A new quadratic response surface modeling method is presented. In this method, the incomplete small composite design (ISCD) is newly proposed to .educe the number of experimental runs than that of the SCD. Unlike the SCD, the proposed ISCD always gives a unique design assessed on the number of factors, although it may induce the rank-deficiency in the normal equation. Thus, the singular value decomposition (SVD) is employed to solve the normal equation. Then, the duality theory is used to newly develop the conservative least squares fitting (CONFIT) method. This can directly control the ever- or the under-estimation behavior of the approximate functions. Finally, the performance of CONFIT is numerically shown by comparing its'conservativeness with that of conventional fitting method. Also, optimizing one practical design problem numerically shows the effectiveness of the sequential approximate optimization (SAO) combined with the proposed ISCD and CONFIT.

The stress singularity of a sharp wedge contacting a half plane can be avoided by changing the wedge shape. Shape optimization is accomplished with the geometric strain method (GSM), an optimality criterion method. Several numerical examples are provided for different materials in the wedge and half plane to avoid stress singularity neal the sharp corner of the wedge. Optimum wedge shapes are obtained and critical corner angles are compared with the angles from analytical contact mechanics. Numerical results are well matched to analytical and experimental results. It is shown that shape optimization by the geometric strain method is a useful tool to reshape the wedge and to avoid a stress singulatiry. The method applies to more general geometries where the singular behavior would be difficult to avoid by classical means.

The present paper will give some results of the fatigue behavior of typical axi-symmetric forward extrusion die. The extrusion process is analyzed by rigid-plastic FEM and the deformation analysis of extrusion die is conducted by elasto-plastic FEM. To approach the crack problem LEFM (Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics) is introduced. Using special element in order to conside the sigularity of stress/ strain in the vicinity of the crack tip, stress intensity factor and the effective stress intensity factor is calculated. Applying proper fatigue crack propagation criterion such as Paris/Erdogan fatigue law and maximum principal criterion to these data, then, the angle and the direction of fatigue crack propagation is simulated. In result, it is proved that the simulated fatigue crack propagates in the zigzag path along the radial direction and fatigue life of the extrusion die is evaluated by using the computed crack growth rate.

The radiation problem for an oscillating cylinder advancing under the free surface with a constant horizontal velocity is studied using the Green integral equation in the frequency domain. The Green function expressed in terms of the complex exponential, is derived using the damped free surface condition. Special attention is given to the behavior of the numerical solution in the vicinity of the critical Brard number ${\gamma}_c=\omega{\cdot}u/g=0.25$ where $\omega$ is the circular frequency of encounter, u the advancing speed and g the gravitational acceleration. It is shown that the solution is finite in the vicinity of ${\gamma}_c$ although the Green function becomes singular at ${\gamma}_c$. It is also shown that the computed hydrodynamic coefficients agree well with those obtained from the solution of the same problem formulated in the time domain.

Generally, a structural system with large inextensional deformations, or in other words, non-strained deformation is called as 'Unstable Structure', Truss-linked structures, cable structures, membrane structures and movable structures as foldable space structures etc, are included in this category. In this paper, a dynamic analysis method for unstable structural systems is presented. Governing equations for dynamic analysis of unstable truss structures with inextensional displacements are derived. Because of singularity of inverse matrixin in practical analysis of unstable structure, the generalized inverse matrix is Introduced to resolve the singular problem. Also, the RREF technique is used to get the inextensional displacement mode. Two unstable truss structures are analyzed by using presented method. Damping is not considered. From the given results, it is known that proposed method is useful to figure out the dynamic behavior of unstable truss structures.
In this study, Pasternak foundation model, which is a two parameter foundation model, is used to analyze the behavior of laterally loaded beams embedded in semi-infinite media. Total potential energy variation of the system is written to formulate the problem that yielded the required field equations and the boundary conditions. Shear force discontinuities are exposed within the boundary conditions by variational method and are validated by photo elastic experiments. Exact solution of the deflection of the beam is obtained. Both foundation parameters are obtained by self calibration for this particular problem and loading type in this study. It is shown that, like the first parameter k, the second foundation parameter G also depends not only on the material type but also on the geometry and the loading type of the system. On the other hand, surface deflection of the semi infinite media under singular loading is obtained and another method is proposed to determine the foundation parameters using the solution of this problem.

This paper deals with the stress singularity induced at the interface corner between the viscoelastic thin film and the rigid substrate subjected to the combined influence of temperature change and moisture absorption. A boundary element analysis is employed to investigate the behavior of interface stresses. The film is assumed to be thermorheologically simple. It is further assumed that moisture effects are analogous to thermal effects. Numerical results are presented for a given viscoelastic model, indicating the singular residual stresses induced during cooling down from the curing temperature, and how they can be altered by subsequent moisture absorption at room temperature.
In this paper an attempt is made to understand the voltage stability when the power system networks are represented by the differential-algebraic equations (DAEs) form. The problem is analyzed by interpreting the shape of constraint manifold, based on the singular perturbation model. The global picture or constraint manifold is given to show how the local shape or constraint manifold can be used to guess for the system behavior. The gradient analysis is used systematically to obtain a local shape or the constraint manifold.

The buckling of an orthotropic layer bonded to an orthotropic half-space with an interface crack subjected to compressive load under plane strain is analyzed. General solution to the stability equations describing the buckling behavior of both the layer and the half-space is expressed in terms of displacement functions. The displacement functions are represented by the solution of Cauchy-type singular integral equations, which are numerically solved. Numerical results of the critical buckling loads are presented fur various geometric parameters and material properties of both the layer and half-space.

The study on the mechanical behavior of a spot-welded specimen is largely divided into the quasi-static overload failure analysis and the fatigue failure prediction. The main issue in an overload analysis is to examine the critical loads, thereby providing a generalized overload failure criterion. As the welding spot forms a singular geometry of an external crack type, fatigue failure of spot-welded specimens can be evaluated by means of a fracture parameter. In this study, we first present the limit loads of 4 representative types of single spot-welded specimens in terms of the base metal yield strength and specimen geometries. Recasting the load vs. fatigue life relationships experimentally, obtained here, we then predict the fatigue life of spot-weld specimens with a single parameter denoted the equivalent stress intensity factor. This crack driving parameter is demonstrated to successfully describe the effects of specimen geometry and loading type in a comprehensive manner. The suggested fatigue life formula for a single spot weld can play a key, role in the design and assessment of spot-welded panel structures, in that the fatigue strength of multi-spots is eventually determined by the fatigue strength of each single spot.
