  • Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) can produce three-dimensional objects directly from a CAD solid model without part-specific tooling. In this study, a simple rapid prototyping through selective laser sintering on brass powder is investigated using a Nd-YAG laser. Experiments are conducted to produce single lines on a powder-packed bed for various process parameters. Also, temperature distribution in the powder bed and the thickness of a melted line are predicted by finite element analysis. In the numerical analysis, the thermal conductivity of the brass powder which is obtained as a function of state and temperature is used.

  • A large-signal time-domain model is implemented to analyze an FG-LD (Fiber Grating Laser Diode) in which a reflective laser diode is hybrid-integrated with a fiber Bragg grating (FBG). When the length of the externally integrated resonator is 8 mm, in which the effective FBG length of 2.1 mm is included, a static frequency chirp of 0.44 GHz and a dynamic frequency chirp of 6.4 GHz are observed. In addition, it is also observed that the eye of the 10Gbps NRZ signal is well open. The FG-LD is expected to be a cost-effective solution for a 10Gbps-class single wavelength laser covering a span of 50 km range.

  • In long-haul high speed optical communications, the distance between a transmitter and a receiver depends on the amount of light coupled to a single mode optical fiber from the laser diode(LD) as well as the LD characteristic itself. And the transmitter module must have long lifetime. high reliability, and even simple structure. Such points have induced laser welding technique to be a first choice in opto-electronic module packaging because it can provide strong weld joint in a short time with very small coupling loss. In this paper, packaging considerations and characteristics for high speed LD modules are discussed. They include optical path design factors for larger aligning tolerance, and novel laser welding processes for component assembly. For low coupling loss after laser welding processes, the optical path for optimum coupling of a single mode optical fiber into the LD chip was designed with the GRIN lens system providing sufficiently large aligning tolerance both in the radial and axial directions. The measured sensitivity of the LD module was better than -33.7dBm(back to back) at a BER of $10^{-10}$ with a 2.5Gbps NRZ $2^{23}-1$ PRBS.

  • We investigated the diffraction grating efficiency by the DPSS laser beam wavelength to improve the diffraction efficiency on AsGeSeS & Ag/ AsGeSeS thin film. Diffraction efficiency was obtained from DPSS(532nm)(P:P)polarized laser beam on AsGeSeS, Ag/ AsGeSeS and AsGeSeS/Ag/AsGeSeS thin films. As a result, for the laser beam intensity, 0.24 mW, single AsGeSeS thin film shows the highest value of 0.161% diffraction efficiency at 300 s and for 2.4 mW, it was recorded with the fastest speed of 50 s, which the diffraction grating forming speed is faster than that of 0.24 mW beam. Ag/ AsGeSeS and AsGeSeS/ Ag/ AsGeSeS multi-layered thin film also show the faster grating forming speed at 2.4 mW and higher value of diffraction efficiency at 0.24 mW.

  • Angle sensors based on the principle of autocollimation, which are usually called autocollimators, can accurately measure small tilt angles of a light-reflecting flat surface. This paper describes a prototype micro-angle sensor that is based on the laser autocollimation technique. The new angle sensor is compact and consists of a laser diode as the light source and a quadrant photodiode as a position-sensing device. Because of its concise design, the microangle sensor facilitates dynamic measurements of the angular error motions of a precision stage without influencing the original dynamic properties of the stage. This is because the sensor only requires a small extra target mirror to be mounted on the stage. The sensitivity of the angle detection is independent of the focal length of the objective lens; therefore, an objective lens with a relatively short focal length is employed to reduce the size of the device. The micro-angle sensor uses a single lens for the both the laser collimation and focusing, which distinguishes it from the conventional laser autocollimation method that has separate collimate and objective lenses. The new micro-angle sensor has dimensions of $15.1\times22.0\times14.0mm$ and its resolution is better than 0.1 arc-second The optical design and performance of this micro-angle sensor were verified by experimental results.

