  • During the last decade there have been many studies on the new ceramics especially engineering ceramics. Sintered silicon carbide is one of the main materials in engineering ceramics. This study shows the effects of surface treatment and microstructure especially the abnormal grain growth on the strength of sintered SiC. Surface of sintered SiC and treated with 400, 800 and 1200 grit diamond wheel. Grain growth is introduced by increasing the sintering times at 205$0^{\circ}C$. The $\beta$longrightarrow$\alpha$ transformation occurs during the sintering of $\beta$-starting materials and is often accompanied by abnormal grain growth. The overall strength distribution are estimated using the Weibull statistics. The results show that the strength of sintered SiC is limited by extrinsic surface flaws in normal-sintered specimens. And it is sound that the finer the surface finishing and the grain size the higher the strength results. But the strength of abnormal sintering specimens is limited by the abnormally-grown large tabular grains. The Weibull modulus increases with the decreasing grain size and the decreasing grit size of grinding.

  • The effect of the processing parameters on the sintered density and strength of silica-bonded SiC (SBSC) ceramics was investigated for three types of batches with different particle sizes. The SBSC ceramics were fabricated by an oxidation-bonding process. The process involves the sintering of powder compacts in air so that the SiC particles bond to each other by oxidation-derived $SiO_2$ glass or cristobalite. A finding of this study was that a higher flexural strength was obtained when the starting powder was smaller. When a ${\sim}0.3_{-{\mu}m}$ SiC powder was used as a starting powder, a high strength of $257{\pm}42\;MPa$ was achieved at a relative density of ${\sim}80%$.

  • Nano-structured tungsten carbide compacts with cobalt matrices (WC-Co) offer new opportunities for achieving superior hardness and toughness combinations. A unified modeling and simulation tool has been developed to produce maps of sintering pathways from nanocrystalline WC powder to sintered nano-structured WC-Co compacts. This tool includes (1) die compaction, (2) grain growth, (3) densification, (4) sensitivity analysis, and (5) optimization. All material parameters were obtained by curve fitting based on results with two WC-Co powders. Critical processing parameters are determined based on sensitivity analysis and are optimized to minimize grain size with high density.

  • A high temperature dilatometer attached to a graphite furnace is built and used to study the sintering behavior of $B_4C$. Pristine and carbon doped $B_4C$ compacts are sintered at various soaking temperatures and their shrinkage profiles are detected simultaneously using the dilatometer. Carbon additions enhance the sinterability of $B_4C$ with sintering to more than 97% of the theoretical density, while pristine $B_4C$ compacts could not be sintered above 91% due to particle coarsening. The shrinkage profiles of $B_4C$ reveal that the effect of carbon on the sinterability of $B_4C$ can be seen mostly below $1950^{\circ}C$. The high temperature dilatometer delivers very useful information which is impossible to obtain with conventional furnaces.

  • Recently, the necessity of designing and applying tool materials that perform machining of difficult-to-cut materials in a cryogenic treatment where demand is increasing. The objective of this study is to evaluate the performance of cryogenically treated WC-5 wt% NbC hard materials fabricated by a pulsed current activated sintering process. The densely consolidated specimens are cryogenically exposed to liquid nitrogen for 6, 12, and 24 h. All cryogenically treated samples exhibit compressive stress in the sintered body compared with the untreated sample. Furthermore, a change in the lattice constant leads to compressive stress in the specimens, which improves their mechanical performance. The cryogenically treated samples exhibit significant improvement in mechanical properties, with a 10.5 % increase in Vickers hardness and a 60 % decrease in the rupture strength compared with the untreated samples. However, deep cryogenic treatment of over 24 h deteriorates the mechanical properties indicating that excessive treatment causes tensile stress in the specimens. Therefore, the cryogenic treatment time should be controlled precisely to obtain mechanically enhanced hard materials.

  • Silicon carbide powder was prepared from mixtures of Sangdong silica sand and carbon black by SHS (Self propagating High temperature Synthesis) method which utilizes magnesiothermic reduction of silica. In the powder preparation process, the reacted powder was leached by chloric acid to remove the magnesium oxide and was subsequently roasted to remove free carbon. The impurities were mostly eliminated by hot acid treatment. The resultant SiC powder showed the mean particle size of 0.22 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and the specific surface area of $66.55 m^2/g$. The SiC powder was mixed with 1 wt% of boron and of carbon to increase densification rate. The mixed powder was pressed and sintered pressurelessly at $2100^{\circ}C$ for 30 min in argon gas. The sintered body showed the hardness of $2550 kg{\cdot}f/mm^2$ and the fracture toughness, KIC of $3.47 MN/m^{3/2}$.

  • Conventional high-speed steels, which are carbide decentralized materials, are used for sliding parts, but they lack sufficient hardness for some applications. Improvement of surface hardness is possible for high-Cr steels through nitriding. However, nitriding P/M parts is not advisable without sealing the porosity before treatment, as they will become brittle. However, it is difficult to seal the pores with steam treatment, because high-Cr steel has a passive film on the surface. Controlling nitriding by decreasing the amount of oxygen on the surface to be nitrided, and grinding to decrease the porosity of the surface, makes it possible to produce a material that has reasonable and sufficient hardness in the required areas.

  • We have studied the effect of C/Ti atomic ratio of TiCx (x=0.5, 0.75 and 1.0) raw powder on the properties of the Ti-Mo-WTiC sintered hard alloy. The decrease of C/Ti atomic ratio accelerated the densification in the sintering process. The hardness was remarkably improved up to 1350HV with decreasing the C/Ti atomic ratio because of increase of TiCx phase volume content and its fine dispersion. From the results of electro-chemical tests in acid and 3% NaCl solutions, it was obvious that every alloy had excellent corrosion resistance, which meant about 200 times better than that of WC-Co cemented carbide.

  • Porous mullite-bonded SiC (MBSC) ceramics were fabricated at temperatures ranging from 1400 to $1500^{\circ}C$ for 2 h using silicon carbide (SiC), alumina ($Al_2O_3$), strontium oxide (SrO), and poly (methyl methacrylate-coethylene glycol dimethacrylate) (PMMA) microbeads. The effect of template content on porosity, pore morphology, and flexural strength were investigated. The porosity increased with increasing the template content at the same sintering temperature. The flexural strength showed maximum after sintering at $1450^{\circ}C$/2 h for all specimens due to small pores and dense strut. By controlling the template content and sintering temperature, it was possible to produce porous MBSC ceramics with porosities ranging from 30% to 54%. A maximum flexural strength of ~51MPa was obtained at 30% porosity when no template were used and specimens sintered at $1450^{\circ}C$/2 h.

  • Silicon carbide (SiC) has been used for many engineering applications because of their high strength at high temperatures and high resistances to chemical degradation. SiC is very useful especially for a glass lens mold whose components demanded to the machining with good surface finish and low surface damage. The performance and reliability of optical components are strongly influenced by the surface damage of SiC during grinding process. Therefore, the severe process condition optimization shall be necessary for the highly qualified SiC glass lens mold. Usually the major form of damage in grinding of SiC is a crack occurs at surface and subsurface. The energy introduced in the layers close to the surface leads to the formation of these cracks. The experimental studies have been carried out to get optimum conditions for grinding of silicon carbide. To get the required qualified surface finish in grinding of SiC, the selection of type of the wheel is also important. Grinding processes of sintered SiC work-pieces is carried out with varying wheel type, depth of cut and feed using diamond wheel. The machining result of the surface roughness and the number of flaws, have been analyzed by use of surface profilers and SEM.
