A 2-dimensional pollutant transport phenomenon in shallow reservoirs was analyzed by using a finite element method. The Galerkin's weighted residual method, based on linear interpolation, was used and a triangle was adopted as an element. The two dimensional Stock's equation and the advection-diffusion equation integrated over depth were used as governing equations. Also the Newton-Raphson method was introduced to solve the non-linear terms of the equation. The results calculated by the model are in good agreement with the analytical solution for a simplified channel where a known solution is avaiable. An actual application of the model is attempted for Sapkyo Lake with a consideration of the influx of the Sapkyo Chun, the Muhan Chun and kogkyo Chun. Further refined research is needed to evaluate the water quality in the other reservoirs.
The friction factor of commercial pipe varies with wide range depending on pipe type and pipe size. Various methods can describe the wide variation of friction factor with good accuracy, but they normally require an iteration process even for solution of a simple case. Power law can result in an explicit form of solver so that the power law is rigorously employed for the development of direct solution technique. The parameters used in the present form of power law are allowed to haute some variation with pipe size and Reynolds number as well as pipe type for wider coverage with good accuracy, while Hazen-Williams equation permits limited variation which accounts only for the roughness or the pipe type. Furthermore secondary loss is considered in the development of explicit equations for design of commercial pipes.
The attitude motion of a spin-stabilized, upper-stage spacecraft is investigated based on a two-body model, consisting of a symmetric body, representing the spacecraft, and a spherical pendulum, representing the liquid slag pool entrapped in the aft section of the rocket motor. Exact time-varying nonlinear equations are derived and used to eliminate the drawbacks of conventional linear models. To study the stability of the spacecraft's attitude motion, both the spacecraft and pendulum are assumed to be in states of steady spin about the symmetry axis of the spacecraft and the coupled time-varying nonlinear equation of the pendulum is simplified. A quasi-stationary solution to that equation and approximate resonance conditions are determined in terms of the system parameters. The analysis shows that the pendulum is subject to a combination of parametric and external-type excitation by the main body and that energy from the excited pendulum is fed into the main body to develop the coning instability. In this paper, numerical examples are presented to explain the mechanism of the coning angle growth and how angular momenta and disturbance moments are generated.

This paper suggests more simple algorithm than Hungarian algorithm for assignment problem. Hungarian algorithm selects minimum cost of row and column, and subtracts minimum cost from each cost. Then, performs until the number of minimum lines with 0 equals the number of rows. But, the proposed algorithm selects the minimum cost for each rows only. From the start point with over 2 to the target point with null selects in column, fixes the maximum opportunity cost that the difference of the cost of starting point and target point, and moves the cost less than opportunity cost th more than previous cost. For the 25 balance and 7 unbalance assignment problems, This algorithm gets the optimal solution same as Hungarian algorithm. This algorithm improves the time complexity $O(n^3)$ of Hungarian algorithm to $O(n^2)$, and do not performs the transformation process from unbalance to balance assignment in Hungarian algorithm. Therefore, this algorithm can be alter Hungarian algorithm in assignment problem.

Estimating the nonlinear seismic response of structure in earthquake engineering is important. Nonlinear static analysis is a typical method, and a variety of methods and techniques for estimating the stiffness of structural system at a certain analysis stage have been introduced and used in numerical structural analysis. On the other hand, such methods have many difficulties in practical usage because they use time-consuming iterative methods or simplified algorithms for calculating the structural stiffness at specific points in the time of nonlinear static analysis. For this reason, this study suggests an accurate and effective method for estimating the stiffness of a structure in nonlinear static analysis. For this goal, existing theories of an incremental step-by-step solution was investigated first. Subsequently, an algorithm available for calculating the precise stiffness of a structural system, each element of which has a bilinear material model, was developed based on the investigated methods. Finally, a computer program, sNs, was developed with the algorithm used.

