The efficacy of nitrifying sludge existed in biological nutrient removal process was examined for possible removal of endocrine disrupting chemical(EDC) in the effluent of wastewater treatment plant. Some of ammonia oxidizing bacteria causes ammonia oxidation mediated by ammonia monooxygenase(AMO) activity, which has low substrate specificity resulting in cometablic degradation of several chemicals. In this study, the removal of three model EDCs such as bisphenol A(BPA), nonylphenol(NP) and dibutyl phthalate(DBP) was studied in batch cultures using nitrifying sludge, BOD-oxidizing sludge with low nitrifying activity, and sterilized sludge. Nitrifying sludge showed higher initial removal rates in all batches of three EDCs when it was fed with ammonium as an energy source. The acclimation time was required for the removal of EDCs in batches using BOD-oxidizing sludge or nitritefed nitrifying sludge. That retardation seemed to attribute to the slow growth of cells using the EDCs while ammonium-fed nitrifying sludge could degrade EDCs through simultaneous cooxidation with ammonia oxidation. Sterilized sludge was also tested under the same conditions in order to find the contribution of physical adsorption to the removal of EDCs. About 10~20% of initial EDCs dose was removed when using sterilized sludge. Thus the biological activity is likely to play major role for the degradation of BPA, NP, and DBP rather than the physical adsorption from wastewater.

This paper describes a potential-based panel method formulated for the prediction of the steady performance of a waterjet propulsor. The method employs normal dipoles and sources distributed on the solid surfaces such as the impeller/stator blades, hub and duct, and normal dipoles in the shed wakes trailing the impeller and stator to represent the potential flow around the waterjet propulsor. To define a closed boundary surface, the inlet and outlet open boundary surfaces are introduced where the sources and dipoles are distributed. The kinematic boundary condition on the solid boundary surface is satisfied by requiring that the normal component of the total velocity should vanish. On the inlet surface, the total inflow flux into the duct is specified, and on the outlet surface the conservation of mass principle is applied to evaluate the source strength. The solid surfaces are discretized into a set of quadrilateral panel elements and the strengths of sources and dipoles are assumed constant at each panel. Applying this approximation to the boundary conditions leads to a set of simultaneous equations. Systematic numerical tests show that the present numerical method is fast and stable. In order to validate the present method, sample computations are carried out first for the case of a conventional axial flow fan which has a similar geometry as the waterjet propulsor, and then for the case of a waterjet propulsor on which experiments are carried out at KRISO(Korea Research Institute of Ships and Ocean Engineering).

The feasibility of using bacterial cultures with the ultimate aim for the marine environmental clean-up was explored. The present study reports on the bacterial elimination of nitrogens and phosphorus by strains CK-10 and CK-13 isolated from shrimp farming pond. The strains were identified as genus Bacillus on the basis of BIOLOG test, and designated as Bacillus sp. CK-10 and Bacillus sp. CK-13, respectively. Removal of nitrogens $(NH_4^+,\;NO_2^-,\;or\;NO_3^-)$ or phosphorus $(PO_4^{-3})$ as single N or P source was studied with single cultures under aerobic conditions. Complete elimination of all nitrogens in the concentration range of $100-400{\mu}M$ was achieved in single cultures as well as co-cultures within the given incubation period. Similar results were obtained from the test cultures containing $125-599{\mu}M\;PO_4^{3-}$. Simultaneous removal of all N/P was monitored in the co-cultures. As the results, $400{\mu}M\;NH_4^+\;and\;NO_2^-$ were eliminated within 12hrs and $400{\mu}M\;NO_3^-\;and\;500{\mu}M\;PO_4^{-3}$ were completely disappeared within 36 hrs from the media. The work demonstrated that co-cultures improved the concurrent removal of N/P from the media.

