  • The IEEE 1588, commonly known as a precision time protocol (PTP), is a standard for precise clock synchronization that maintains networked measurements and control systems. The best master clock (BMC) algorithm is currently used to establish the master-slave hierarchy for PTP. The BMC allows a slave clock to automatically take over the duties of the master when the slave is disconnected due to a link failure and loses its synchronization; the slave clock depends on a timer to compensate for the failure of the master. However, the BMC algorithm does not provide a fast recovery mechanism in the case of a master failure. In this paper, we propose a technique that combines the IEEE 1588 with network bonding to provide a faster recovery mechanism in the case of a master failure. This technique is implemented by utilizing a pre-existing library PTP daemon (Ptpd) in Linux system, with a specific profile of the IEEE 1588 and it's controlled through bonding modes. Network bonding is a process of combining or joining two or more network interfaces together into a single interface. Network bonding offers performance improvements and redundancy. If one link fails, the other link will work immediately. It can be used in situations where fault tolerance, redundancy, or load balancing networks are needed. The results show combining IEEE 1588 with network bonding enables an incredible shorter recovery time than simply just relying on the IEEE 1588 recovery method alone.

  • A clock and data recovery circuit with a phase-locked loop for 10 Gb/s optical transmission system was realized in a hybrid IC form. The quadri-correlation architecture is used for frequency-and phase-locked loop. A NRZ-to-PRZ converter and a 360 degree analogue phase shifter are included in the circuit. The jitter characteristics satisfy the recommendations of ITU-T. The capture range of 150 MHz and input voltage sensitivity of 100 mVp-p were showed. The temperature compensation characteristics were tested for the operating temperature from -10 to $60^{\circ}C$ and showed no increase of error. This circuit was adopted for the 10 Gb/s transmission system through a normal single-mode fiber with the length of 400 km and operated successfully.

  • A conventional pulse oximeter has high power consumption; thus, its mobility is severely limited. In this paper, we discuss the drawbacks of the existing pulse oximeters and propose a new ultra-low-power pulse oximeter that supports wireless data transmission for remotely monitoring vital signs, such as peripheral capillary oxygen saturation (SpO2) and beats per minute (BPM). We could notably reduce power consumption by using a low-frequency single clock in all well-customized modules. Also, our device is publicly certified, and thus, possibly engaged in clinical trials for commercial use.

  • In a packet switching network, congestion is unavoidable and affects the quality of real-time traffic with such problems as delay and packet loss. Packet fair queuing (PFQ) algorithms are well-known solutions for quality-of-service (QoS) guarantee by packet scheduling. Our approach is different from previous algorithms in that it uses hardware time achieved by sampling a counter triggered by a periodic clock signal. This clock signal can be provided to all the modules of a routing system to get synchronization. In this architecture, a variant of the PFQ algorithm, called digitized delay queuing (DDQ), can be distributed on many line interface modules. We derive the delay bounds in a single processor system and in a distributed architecture. The definition of traffic contribution improves the simplicity of the mathematical models. The effect of different time between modules in a distributed architecture is the key idea for understanding the delay behavior of a routing system. The number of bins required for the DDQ algorithm is also derived to make the system configuration clear. The analytical models developed in this paper form the basis of improvement and application to a combined input and output queuing (CIOQ) router architecture for a higher speed QoS network.

  • An efficient technique to trade off speed for resolution is the sigma-delta modulation (SDM). This paper proposes a new SDM architecture to improve conversion rates and SNR(Signal-to Noise Ratio) by using master clock and four divided clock. The charateristics of the proposed SDM are simulated in MATLAB environment. and optimizing the capacitor sizes is done by iterative processing. other analog characteristics are simulated using 0.65${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ n-well CMOS process, double poly and single metal. The result of simulation shows that more increasing the effective bits of internal ADC/DAC, bigger the improvement of SNR.

  • A low power 6-bit flash ADC that uses an input voltage range detection algorithm is described. An input voltage level detector circuit has been designed to overcome the disadvantages of the flash ADC which consume most of the dynamic power dissipation due to comparators array. In this work, four digital input voltage range detectors are employed and each input voltage range detector generates the specific clock signal only if the input voltage falls between two adjacent reference voltages applied to the detector. The specific clock signal generated by the detector is applied to turn the corresponding latched comparators on and the rest of the comparators off. This ADC consumes 68.82 mW with a single power supply of 1.2V and achieves 4.3 effective number of bits for input frequency up to 1 MHz at 500 MS/s. Therefore it results in 4.6 pJ/step of Figure of Merit (FoM). The chip is fabricated in 0.13-um CMOS process.

  • Current test has recently been known to be a promising testing method in CMOS VLSI because conventional voltage test can not make sure of the complete detection of bridging, gate-oxide shorts, stuck-open faults and etc. This paper presents a new BIC(built-in current sensor) for the internal current test in CMOS logic circuit. A single phase clock is used in the BIC to reduce the control circuitry of it and to perform a self- testing for a faulty current. The BIC is designed to detect the faulty current at the end of the clock period, so that it can test the CUT(circuit under test) with much longer critical propagation delay time and larger area than conventional BICs. The circuit is composed of 18 devices and verified by using the SPICE simulator.

  • This paper presents a clock and data recovery(CDR) using a quarter-rate technique. The proposed CDR helps reduce the VCO frequency and is thus advantageous for high speed application. It can achieve a low jitter operation and extend the pull-in range without a reference clock. The CDR consists of a quarter-rate bang-bang type phase detector(PD) quarter-rate frequency detector(QRFD), two charge pumps circuits(CPs), low pass filter(LPF) and a ring voltage controlled oscillator(VCO). The Proposed CDR has been fabricated in a standard $0.18{\mu}m$ 1P6M CMOS technology. It occupies an active area $1{\times}1mm^2$ and consumes 98 mW from a single 1.8 V supply.

  • For more than two decades Nb trilayer ($Nb/Al_2O_3/Nb$) process has been serving as the most stable fabrication process of the Josephson junction integrated circuits. Fast development of semiconductor fabrication technology has been possible with the recent advancement of the fabrication equipments. In this work, we took an advantage of advanced fabrication equipments in developing a superconducting Arithmetic Logic Unit (ALU) by using Nb trilayers. The ALU is a core element of a computer processor that performs arithmetic and logic operations on the operands in computer instruction words. We used DC magnetron sputtering technique for metal depositions and RF sputtering technique for $SiO_2$ depositions. Various dry etching techniques were used to define the Josephson junction areas and film pattering processes. Our Nb films were stress free and showed the $T{_c}'s$ of about 9 K. To enhance the step coverage of Nb films we used reverse bias powered DC magnetron sputtering technique. The fabricated 1-bit, 2-bit, and 4-bit ALU circuits were tested at a few kilo-hertz clock frequency as well as a few tens giga-hertz clock frequency, respectively. Our 1-bit ALU operated correctly at up to 40 GHz clock frequency, and the 4-bit ALU operated at up to 5 GHz clock frequency.

  • In this paper, we introduce an low complexity and low power IR-UWB (impulse radio ultra wideband) baseband transceiver for wireless sensor network. The proposed baseband, implemented by TSMC 0.18um CMOS technology, has a simple structure in which a simplified packet structure and a digital synchronizer with 1-bit sampler to detect incoming pulses are used. Besides, clock gating method using gated clock cell as well as customized clock domain division can reduce the total power consumption drastically. As a result, the proposed baseband has about 23K digital gates with an internal memory of 2Kbytes and achieves about 1.8mW@1Mbps power consumption.
