Design and Implementation of Virtual Machine Monitor for Embedded Systems (임베디드 시스템을 위한 가상 머신 모니터의 설계와 구현)

  • Recently virtualization has been one of the most popular research topics in system software area. While there already exist many commercial virtualization products for general-purpose computer system, little efforts are made to virtualize embedded system. In this paper, we design and implement a virtual machine monitor which divides each physical hardware resource of a embedded system into logical ones and reorganizes them into many virtual machines, which result in running several real-time operating systems concurrently on a single embedded system. We measure various performance metrics of the virtual machine monitor developed on a real embedded system. The results of the study show that our virtual machine monitor has enough potentiality of its application to real-world embedded systems.

A Hybrid SVM-HMM Method for Handwritten Numeral Recognition

  • The field of handwriting recognition has been researched for many years. A hybrid classifier has been proven to be able to increase the recognition rate compared with a single classifier. In this paper, we combine support vector machine (SVM) and hidden Markov model (HMM) for offline handwritten numeral recognition. To improve the performance, we extract features adapted for each classifier and propose the modified SVM decision structure. The experimental results show that the proposed method can achieve improved recognition rate for handwritten numeral recognition.

  • Machine parameters need to measure in advance for vector control and theoretical analysis. Therefore, we present the machine parameter measurement scheme, considering stator iron loss, by the single-phase test at standstill condition. Using this method, the d-q axis inductances and the equivalent iron loss resistance in the voltage equation considering stator iron loss are easily measured. This method is simple and does not need to use complex theory and expensive equipment.

  • Direct calculation algorithm for the nonzero elements of system matrix is suggested for a single machine connected to the infinite bus. Excitation system and power system stabilizer are included. When the system matrix is partitioned into 15 nonzero blocks, we can identify the location of nonzero elements and formula for each element. No matrix inversion and multiplication are necessary. Sensitivity coefficients with respect to controller parameters are suggested based on the structure of system matrix.

  • This paper deals with turning experiments of aluminium alloy using a single crystal diamond with round cutting edge. A face cutting was conducted using a special precision machine to study the characteristic phenomena in heavy cutting of aluminium alloy. In many cases, one of the most important matter on the surface integrity is about a damaged layer remaining just under the surface after machining. A machined surface roughness can be improved at a small geometrical surface roughness under special cutting conditions, even if a steady vibration exists between a tool and a workpiece.

  • This paper describes development of a microprocessor-based optoelectronic guard system established a higher level of control reliability in machine guard design. The system uses the design concept of diverse redundancy and a fast software algorithm. We have accomplished an safety light curtain system that allows to be intentionally disabled moving machine by the interrupt of dangerous situations. As a result, it is showed that the proposed system is effective enough to practical applications.

  • This paper covers algorithms to determine a machine assignment strategy to locations on a single straight track by minimizing the total backtrack distance. Three different algorithms ar presented: an efficient heuristic procedure, the branch-and-bound algorithm, and the nerual network approach. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithms have potential power to design an on-line optimizer.

  • How can we effectively compress big graphs composed of billions of edges? By concentrating non-zeros in the adjacency matrix through vertex rearrangement, we can compress big graphs more efficiently. Also, we can boost the performance of several graph mining algorithms such as PageRank. SlashBurn is a state-of-the-art vertex rearrangement method. It processes real-world graphs effectively by utilizing the power-law characteristic of the real-world networks. However, the original SlashBurn algorithm displays a noticeable slowdown for large-scale graphs, and cannot be used at all when graphs are too large to fit in a single machine since it is designed to run on a single machine. In this paper, we propose a distributed SlashBurn algorithm to overcome these limitations. Distributed SlashBurn processes big graphs much faster than the original SlashBurn algorithm does. In addition, it scales up well by performing the large-scale vertex rearrangement process in a distributed fashion. In our experiments using real-world big graphs, the proposed distributed SlashBurn algorithm was found to run more than 45 times faster than the single machine counterpart, and process graphs that are 16 times bigger compared to the original method.

Performances of Current-Waveform Modulated Single-Phase Induction Machine (전류파형을 변조한 단상유도전동기구의 특성에 관한 연구)

  • A single-phase induction motor with it's stator winding splitted into two series windings, of which the terminals of one winding is switched pulsationally by a thyristor type ON-OFF device so that the motor may operate as a pulsational shaded-pole motor, can modulate current waveforms of it's two series windings. In view of current waveform modulation method, a single-phase single-winding motor operates as a two-phase induction motor with asymmetrical axis windings where the starting torque can be obtained effectively without an auxiliary capacitor attached and it's running speed controlled by shifting phase between current waveforms differently. Equivalent circuit for analysis is modified from a double revolving field equivalent circuit of a single-phase induction motor with asymmetrical windings whose angle is 45.deg.C elet. degrees. Analysis and test results show that ON-OFF action of the pulsational shaded-pole winding has the same effect of a series capacitor, and then at heavy loads this motor operates with a small amonut of the input current than that having the fixed shaded-pole winding.
