  • Marginalized random effects models (MREM) are commonly used to analyze longitudinal categorical data when the population-averaged effects is of interest. In these models, random effects are used to explain both subject and time variations. The estimation of the random effects covariance matrix is not simple in MREM because of the high dimension and the positive definiteness. A relatively simple structure for the correlation is assumed such as a homogeneous AR(1) structure; however, it is too strong of an assumption. In consequence, the estimates of the fixed effects can be biased. To avoid this problem, we introduce one approach to explain a heterogenous random effects covariance matrix using a modified Cholesky decomposition. The approach results in parameters that can be easily modeled without concern that the resulting estimator will not be positive definite. The interpretation of the parameters is sensible. We analyze metabolic syndrome data from a Korean Genomic Epidemiology Study using this method.

  • This paper presents a new power control method for compensating the short term fading of the reverse link channel in the CDMA mobile telephone system. The fixed step closed loop power control which is now adopted in IS-95, is very simple in structure. However, the step size in the closed loop power control is too big for the channel with a small variation or too big for the channel with a small variation or too small for the channel with a large variation. The method presented in this paper has a simple structure and shows a new model employing the combination of the fixed step size method and variable step size method which results in compensatingthe disadvantages mentioned above. This paper also evaluates the performance inthe fundamental channel model.

  • A partial shunt regulator (PSR) which is the power regulator of KOREASAT is modeled. The modeling of the PSR consist of solar array, power circuit, controller. and load models. To realize simple structure. a voltage source of the PSR controller is used the output voltage of the PSR. The model of the PSR has very complex structure with two additional coupled feedback loops. The complex model is simplified to a simple meaningful model with only main feedback control loop. The proposed model is compared to a PSR model with DC voltage source at the PSR controller. The proposed PSR model is verified by comparing the model with SPICE simulation for small signal analysis.

  • Generalized linear mixed models(GLMMs) are frequently used for the analysis of longitudinal categorical data when the subject-specific effects is of interest. In GLMMs, the structure of the random effects covariance matrix is important for the estimation of fixed effects and to explain subject and time variations. The estimation of the matrix is not simple because of the high dimension and the positive definiteness; subsequently, we practically use the simple structure of the covariance matrix such as AR(1). However, this strong assumption can result in biased estimates of the fixed effects. In this paper, we introduce Bayesian modeling approaches for the random effects covariance matrix using a modified Cholesky decomposition. The modified Cholesky decomposition approach has been used to explain a heterogenous random effects covariance matrix and the subsequent estimated covariance matrix will be positive definite. We analyze metabolic syndrome data from a Korean Genomic Epidemiology Study using these methods.

  • This paper presents an equivalent circuit model for a dumbbell-shaped defected ground structure (DGS) in a microstrip line. The effects of equivalent circuit elements of a dumbbell-shaped DGS and their magnetic coupling to the host transmission line are modeled as a simple lumped-element circuit. In addition, simple approximate expressions to determine the main circuit parameters for this model are presented. The transfer characteristic calculated by the proposed circuit model is compared with the results of EM simulation and measurement.

  • Active hybrid solid state transformer(AHSST) is newly emerging as a device to maintan the power quality of power distribution. AHSST has a simple structure in which a power electronics device is connected in series to a conventional distribution transformer. The connected power electronics device maintains the constant voltage regardless of the primary grid voltage fluctuation through the secondary voltage control to improve the power quality. It also has a simple structure compare to conventional solid state transformer system and can achieve the same performance with fractionally-rated converter. This paper proposes an multi-level converter based on AHSST system that has a simpler control method and wider voltage control range than the conventional AHSST. The proposed system is verified by simulations.

  • We fabricated very high. speed PIN Photodiode module for the application of high speed optical receiver. OMVPE was used for the growth of InP layer on InGaAs absorption layer. The structure was the combination of mesa and planartype. Fabrication procedure was more complicated than simple mesa or simple planar type structure because we used semiinsulating InP substrate in order to reduce stray capacitance. The results at-5V were as follows : dark current was less than 1nA, capacitance was 0.55pF, and cutoff frequency was above 3GHz, and rise and fall time was about 100ps.

  • PID controllers, which have been widely used in industry, have a simple structure and robustness to modeling error. But it is difficult to have uniformly good control performance in system parameters variation or different velocity command. In this paper, we propose a nonlinear adaptive PR controller based on an Immune feedback mechanism and a gradient descent teaming. This algorithm has a simple structure and robustness to system parameters variation. To verify performances of the proposed nonlinear adaptive PID controller, the speed control of nonlinear DC motor Is peformed. The simulation results show that the proposed control systems are effective in tracking a command velocity under system parameters variation

  • In this paper, a simple equivalent circuit model for a defected ground structure (DGS) microstrip line with stepped impedance slot-lines in the ground plane is presented. In addition, an analytic expression for the resonance frequency of the proposed structure is derived. In equivalent circuit modeling, the capacitance and the inductance of the resonance circuit are evaluated from the dimensions of the etched pattern in the ground plane. The resonance frequencies calculated from the proposed method are compared with those obtained with an electromagnetic (EM) simulation.

  • Salient pole rotor type single phase switched reluctance motor is of simple and rigid structure, short shaft and simple driving circuit. Especially, the output power per unit volume of salient pole rotor structure is comparatively high because the magnetic fluxes of axial and radial direction are simultaneously used. Therefore, this motor will be used at small space and difficult maintenance situations. In this paper, the selecting method of proper pole arc, stator, and rotor dimension of salient pole rotor type single phase SRM is proposed.