Guided waves can be used for the inspection of long range pipelines. Surface corrosion is often found as a major defect type in pipelines. The reciprocity relation is a well-established theorem by which one can simplify complicated mathematical expressions. The approach has been already applied to plate and half-space structures to obtain the closed-form solutions of scattered amplitude. However, results for the case of cylindrical structures have not been reported yet. In this paper, the scattering of torsional waves, which is widely used in commercial applications, is explored by the reciprocity theorem approach. Obtaining closed-form solutions of the amplitudes of propagating waves is much simplified by using the reciprocal relation. The scattered amplitudes for elliptical and rectangular defect shapes are calculated with respect to defect depth and width, at frequencies between 0 and 500 kHz. The amplitude shows the periodic result as a function of frequency. The derived closed-form solutions can play a significant role in quantitative signal interpretation.
Traditionally used analytical approach to predict the fatigue failure of reinforced concrete (RC) structure is generally conservative and has certain limitations. The nonlinear finite element method (FEM) offers less expensive solution for fatigue analysis with sufficient accuracy. However, the conventional implicit dynamic analysis is very expensive for high level computation. Whereas, an explicit dynamic analysis approach offers a computationally operative modelling to predict true responses of a structural element under periodic loading and might be perfectly matched to accomplish long life fatigue computations. Hence, this study simulates the fatigue behaviour of RC beams with finite element (FE) assemblage presenting a simplified explicit dynamic numerical solution to show computer aided fatigue behaviour of RC beam. A commercial FEM package, ABAQUS has been chosen for this complex modelling. The concrete has been modelled as a 8-node solid element providing competent compression hardening and tension stiffening. The steel reinforcements are simulated as two-node truss elements comprising elasto-plastic stress-strain behaviour. All the possible nonlinearities are duly incorporated. Time domain analysis has been adopted through an automatic Newmark-β time incremental technique. The program consists of twelve RC beams to visualize the real behaviour during fatigue process and to obtain the reliability of the study. Both the numerical and experimental results indicate a redistribution of stresses along the time and damage accumulation of beam which severely affect the serviceability and ultimate capacity of RC beam. The output of the FEM analysis demonstrates good match with the experimental consequences which affirm the efficacy of the computer aided model. The controlled fatigue damage evolution at service fatigue load limits makes the FE model an efficient tool in predicting high cycle fatigue behaviour of RC structures.

In this paper, the formulation of a new simplified finite element is made to analyze the ultimate strength of damaged tubular members subjected to combined axial force and end moment. A damaged tubular member that has the bending deformation and the local dent is modeled by beam elements. Tangent elastic stiffness matrix of a beam element which contains the effect of the geometric nonlinearity is derived by using the updated Lagrangian approach. Here the contribution of the stiffness in the dented area is neglected since its resistance against the external loads is considered to be small. A fully plastic interaction curve of the element under combined loads taking account of the local dent effect is selected as a yielding criterion at each nodal point. Also tangent elasto-plastic stiffness matrix of the element is formulated by plastic node method. Comparison with the present solution and the existing experimental results is made showing that the present method gives quite an accurate solution.

In this paper, we propose a Over-The-Cell channel routing algorithm for the advanced three-layer process. The proposed algorithm makes the channel routing problem to simplified one and makes use of simulated annealing technique to achieve the global optimal solution. And, a new method to remove the cyclic vertical constraints which are known to be the hardest element in the channel routing problem is proposed, and a way to detect the local minimal solution and escape from it successfully is presented. Futhermore, genetic algorithm based channel router is implemented and comparison is performed with the simulated annealing based one. All algorithms are written in C++ and GUI is made using Motif under Linux environment.
Dean (1965) proposed the use of the root mean square error (RMSE) in the dynamic free surface boundary condition (DFSBC) and kinematic free-surface boundary condition (KFSBC) as an error evaluation criterion for wave theories. There are well known wave theories with RMSE more than 1%, such as Airy theory, Stokes theory, Dean's stream function theory, Fenton's theory, and trochodial theory for deep-water waves. However, none of them can be applied for deep-water breaking waves. The purpose of this study is to provide a closed-form solution for deep-water waves with RMSE less than 1% even for breaking waves. This study is based on a previous study (Shin, 2016), and all flow fields were simplified for deep-water waves. For a closed-form solution, all Fourier series coefficients and all related parameters are presented with Newton's polynomials, which were determined by curve fitting data (Shin, 2016). For verification, a wave in Miche's limit was calculated, and, the profiles, velocities, and the accelerations were compared with those of 5th-order Stokes theory. The results give greater velocities and acceleration than 5th-order Stokes theory, and the wavelength depends on the wave height. The results satisfy the Laplace equation, bottom boundary condition (BBC), and KFSBC, while Stokes theory satisfies only the Laplace equation and BBC. RMSE in DFSBC less than 7.25×10-2% was obtained. The series order of the proposed method is three, but the series order of 5th-order Stokes theory is five. Nevertheless, this study provides less RMSE than 5th-order Stokes theory. As a result, the method is suitable for offshore structural design.