This study was performed to examine the effects of electron beam irradiation on volatile flavor components of Shingo pear (Pyrus pyrifolia cv. Niitaka) and on their changes according to storing period following irradiation. Volatile flavor components in pear were extracted using simultaneous steam distillation and extraction (SDE) apparatus and analyzed by GC/MS. 46 components were identified in control whereas 45, 44, 48 and 51 components were identified in irradiated samples by electron beam at 0.25, 0.5, 1, and 3 kGy, respectively. Hexanal, n-hexanol, and (E)-2-hexenal were identified as the major volatile flavor components of all samples. The characteristic volatile flavor components of irradiated pear by electron beam were similar to those of control, and their effects depending on irradiation source were not different. In addition, there was no noticeable change in volatile flavor components of pear with storage at $4^{\circ}C$ for 30 days or with irradiation. Sensory evaluation indicated that the consumer receptiveness tended to be higher at a low level of radiation dose under 1 kGy than control, albeit not significant. Therefore, electron beam irradiation at low level of radiation dose under 1 kGy could be considered as an effective method to exterminate vermin and thus to improve the shelf-stability of pear without deterioration.
Korea has passed the Act on the Integrated Control of Pollutant-Discharging Facilities in 2015, and the integrated environmental management under the BAT standard is underway. To summarize the nature of integrated environmental management, it is the regulation by the integration of the management of the multi-pollutant source and the technical standard of BATs. In general, in environmental economics, regulation-based on technical standards are known to be inefficient. This paper attempts to evaluate the efficiency of BAT standards from an economic point of view. A simple multi-pollutant model demonstrates that the inefficiency of the environmental tax with imperfect information in a single pollutant situation is amplified under multi-pollutant conditions. The simultaneous introduction of BAT and IPPC can be partially explained by this logic. It is also highlighted by the strengthening of BAT standards by EU, as a countermeasure to the potential deterioration of air quality caused by the change of effective environmental taxes accompanying the fuel and emission price changes.

In this study, high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS) was employed to detect 26 antidiabetic compounds in adulterated dietary supplements using a simple, selective method. The work presented herein may help prevent incidents related to food adulteration and restrict the illegal food market. The best separation was obtained on a Shiseido Capcell Pak(R) C18 MG-II ($2.0mm{\times}100mm$, $3{\mu}m$), which improved the peak shape and MS detection sensitivity of the target compounds. A gradient elution system composed of 0.1 % (v/v) formic acid in distilled water and methanol at a flow rate of 0.3 mL/min for 18 min was utilized. A triple quadrupole mass spectrometer with an electrospray ionization source operated in the positive or negative mode was employed as the detector. The developed method was validated as follows: specificity was confirmed in the multiple reaction monitoring mode using the precursor and product ion pairs. For solid samples, LOD ranged from 0.16 to 20.00 ng/mL and LOQ ranged from 0.50 to 60.00 ng/mL, and for liquid samples, LOD ranged from 0.16 to 20.00 ng/mL and LOQ ranged from 0.50 to 60.00 ng/mL. Satisfactory linearity was obtained from calibration curves, with $R^2$ > 0.99. Both intra and inter-day precision were less than 13.19 %. Accuracies ranged from 80.69 to 118.81 % (intra/inter-day), with a stability of less than 14.88 %. Mean recovery was found to be 80.6-119.0 % and less than 13.4 % RSD. Using the validated method, glibenclamide and pioglitazone were simultaneously determined in one capsule at concentrations of 1.52 and 0.53 mg (per capsule), respectively.

