Variable Selection with Regression Trees

  • Many tree algorithms have been developed for regression problems. Although they are regarded as good algorithms, most of them suffer from loss of prediction accuracy when there are many noise variables. To handle this problem, we propose the multi-step GUIDE, which is a regression tree algorithm with a variable selection process. The multi-step GUIDE performs better than some of the well-known algorithms such as Random Forest and MARS. The results based on simulation study shows that the multi-step GUIDE outperforms other algorithms in terms of variable selection and prediction accuracy. It generally selects the important variables correctly with relatively few noise variables and eventually gives good prediction accuracy.

  • A technique for power system' stabilization is presented using the variable structure control theory. The selection problem of the proper switching vector is very important subject for a design of the variable structure controller. In this paper, the switching vector is selected by desired eigenvalues allocation. and these desired eigenvalues are determined by eigenvalue assignment. Simulation results show that eigenvalue allocation variable structure stabilizer yields better dynamic performance than the others (conventional PSS, optimal linear stabilizer) and is robust to wide variations of the system parameters.

A Robust Variable Structure Controller for the Mixed Tracking Control of Robot Manipulators (로봇 메니플레이터의 혼합 추적 제어를 위한 강인 가변구조제어기)

  • In this paper, a robust variable structure tracking controller is designed for the mixed tracking control of highly nonlinear rigid robot manipulators for the first time. The mixed control problem under consideration is extended from the basic tracking problem, with the different initial condition of both the planned trajectory and link of robots. This control problem in robotics is not addressed to until now. The tracking accuracy to the sliding trajectory after reaching is analyzed. The stability of the closed loop system is investigated in detail in Theorem 2. The results of Theorem 2 provide the stable condition for control gains. Combing the results of Theorem 1 and Theorem 2 gives rise to possibility of designing the improved variable structure tracking controller to guarantee the tracking error from the determined sliding trajectory within the prescribed accuracy after reaching. The usefulness of the algorithm has been demonstrated through simulation studies on the mixed tracking control of a two.link robot under parameter uncertainties and payload variations.

  • Typically, it should be use auxiliary variable for calibrating the survey nonreponse in census or sampling survey. Where, if the dimension of auxiliary information is large, then it nay be spend a lot of computing time, and difficult to handle data set. Also because the variance estimator depends on the dimension of auxiliary variables, the variance estimator becomes underestimator. To deal with this problem, we propose the variable selection methods for calibration estimation procedure in unit nonreponse situation and we compare the efficiency by simulation study.

  • Design procedure of adaptive controller with variable load condition is present and applied to velocity control of small, permanent magnet DC servo motor. The state feedback control scheme is adopted and Recursive Least Squares algorithm is used for parameter estimation. In order to reduce the time consuming. In the procedure of adaptation-gain tuning of state feedback controller, approximate curve fitting technique is applied to the relations between load condition and poles of the system, load condition and feedback gains. With this method, fast adaptation can be accomplished. It is shown that this procedure can be applied not only to variable load condition but also to variation of other system constants, for example variation of resistance and inductance etc.. Simulation results is present for both cases - variable inertia load, variable motor resistance to verify performance improvements. This design procedure produces an adaptive con troller which is feasible for implementation with microprocessor by reducing calculation time.

Performance Evaluation of a Variable Frequency Heat Pump Air Conditioning System for Electric Bus

  • This study presents a simulation model of a heat pump air conditioning system with a variable capacity compressor and variable speeds fans for electric bus. An experimental sample has been developed in order to check results from the model. Effects on system performance of such working conditions as compressor speed, evaporator fans speeds and the condenser fans speeds have been simulated by means of developed model. The results show that the three speeds can be adjusted simultaneously according to actual working condition so that the AC system can operate under the optimum state which the control objects want to achieve. It would be a good and simple solution to extend the driving ranges of EVs because of the highest efficiency and the lowest energy consumption of AC system.

  • A variable friction damper for vehicle driveline has been proposed. This new torsional damper system uses a solenoid as an actuator to vary friction force of the damper. To verify the idea of using a solenoid in a variable damper system, the test fixture and the dampers are made and tested. Also, to find out the range of damper friction forces that influence the vehicle driveline vibration, a mathematical model of the driveline had been developed and simulated. Test and simulation results show that, within electric current used in the vehicle electric system, the solenoid can develop enough friction force that will surpass resonance in the driveline of 1.5 L Gasoline engine vehicle during acceleration.

  • This paper proposes a new application of Fuzzy logic to Variable Step Size Least Mean Square (VS-LMS) adaptive beamforming algorithm in CDMA systems. The proposed algorithm adjusts the step size of the Least Mean Square (LMS) by using the application of Fuzzy logic in which the increase or decrease of step size depends on the fuzzy inference results of the Mean Square Error (MSE). Computer simulation results show that the proposed algorithm has a better capacity of tracking compared with the conventional LMS algorithms and other variable step size LMS algorithms.

  • In this note, a systematic general design of a new robust nonlinear variable structure controller based on state dependent nonlinear form is presented for the control of uncertain affine nonlinear systems with mismatched uncertainties and mismatched disturbance. After an affine uncertain nonlinear system is represented in the form of state dependent nonlinear system, a systematic design of a new robust nonlinear variable structure controller is presented. To be linear in the closed loop resultant dynamics, the nonlinear integral-type sliding surface is applied. A corresponding control input is proposed to satisfy the closed loop exponential stability and the existence condition of the sliding mode on the nonlinear integral-type sliding surface, which will be investigated in Theorem 1. Through a design example and simulation studies, the usefulness of the proposed controller is verified.

  • In this paper, we present a symbol-level iterative source-channel decoding (ISCD) algorithm for reliable transmission of variable-length codes (VLCs). Firstly, an improved source a posteriori probability (APP) decoding approach is proposed for packetized variable-length encoded Markov sources. Also proposed is a recursive implementation based on a three-dimensional joint trellis for symbol decoding of binary convolutional codes. APP channel decoding on this joint trellis is realized by modification of the Bahl-Cocke-Jelinek-Raviv algorithm and adaptation to the non-stationary VLC trellis. Simulation results indicate that the proposed ISCD scheme allows to exchange between its constituent decoders the symbol-level extrinsic information and achieves high robustness against channel noises.
