  • An experimental investigation of the effect of composite patching repair was conducted to characterize the fatigue crack growth behavior in thick A16061-T6 (6mm) panels with single bonded patch by fiber reinforced composite patch. Four patch lengths and no patch plate were examined. An analytical procedure, involving three-dimensional finite element method having three layers to model cracked aluminum plate, epoxy by adhesive and composite Patch, is calculated the stress intensity factors. From the calculated stress intensity factors, the fatigue crack growth rates are obtained. At the single patching type, different fatigue crack growth ratios through the palate thickness were investigated by using the experimental and analytical results. The results demonstrated that there was a definite variation in fatigue life depending on the size of composite patch. While crack reached the patch end, retardation of crack growth was also revealed in the bonded repair.

  • Bonded composite-patch repair has been widely used to restore or extend the service life of damaged structures due to its effectiveness as a mechanical repair technique. In this paper using extended finite element method (XFEM), three-dimensional crack models are developed to examine the fracture behavior of centrally cracked aluminum plates repaired with single and double sided composite patches. Stress intensity factor (SIF) at the crack tip is used as the fracture criterion. In this regard, the effects of the crack lengths, patch materials, orientation of plies, adhesive and patch thickness are examined to estimate the SIF of the repaired plate and the repair performance. The obtained results show that composite patches have significant effect on reduction of the SIF at the crack tip. It is also proved that using double symmetric repair, in comparison to single one, reduces considerably SIF at the crack tip. Hence, the residual strength can be improved significantly as well as fatigue life of the structure. Investigation of ply orientation effects shows SIF increase as the ply orientation is changed from $0^{\circ}$ (perpendicular to the advancing crack) to $90^{\circ}$ (parallel to the crack line). However, the effectiveness of the ply orientation depends on the loading direction and the crack direction.

  • The use of composite patches for the reduction of stresses at the level of the damaged zone in aeronautical structures has experienced rapid expansion given its advantages over conventional mechanical processes (riveting, bolting, etc.). Initially, The research axes in this field were aimed at choosing suitable mechanical properties for the composite and the adhesive, then to optimize the shape of the composite patch in order to ensure good load transfer and avoid having a debonding at the level of the edges essentially for the case of a repair by single side where the bending moment is present due to the non-symmetry of the structure. Our work falls within this context; the objective is to analyze by the finite element method the fracture behavior of a damaged plate repaired by composite patch. Stress reduction at the edge is accomplished by creating a variable angle chamfer on the composite patch. The effects of the crack length, the laminate sequence and the nature of the patch as well as the use of a hybrid patch were investigated. The results show clearly that a beveled patch reduces the stress concentrations in the damaged area and even at its edges. The hybrid patch also ensures good durability of the repair by optimizing its stacking sequence and the location of the different layers according to the fibers orientations.

  • The present study deals with the repair of composite structures by bonding composite patches. The composite structure is a carbon/epoxy laminate with stacking sequence [45/-45/0/90]S. The damaged zone is simulated by a central crack and repaired by bonding symmetrical composite patches. The repair is carried out using composite patches laminated from the same elemental folds as those of the cracked specimen. Three-dimensional finite element method is used to determine the energy release rate along the front of repaired crack. The effects of the repair technique used single or double patch, the stacking sequence of the cracked composite patch and the adhesive properties were highlighted on the variations of the fracture energy in mode I and mixed mode I + II loading.

Outcomes after repair of complete atrioventricular canal with a modified single-patch technique: a retrospective study

  • Background: This study aimed to present the short- and midterm outcomes after complete atrioventricular canal defect (CAVC) repair using a single-patch technique. Methods: This study included 30 children who underwent surgical correction of the CAVC using a single-patch technique. Results: The median age of the patients was 5.7 months (interquartile range [IQR], 5.0-7.5 months), and 23 patients (76.7%) had type A CAVC. Fourteen patients (46.7%) were female and 17 (56.7%) had been diagnosed with Down syndrome. The in-hospital mortality rate was 0%. No deaths were observed during a median follow-up of 4 years (IQR, 3.5-5.0 years). Patients without Down syndrome were associated with late moderate mitral regurgitation (MR) (p=0.02). Late MR less than moderate degree was observed in 96.6%, 78.5%, and 50% of patients after 2, 4, and 5 years of follow-up, respectively, while late tricuspid valve regurgitation less than moderate degree was observed in 96.7%, 85.9%, and 59.0% of patients after 2, 4, and 6 years of follow-up, respectively. After a median follow-up of 4 years, only one patient had required surgical repair of a left ventricular outflow tract obstruction, which occurred 26 months after the first operation. Multivariable logistic regression analysis adjusted for the type of CAVC, sex, Down syndrome, age, and weight revealed that the absence of Down syndrome was a risk factor for late moderate MR (MR-2) (odds ratio, 0.05; 95% confidence interval, 0.006-0.50; p=0.01). Conclusion: A single-patch technique for CAVC surgical repair is a safe method with acceptable short- and midterm results.