Pulse oximetry, a non-invasive technique for evaluating blood oxygen saturation, conventionally depends on isolated measurements, rendering it vulnerable to factors like illumination profile, spatial blood flow fluctuations, and skin pigmentation. Previous efforts to address these issues through imaging systems often employed red and near-infrared illuminations with distinct profiles, leading to inconsistent ratios of transmitted light and the potential for errors in calculating spatial oxygen saturation distributions. While an integrating sphere was recently utilized as an illumination source to achieve uniform red and near-infrared illumination profiles on the sample surface, its bulkiness presented practical challenges. In this work, we have enhanced the pulse oximetry imaging system by transitioning illumination from an integrating sphere to a multi-wavelength LED configuration. This adjustment ensures simultaneous emission of red and near-infrared light from the same position, creating a homogeneous illumination profile on the sample surface. This approach guarantees consistent patterns of red and near-infrared illuminations that are spatially uniform. The sustained ratio between transmitted red and near-infrared light across space enables precise calculation of the spatial distribution of oxygen saturation, making our pulse oximetry imaging system more compact and portable without compromising accuracy. Our work significantly contributes to obtaining spatial information on blood oxygen saturation, providing valuable insights into tissue oxygenation in peripheral regions.
We present the analysis results of the simultaneous multifrequency observations of the blazar 4C +28.07. The observations were conducted by the Interferometric Monitoring of Gamma-ray Bright Active Galactic Nuclei (iMOGABA) program, which is a key science program of the Korean Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) Network (KVN). Observations of the iMOGABA program for 4C +28.07 were conducted from 16 January 2013 (MJD 56308) to 13 March 2020 (MJD 58921). We also used γ-ray data from the Fermi Large Array Telescope (Fermi-LAT) Light Curve Repository, covering the energy range from 100 MeV to 100 GeV. We divided the iMOGABA data and the Fermi-LAT data into five periods from 0 to 4, according to the prosody of the 22 GHz data and the presence or absence of the data. In order to investigate the characteristics of each period, the light curves were plotted and compared. However, a peak that formed a hill was observed earlier than the period of a strong γ-ray flare at 43-86 GHz in period 3 (MJD 57400-58100). Therefore, we assumed that the minimum total CLEANed flux density for each frequency was quiescent flux (Sq) in which the core of 4C +28.07 emitted the minimum, with the variable flux (Svar) obtained by subtracting Sq from the values of the total CLEANed flux density. We then compared the variability of the spectral indices (α) between adjacent frequencies through a spectral analysis. Most notably, α22-43 showed optically thick spectra in the absence of a strong γ-ray flare, and when the flare appeared, α22-43 became optically thinner. In order to find out the characteristics of the magnetic field in the variable region, the magnetic field strength in the synchrotron self-absorption (BSSA) and the equipartition magnetic field strength (Beq) were obtained. We found that BSSA is largely consistent with Beq within the uncertainty, implying that the SSA region in the source is not significantly deviated from the equipartition condition in the γ-ray quiescent periods.

Schizandra fruit (Schizandra chinensis fructus) were dried by three processes, $50^{\circ}C$ (50HAD), $70^{\circ}C$ hot air (70HAD) and freeze drying process (FRD). Terpenoid were collected by SDE(Simultaneous Steam Distillation-Extraction) and followed by GC-MSD analysis. Also colour profile of each dried samples were measured by Hunter colorimeter. From fresh schizandra fruit, were detected 15 kinds of monoterpene, 28 kinds of sesquiterpene and 7 kinds of terpene alcohol. Myrcene(56.97 ${\mu}g/g$) and ${\gamma}$-terpinene(58.49 ${\mu}g/g$) were the major monoterpenes, ${\beta}$-elemene(120.16 ${\mu}g/g$), ${\alpha}$-bergamotene (103.45 ${\mu}g/g$), ${\gamma}$-selinene (75.97 ${\mu}g/g$), ${\beta}$-cubebene(66.69 ${\mu}g/g$), aristolene (51.25 ${\mu}g/g$) and ${\alpha}$-ylangene(28.06 ${\mu}g/g$) were the sesquiterpenes, and T-muurolol (96.45 ${\mu}g/g$) and terpinen-4-ol(46.02 ${\mu}g/g$) were the terpene alcohols. The dried samples lost more than half of terpenoid content of fresh schizandra fruit during early stage of drying process, and then the level of terpenoid content was not significantly changed. The content of sesquiterpenes appeared to increase until 6 day of FRD. The amount of residual terpene alcohols contained in schizandra fruit dried by FRD was more than those remained after drying by other processes, and schizandra fruit dried by 70HAD exhibited the least residual terpene alcohols. Brightness parameter $L^{\ast}$ decreased with the rise in the level of drying temperature, to which redness parameter $a^{\ast}$ and yellowness $b^{\ast}$ appeared to be similar.
