  • A fish-bone type bridge is vulnerable to the torsional behavior due to the single girder system with planar zigzag conformation. The fixed connecting area between the girder and pier is the special weak point because the torsional load creates excessive stress concentration. Therefore, the method to reduce the stress concentration is required. In this study, the reduction efficiency of various reinforcing types to reduce the excessive stress occurring at the connecting area is evaluated by using numerical analyses.

  • Seismic resisting self-centering bridge piers with high energy dissipation and negligible residual displacement after an earthquake event are focus topics of current structural engineering. The energy dissipation components of typical bridge piers are often relatively single; and exhibit a certain level of damage under earthquakes, leading to large residual displacements and low cumulative energy dissipation. In this paper, a novel socket self-centering bridge pier with a hybrid energy dissipation system is proposed. The seismic resilience of bridge piers can be improved through the rational design of annular grooves and rubber cushions. The seismic response was evaluated through the finite element method. The effects of rubber cushion thickness, annular groove depth, axial compression ratio, and lateral strength contribution ratio of rubber cushion on the seismic behavior of bridge piers are systematically studied. The results show that the annular groove depth has the greatest influence on the seismic performance of the bridge pier. Especially, the lateral strength contribution ratio of the rubber cushion mainly depends on the depth of the annular groove. The axial compression ratio has a significant effect on the ultimate bearing capacity. Finally, the seismic design method is proposed according to the influence of the above research parameters on the seismic performance of bridge piers, and the method is validated by an example. It is suggested that the range of lateral strength contribution ratio of rubber cushion is 0.028 ~ 0.053.

  • A comprehensive experimental program of cyclic tests on 1:3-scale models of bridge piers is going to be carried out at the Laboratory of Structures and Materials of the University of Basilicata. The testing models include eight RC single shaft piers with hollow circular cross section. Four piers have been realised using corroded steel rebars. In this paper, the results of preliminary numerical simulation analyses of the cyclic behaviour of the piers, carried out with Opensees using fiber-based models, are presented. Pull-out and lap-splice effects of steel rebars have been taken into account in the numerical analyses. First, the experimental specimens and the test set up are presented. Next, the results of the numerical analyses are discussed. In the numerical analyses, different configurations and levels of corrosion have been considered. The effective stiffness and equivalent damping of the piers is reported as a function of pier ductility and pier drift.

  • The aim of this paper is to open up a relatively new type in bridge engineering by introducing plan and design of extradosed bridge which is implemented in Sungnam-Janghowon T/K project. The topic encompasses parametric study including the behavior of the bridge relevant to the cable layout, the distance from pier table to the first cable's location, the height of pylon, the stiffness of cross section and wind vibration to ascertain sectional type of bridge and span length. For the purpose of the knowledge base presented here, the important feature of design is recommended such as modeling method, camber control, finite element analysis and heat hydration of pier table. We can verify the issue related to the characteristics of extradosed bridge as a result of study and design endeavor.

  • The necessities of development of foundation having minimized occupying area and construction time are required for overpass in the downtown area by which bimodal tram will pass a crossway. We are studying a single column drilled pier foundation which is continuous from pier to pile foundation. Due to the increased resisting moment by reinforced steel which is ranged from the upper part of pile to lower part of column above ground, it can be possible to make a smaller pile-section and lessen the bar reinforcing. And for the excavation work is possible with smaller equipment, this foundation has a improved constructability and economical efficiency. This foundation needs smaller amount of concrete and has a small self-weight. It has an effect on improving resistance against earthquake due to improved ductility in addition to improved rigidity by interaction between concrete and steel.

  • Recently, there are much concerns about new and innovative transverse materials which could be used instead of conventional transverse steel in reinforced concrete bridge piers. FRP materials could be substituted for conventional transverse steel because of their sufficient strength, light weight, easy fabrication, and useful applicability to any shapes of pier sections, such as rectangular or circular sections. The objective of this research is to evaluate the seismic performance of reinforced concrete bridge pier specimens with FRP transverse reinforcement by means of the Quasi-Static test. In the first task, test columns were made using FRP rope, but these specimens appeared to fail at low displacement ductility levels due to insufficient confinement of strand extension itself. Therefore, the second task was to evaluate the seismic performance of test specimens transversely confined with FRP band. Although FRP banded specimens showed lower seismic performance than the specimen with spiral reinforcing steel, it satisfied with the response modification factor, 3, required for the single column of Korea bridge roadway design code. It was concluded that FRP band could be efficiently substituted for conventional reinforcing steel.

  • A multi-span bridge model that is fixed in longitudinal direction at a single pier can be very vulnerable to the earthquake ground motion in longitudinal direction. If the seismic load exceeds the capacity of the pier, it can be severely damaged. However, such incident can be prevented if piers of movable support share the seismic load as setting up seismic load transmitting device. This study is performed to investigate seismic performance of continuous bridge model with seismic load transmitting devices which is proposed newly. It is found that continuous bridge model system with device is more effective about displacement control and seismic performance.

  • This study analyzed the general scour characteristics around group pile foundations through laboratory experiments. The experiments were performed for the pile groups consisting of 4, 9, 15 and 35 piles to investigate the effects of pile number, mean velocity and the angle of attack on the scour hole shape, and the magnitude and the position of maximum scour depth. Results reveal that the maximum scour depth for 4 and 9 piles have almost same values with single pier case regardless of approach velocity. The scour depth for 15 and 35 piles, however, increases as the mean velocity increases and reaches up to 2.2 times of maximum scour depth for single pier case. As the number of piles increase, the single scour holes are superposed and the overall scour hole turned out to be rectangular shape. The experimental results for the case of 35 piles indicate that the scour depth has the maximum value at angle of attack of 35 degree and that the main scour hole is formed in diagonal direction.

  • Response of reinforced concrete (RC) column-bent piers subjected to bidirectional seismic loadings was experimentally investigated. RC column-bent piers represent one of the most popular shapes of piers used in Korea highway bridges. Four column-bent piers were constructed in 400 mm diameter and 2,000 mm height. Each pier has two circular supporting columns. These piers were tested under bidirectional lateral load reversals with an axial load of $0.1f_{ck}A_g$. The test parameters included : different transverse reinforcement contents and lap-spliced longitudinal reinforcing steels. Test results indicate that the lap splice of longitudinal reinforcing steels have significantly influenced on hysteretic response of column-bent piers similar to previous test results for single columns with corresponding test parameters. Column capacity was changed with the level of transverse confinement. From the comparison of test result for single column under unidirectional loading, the damage of single column was concentrated on lower plastic hinge region but the damage of column-bent piers was scattered to upper and lower plastic hinge region.

  • Automatic container code recognition from a captured image is used for tracking and monitoring containers, but often fails when the code is not captured clearly. In this paper, we increase the accuracy of container code recognition using multiple views. A character-level integration method combines recognized codes from different single views to generate a new code. A decision-level integration selects the most probable results from the codes from single views and the new integrated code. The experiment confirmed that the proposed integration works successfully. The recognition from single views achieved an accuracy of around 70% for the test images collected on a working pier, whereas the proposed integration method showed an accuracy of 96%.
