  • Carbohydrates serve three different principal functions in the metabolism of plants. They are the primary products of energy fixation, they are important transport metabolites, and they are deposited as structural or storage compounds. Modification of carbohydrate metabolism therefore covers approaches to modify yield, to change sink/source relationships and thereby alter the ratio of harvestable material, and to improve the quality of crop plants. The scope of this article is to summarize research done at the Max-Planck-Institute related to the first two fields and to present in some detail what we learned, when we established a new carbohydrate storage form in potato.

  • The derived expressions and computations of the system reliability in the consecutive k out of n failure structure with sink-source pole are discussed and a decisive lower and upper bounds as well as exact system reliability are presented in this paper. Good bounds of the system reliability can be easily computed and are illustrated in the numerical example.

  • Geographic routing has been considered as an efficient, simple, and scalable routing protocol for wireless sensor networks since it exploits pure local location information instead of global topology information to route data packets. Geographic routing requires the sources nodes to be aware of the location of sinks. Most existing geographic routing protocols merely assume that source nodes are aware of the locations of sinks. How can source nodes get the locations of sinks was not addressed in detail. In this paper, we propose a sink location service via circle path for geographic routing in wireless sensor networks. In this scheme, a sink sends a Sink Location Announcement (SLA) message along a circle path, and a source node sends a Sink Location Query (SLQ) message along a straight path that certainly passes through the circle path. By this way we can guarantee the SLQ path and SLA path have at least one crossing point. The node located on the crossing point of the two paths informs the source node the sink location. This procedure can correctly work in any irregular profile sensor networks such as network that has holes or irregular shape by some rules. Simulation results show that our protocol is superior to other protocols in terms of energy consumption and control overhead.

  • The problem of Benard double diffusive Marangoni convection is investigated in a horizontally infinite composite layer system consisting of a two component fluid layer above a porous layer saturated with the same fluid, using Darcy-Brinkman model with constant heat sources/sink in both the layers. The lower boundary of the porous region is rigid and upper boundary of the fluid region is free with Marangoni effects. The system of ordinary differential equations obtained after normal mode analysis is solved in closed form for the eigenvalue, thermal Marangoni number for two types of thermal boundary combinations, Type (I) Adiabatic-Adiabatic and Type (II) Adiabatic -Isothermal. The corresponding two thermal Marangoni numbers are obtained and the essence of the different parameters on non-Darcy-Benard double diffusive Marangoni convection are investigated in detail.

  • The roles of atmospheric heating formation and distribution on the global circulation are of utmost importance, and those are directly related to not only spatial but also temporal characteristics of monsoon system. In this study, before we clarify the characteristics of apparent heat source <$Q_1$> and moisture sink <$Q_2$>, comparisons of three reanalysis datasets (NCEP2, ERA-Interim, and JRA-55) in its global or regional patterns are performed to clearly evaluate differences among datasets. Considering inter-hemispheric difference of global monsoon regions, seasonal means of June-July-August and December-January-February, which is summer (winter) and winter (summer) in the Northern (Southern) Hemisphere are employed respectively. Here we show the characteristics of eight different regional monsoon regions and find contributions of <$Q_2$> to <$Q_1$> for the regional monsoon regions. Each term in apparent heat source and moisture sink is shown to come from the ERA-Interim dataset, since the ERA-Interim could be representative of three datasets. The NCEP2 data has a different characteristic in the ratio of <$Q_2$> and <$Q_1$> because it overestimates <$Q_1$> compared to the other two different datasets. The Australia monsoon has been performing better over time, while some regional monsoons (South America, North America, and North Africa) have been showing increasing data inconsistency. In addition, the three reanalysis datasets are getting different marching with time, in particular since the early 2000s over South America, North America, and North Africa monsoon regions. The recent inconsistency among the three datasets that may be associated with the global warming hiatus remains unexplored.

  • The relationship between source leaf position and photo-assimilate translocation and distribution was characterized for tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill) grown in the greenhouse. Three different positions of source leaf on the stem (first node above or below the first fruit cluster and $5^{th}$ node above the first fruit cluster) were tested for their influence on $^{14}CO_2$ assimilation and transfer to different parts of the plant. The leaves at the $5^{th}$ node above the first fruit cluster transferred the highest (57%) proportion of $C^{14}$ to other plant parts, followed by leaves home on the first node below the first fruit cluster (50%), and the first node above the first fruit cluster (39%). In all treatments, fruits served as the strongest sink for $C^{14}$, followed by stem, leaf, and root tissues. The leaf home on the $5^{th}$ node above the first fruit cluster transferred the largest amount of $C^{14}$ to the second fruit cluster.

  • Wireless sensor networks have many sensor nodes which response sudden events in a sensor fields. Some efficient routing protocol is required in a sensor networks with mobile sink node. A data-path template is offered for the data announcement and data request from source node and sink node respectively. Sensed data are transferred from source node to sink node using short-distance calculation. Typical protocols for the wireless networks with mobile sink are TTDD(Two-Tier Data Dissemination) and CBPER(Cluster-Based Power-Efficient Routing). The porposed SPDR(Short-Path Data Routing) protocol in this paper shows more improved energy efficiencies from the result of simulations than the typical protocols.