  • 기존에 설치되어 있는 구조물의 양면대칭 패치보강은 항상 면내거동만을 유발하나 시공상 어려움이 있다. 반면에 일면 패치보강의 경우 인장력의 증가에 따라 중립축의 위치가 대칭이 아니므로 휨에 대한 강성도가 증가하게 되며, 결과적으로 적층판의 휨을 심화시키게 된다. 이 연구에서는 일면 패치보강된 적층판의 두께방향은 물론이고 원공주위의 응력집중계수를 산정하기 위해 p-수렴 완전층별모델을 제안하였다. 가정된 변위장의 정의를 위해, 임의의 층에서 변위-변형률 관계와 3차원 구성방정식은 2차원 및 3차원 계층적 형상함수의 조합이 사용된다. 원형경계의 기하형상을 나타내기 위해 초유한사상기법이 사용되며, 다른 외삽법을 사용하지 않고 각 층마다 절점에서의 응력값을 직접적으로 얻기위해 가우스-로바토 수치 적분이 수행되었다. 제안된 모델의 정확도와 단순성은 기존의 3차원 유한요소해석과 실험에 의해 구해진 결과들과의 비교를 통해 검증되었다. 또한 정사각형, 원형, 고리형 형상의 다양한 패치보강에 따른 휨효과를 조사하였다.

Common Atrium 에 대한 외과적 치험 (Surgical Experiences of Single Atrium - Report of 3 cases -)

  • Till June 1988, We experienced 3 cases of single atrium at Dept. of Thoracic k Cardiovascular Surgery of National Medical Center. Case 1 was 26 years old female, and had single atrium associated with partial cleft in mitral anterior leaflet and PAPVC. Atrial septation with Dacron patch and MVR [I-S, 31 mm] were done, followed by TAP, De Vega. Postoperative course was good, OPD follow-up for about 4 years with normal physical activity and ordinary working. Case 2 was 4 years old female with single atrium alone. Atrial septation with pericardial patch. Good postoperative course and OPD follow-up for about 2 years with appropriate physical growth. Case 3 was 22 years old female, single atrium with complete cleft in the anterior and posterior mitral leaflet, and septal tricuspid cleft were identified. Atrial septation with polystan bovine pericardial patch and repair of mitral anterior cleft. Postoperatively, residual regurgitation of mitral and tricuspid valve, but tolerable in some limitation of physical activity.

  • Despite low mortality and excellent long-term results after repair of Tetralogy of Fallot, certain associated anomaly such as single pulmonary artery continues to be told to have a high operative mortality and morbidity, and there is still some debate on appropriate surgical intervention. During the 4 year period from 1981 to 1984, surgical repair was performed on 5 patients with tetralogy of Fallot and congenital [4 cases] or acquired [1 case] absence of left pulmonary artery. Previous left pneumonectomy had been performed in the patient with acquired absence of a pulmonary artery. Transannular patch or RVOT patch alone with or without pulmonic valvotomy was used with some modifications to reduce pulmonic insufficiency in individual patient. In contrast with previous reports, all patients survived operation and have exhibited marked symptomatic improvement without pulmonic valve insertion nor valved conduit.

스카프 패치로 수리한 복합재 단일겹침 체결부의 파손 특성 연구 (Failure Characteristics of Scarf Patch-repaired Composite Single-lap Joints)

  • 본 연구에서는 스카프 패치로 수리한 복합재 단일겹침 체결부의 파손강도를 시험과 해석으로 연구하였다. 스카프 비, 모재의 적층패턴, 결함크기를 달리 하며 총 45개의 시편에 대한 시험을 수행하여 파손강도와 파손모드를 분석하였다. 다양한 형상의 시편에 대한 시험 결과, 한 경우를 제외하고는 수리 후의 체결부가 결함이 없는 체결부 강도 이상의 강도를 회복하며, 체결부 인자에 따른 특별한 차이는 나타나지 않는 것을 확인하였다. 파손강도가 낮게 나타난 한 경우에 대한 파손면 분석결과 모재의 표면층인 평직층의 표면처리가 충분치 않은 것이 원인인 것으로 판단되었다. 시험 결과의 분석을 위해 3차원 유한요소해석을 수행하였는데, 유한요소해석에서도 고려한 체결부 인자가 상하부 모재와 패치, 접착층에서의 응력에 큰 영향을 미치지 않는 것을 확인하였다. 이는 단일겹침 체결부의 경우 외부 인장하중이 겹침영역을 통과하면서 상하부 모재로 분산되기 때문인 것으로 판단된다. 시험과 해석 결과 모재 중앙에 결함이 존재하는 단일겹침 체결부의 경우 절차에 따라 패치 접착이 이루어지고, 모재의 표면처리가 충분히 이루어진다면 수리를 통해 손상 전 강도를 회복할 수 있는 것으로 판단된다.
