere. Sintered density was measured and scanning electron micrograph was observed. Over 90% of the theoretical density was attained at 1250 $^{\circ}C$ within 10 minutes for C-powders, while the similar densification required a sintering temperature of 1450 $^{\circ}C$ for B-powders. Such a difference in sinterability between B and C-powders was discussed in terms of the effect of particle size reduction and activated sintering caused by Ni and/or Fe introduced during ball milling.
