A Stochastic Linear Scheduling Method using Monte Carlo Simulation

  • The linear scheduling method or line-of-balance (LOB) is a popular choice for projects that involve repetitive tasks during project execution. The method, however, produces deterministic schedule that does not convey a range of potential project outcomes under uncertainty. This results from the fact the basic scheduling parameters such as crew production rates are estimated to be deterministic based on single-point value inputs. The current linear scheduling technique, therefore, lacks the capability of reflecting the fluctuating nature of the project operation. In this paper the authors address the issue of how the variability of operation and production rates affects schedule outcomes and show a more realistic description of what might be a realistic picture of typical projects. The authors provide a solution by providing a more effective and comprehensive way of incorporating the crew performance variability using a Monte Carlo simulation technique. The simulation outcomes are discussed in terms of how this stochastic approach can overcome the shortcomings of the conventional linear scheduling technique and provide optimum schedule solutions.

Analysis and Application of Performance Improvement of a Real-time Simulation Visualization based on Multi-thread Pipelining Parallel Processing (다중 스레드 파이프라인 병렬처리를 통한 실시간 시뮬레이션 시각화의 성능 향상 해석 및 적용)

  • This research proposes and applies a pipelining parallel processing technique to enhance the speed of visualizing the results of real-time simulations. Generally, a simulation with real-time visualization consists of three processes: executing a simulation model, transmitting simulation result, and visualizing simulation result. If we have these processes in serial, the latency from simulation to visualization will be very long, which degrades the speed of visualization of data from real-time simulation. Thus, the main purpose of this research is maximizing performance by adapting pipelining parallel processing technique to the real-time simulation visualization. Also we show that performance is improved by adding multi-threading technique to each process. This paper proposes a theoretical performance model and simulation results of the techniques and then we applied this to an air combat simulation model as a case study. As the result, it shows that the performance is greatly enhanced than the original model's execution time.

  • Recent power converting system for an electric train has characteristics of a complex electromechanical system, which includes VVVF inverter, bidirectional converter, ac motor and controller and etc. So in order to analysis its dynamic characteristics reliably, a powerful and flexible simulation technique is needed. Concerned with this respect, because the Simulink has a veriety of powerful functions and analysis tools not available in conventional power electronics simulation packages, it can be effectively applied to the simulation of the power converting system. In this paper, a schematically similar model for an electric train power converting system is derived on the Simulink Window, based on the Dynamic Node Technique, and several simulations have been implemented with the model. With the simulation results, the characteristics of the power converting system and the easeness of the proposed Simulink-based simulation technique could be verified clearly.

  • An ATM switch must deal with various kinds of input sources having different traffic characteristics and it must guarantee very small value of cel loss probability, about 10$^{8}$ -10$^{12}$ , to deal with loss-sensitive traffics. In order to estimate such a rate event probability with simulation procedure, a variance reduction technique is essential for obtaining an appropriate level of precision with reduced cost. In this paper, we propose a hybrid simulation technique to achieve reduction of variance of cell loss probability estimator, where hybrid means the combination of analytical method and simulation procedure. A discrete time queueing model with multiple input sources and a finite shared buffer is considered, where the arrival process at an input source and a finite shared buffer is considered, where the arrival process at an input source is governed by an Interrupted Bernoulli Process and the service rate is constant. We deal with heterogeneous input sources as well as homogeneous case. The performance of the proposed hybrid simulation estimator is compared with those of the raw simulation estimator and the importance sampling estimator in terms of variance reduction ratios.

  • The cell loss probability recommended in the B-ISDN is in the range $10^{-8}~10^{-12}$. When a simulation technique is used to analyze the performance of the ATM node, an enormous amount of computer processing time is required. In this study, we derive an importance sampling simulation technique that can be used to evaluate the performance of the ATM node very quickly, that is, the probability that the queue size at the ATM node reaches some large value N. The simulation results show that the backlog probability obtianed by the importance saimpling simulation is very close to that obtained by the ordinary simulation and the computer time can be reduced drastically by the importance sampling simulation.

  • Electric Power Steering (EPS) mechanism has become widely equipped in passenger vehicle due to the environmental consciousness and higher fuel efficiency. This paper describes the development of co-simulation technique and simulation integration technique of EPS control system with dynamic vehicle model. A full vehicle model interacted with EPS control algorithm is concurrently simulated on a single bump road condition. Dynamic responses of vehicle chassis and steering system resulting from road surface impact are evaluated and compared with proving ground experimental data. The comparisons will show reasonable agreement on tie-rod load. rack displacement, handle-wheel torque and tire center acceleration. This developed simulation capability can be used for EPS performance evaluation and calibration as well as for vehicle handling performance integration and synthesis.

  • A HILS(Hardware-In-the-Loop Simulation) technique for an IR guided weapon is proposed. The IR HILS facility functions as a testing unit for a missile guidance and control system to evaluate target acquisition, tracking, and countermeasure performance. The configuration of IR HILS facility, modeling technique of an IR environment including target, background and countermeasure, and test and evaluation procedure are included.

  • This study deals with finding a schedule for the movement of a material handling device (elevator) in a manufacturing plant. Two different algorithm (Traveling Salesman Technique and Greedy Algorithm) are used in the scheduling of the elevators using a simulation technique to determine the proper method of scheduling the elevator movement. Based on the simulation analysis, we have found that the Greedy algorithm serves better than the algorithm based on Traveling Salesman technique for scheduling the movement of a material handling device in the manufacturing plant.

  • The simplified simulation technique for the best generation mix is developed and the studied results are described. The best generation mix over study time from the economic point of view can be easily constructed by this technique. Generator maintenance, the operation of pumpgenerator and LNG thermal generator with limited energy are simulated variously, so a role of each generator is also easily evaluated. Through parametric analysis, useful planning guide points are obtained for the best generation mix transition, nuclear power plant construction cost, ruanium cost , oil cost, coal cost and midnight factor in the study case corresponding to real power system size model.
