  • Steel Plate Shear Walls (SPSWs) have been accepted widely as an effective lateral load resisting system. For seismic performance evaluation of a multi-story building with SPSWs, detailed finite element models or a strip model can be used to represent the SPSW components. However, such models often require significant effort for tall or medium height buildings. In order to simplify the analysis process, discrete elements for the framing members can be used. This paper presents development of a simplified equivalent braced model to study the behavior of the SPSWs. The proposed model is expected to facilitate a simplification to the structural modeling of large buildings with SPSWs in order to evaluate the seismic performance using regular structural analysis tools. It is observed that the proposed model can capture the global behavior of the structures quite accurately and potentially aid in the performance-based seismic design of SPSW buildings.

  • In this paper, a two-dimensional transient ground-coupled numerical model for slab-on-grade foundation is developed and integrated into EnergyPlus. A validation analysis is first presented to ensure that for the developed building foundation heat transfer module is properly implemented within EnergyPlus. Then, the predictions from the developed model are compared to those obtained from the simplified building foundation model currently used in EnergyPlus. The results show that the developed foundation heat transfer module accounts better for the effects of the ground thermal mass attributed to the ground than the simplified foundation model currently used in EnergyPlus.

  • About 25% of overall energy use of Korea had been spent in buildings. It is crucial to acknowledge the importance of saving energy in buildings. In order to save energy, it is important to predict accurate energy use. There are numerous energy simulation program that predicts both energy load and energy use. The problem of the energy simulation program is that it holds too many input variables, and it needs experts to model a building. So, our purpose of this study is to develop the simplified thermal load calculation program for building energy analysis which eliminates coordinates of building components instead of using full coordinates by using DOE2. Since the engine of the program is DOE2, we verified the validity of S-DOE by comparing peak heating & cooling load results and annual energy use results. The results shows that there are little difference between VisualDOE and S-DOE. Also it showed that S-DOE took less time to input variables than VisualDOE. These results reveals that the application of S-DOE is possible to accurately predict energy load and energy use of the building and still have strong point that it takes less time to analyse building energy.

  • In order to improve the seismic behaviors of traditional steel-concrete mixed structure, a novel steel concrete mixed structure consisting of steel frames braced with buckling restrained braces (BRBs) and a concrete tube is proposed. Based on several assumptions, the simplified mechanical model of the novel mixed structure is established, and the shear and bending stiffness formulas of the steel frames, BRBs and concrete tube are respectively introduced. The equilibrium differential equation of the novel mixed structure under horizontal load is developed based on the structural elastic theory. The simplified algorithms to determine the lateral displacement and internal forces of the novel mixed structure under the inverted-triangle distributed load, uniformly load and top-concentrated load are then obtained considering several boundary conditions and compatible deformation conditions. The effectiveness of the simplified algorithms is verified by FEM comparison.

  • This study addresses the numerical simulation of the shield building of an AP1000 nuclear power plant (NPP) subjected to a large commercial aircraft impact. First, a simplified finite element model (F.E. model) of the large commercial Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft is established. The F.E. model of the AP1000 shield building is constructed, which is a reasonably simplified reinforced concrete structure. The effectiveness of both F.E. models is verified by the classical Riera method and the impact test of a 1/7.5 scaled GE-J79 engine model. Then, based on the verified F.E. models, the entire impact process of the aircraft on the shield building is simulated by the missile-target interaction method (coupled method) and by the ANSYS/LS-DYNA software, which is at different initial impact velocities and impact heights. Finally, the laws and characteristics of the aircraft impact force, residual velocity, kinetic energy, concrete damage, axial reinforcement stress, and perforated size are analyzed in detail. The results show that all of them increase with the addition to the initial impact velocity. The first four are not very sensitive to the impact height. The engine impact mainly contributes to the peak impact force, and the peak impact force is six times higher than that in the first stage. With increasing initial impact velocity, the maximum aircraft impact force rises linearly. The range of the tension and pressure of the reinforcement axial stress changes with the impact height. The perforated size increases with increasing impact height. The radial perforation area is almost insensitive to the initial impact velocity and impact height. The research of this study can provide help for engineers in designing AP1000 shield buildings.

  • In this study, the natural frequencies and mode shape of an external mounting pod were verified using the modal analysis and modal testing technique for a pod mounted on an aircraft. The procedure associated with the FE model building of an external mounted pod to predict the dynamic behavior of aircraft structures is described. The simplified FE model reflecting the results of the modal testing of a pod is built through the optimization and will be applied to the structural dynamic model of an aircraft which is used to verified the stability of vibration and flutter of an aircraft.

  • The passive energy dissipation technology has been proven to be reliable and robust for recent practical applications. Various dampers or energy dissipation devices have been widely used in building structures for enhancing their performances during earthquakes, windstorm and other severe loading scenarios. This paper presents a simplified seismic design procedure for retrofitting earthquake-damaged frames with viscous dampers. With the scheme of designing the main frame and the supplemental viscous dampers respectively, the seismic analysis model of damped structure with viscous dampers and braces was studied. The specific analysis process was described and approach to parameter design of energy dissipation components was also proposed. The expected damping forces for damped frame were first obtained based on storey shear forces; and then they were optimized to meet different storey drift requirements. A retrofit project of a RC frame school building damaged in the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake was introduced as a case study. This building was retrofitted by using viscous dampers designed through the simplified design procedure proposed in this paper. Based on the case study, it is concluded that this simplified design procedure can be effectively used to make seismic retrofit design of earthquake-damaged RC frames with viscous dampers, so as to achieve structural performance objectives under different earthquake risk levels.

  • The purpose of this study is to predict vertical illuminance accurately at the design stage of a building without the help of simulation tools. Comparing two well-known vertical illuminance prediction algorithms with measured values, it is verified that the Igawa model is more consistent with the measured values than the Perez model. Using the DIVA program, we simulated the vertical illuminance at 30-degree intervals from south to north, compared with the vertical illuminance calculated with the Igawa model. The result of calculation values were verified from 120 degrees east to 120 degrees west. The vertical illuminance values with each of three shade devices were calculated using the Igawa model, and compared with the vertical illuminance simulated by DIVA program. As a result, all the errors when installing horizontal / vertical / grid shade divices were included in the error standard specified by ASHRAE.

  • Numerical simulation of the non-linear behavior of (RC) structural walls subjected to severe earthquake ground motions requires a reliable modeling approach that includes important material characteristics and behavioral response features. The objective of this paper is to optimize a simplified method for the assessment of the seismic response and damage development analyses of an RC structural wall building using macro-element model. The first stage of this study investigates effectiveness and ability of the macro-element model in predicting the flexural nonlinear response of the specimen based on previous experimental test results conducted in UCLA. The sensitivity of the predicted wall responses to changes in model parameters is also assessed. The macro-element model is next used to examine the dynamic behavior of the structural wall building-all the way from elastic behavior to global instability, by applying an approximate Incremental Dynamic Analysis (IDA), based on Uncoupled Modal Response History Analysis (UMRHA), setting up nonlinear single degree of freedom systems. Finally, the identification of the global stiffness decrease as a function of a damage variable is carried out by means of this simplified methodology. Responses are compared at various locations on the structural wall by conducting static and dynamic pushover analyses for accurate estimation of seismic performance of the structure using macro-element model. Results obtained with the numerical model for rectangular wall cross sections compare favorably with experimental responses for flexural capacity, stiffness, and deformability. Overall, the model is qualified for safety assessment and design of earthquake resistant structures with structural walls.