  • A computer simulation was performed to study the effectiveness of temperature on the type of laser heat source in the context of the heterogeneous welding of aluminum and copper materials. Three different types of heat sources were used in the computer simulation: 1) Single Beam Straight Scan, 2) Single Beam Wobble Scan, and 3) Dual Beam Straight Scan. Among these sources, dual beam straight scan was found to be the most effective from the viewpoint of heat source control. Because the difference between the melting temperatures of copper and aluminum is approximately 400℃, a clear separation of heating temperature was required, and the dual beam straight scan provided superior controllability in this regard. When using the dual beam, the temperature of the 90:10 split was considerably easier to control than that of the 50:50 split. The optimal offset was calculated to be 4 mm off to the copper side, where the melting temperature and thermal conductivity were higher. In this manner, computer simulation was effectively used for determining the optimal laser beam hear source control without performing an actual laser welding experiment.

  • Purpose: Treatment for periodontitis has evolved over the years as new technologies have become available. Currently, lasers seem attractive as a treatment modality, but their effectiveness needs to be verified. The purpose of this project was to evaluate Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure® (LANAP®) surgery as a single treatment modality. Methods: As part of a mandatory training program for periodontists and other dentists, 22 consecutive patients diagnosed with moderate to severe periodontitis (probing depth [PD] up to 11 mm) were treated with the LANAP® surgical approach using a 1064-nm Nd:YAG laser as part of a multi-step protocol. Following single-session active therapy, they were entered into a maintenance program. Their clinical status was re-evaluated at 12-18 months following surgery. Results: All 22 patients completed the 12- to 18-month follow-up. PD, clinical attachment level, and furcation (FURC) showed substantial improvement. Recession was minimal (mean, 0.1 mm), while 93.5% of PD measurements were 3 mm or less at re-evaluation. Furthermore, 40% of grade 2 FURC closed clinically. Conclusions: Within the limits of this case series, LANAP® was found to be an effective, minimally invasive, laser surgical therapy for moderate to advanced periodontitis.

  • Auto focusing system to find optimized focal position of laser beam used for material process has been investigated by using fiber confocal method. Wavelength of laser diode (LD) and diameter of single-mode fiber are 780nm and $5.3{\mu}m$, respectively. Intensity distributions of beam reflected from the surface of mirror and silicon bare wafer have been observed in a gaussian form. Experimental results show that focal position obtained by LD is shifted from one observed from surface scribed by laser about $80{\mu}m$. It is due to the difference of wavelength and each divergence of between LD and laser used for material process. It is confirmed that auto focusing control system through position calibration has operated steadily.

  • LLC resonant converter is used to control laser output power in Nd:YAG laser. Zero voltage switching (ZVS) is implemented to minimize the switching loss which is adopting the LLC resonant converter. In the spot welding processing of metal thin films, the processing quality is decided by the laser beam output energy of single pulse. We decide to the 50 [J] as the single pulse laser beam energy. Laser output power is investigated and experimented by changing the output current. That current is controled by the charging voltage of capacitor. From those results, we obtained the maximum laser output of 58.2 [J] and the conversion efficiency of 2.52% at the discharge voltage of 620V and the discharge current of 861 [A] and the pulse repetition rate of 1 [Hz] at the charging capacitor of 12,000 [${\mu}F$].

  • We investigate an optical technique for beam shaping and optical amplification of a pulsed laser diode without variation of its original properties, such as repetition rate and pulse duration. The horizontal and longitudinal sizes of the pulsed laser diode are 300 and $2{\mu}m$, respectively, and its output power is $1.1mW/cm^2$. The multimodal and elliptical pulse shape of the laser diode is converted to the single-modal and Gaussian pulse shape by using a lensed optical fiber. Since the single-modal lensed fiber coupling from the multimodal pulsed laser diode degrades the output power severely, the output power of the pulsed laser diode is dramatically enhanced by using an optical amplification method based on master oscillated power amplification (MOPA). The pulse qualities of the laser diode are not changed after amplifying the pulse power and the output power was finally measured to be $29mW/cm^2$.
