  • Zirconium(IV) chloride is found to be an efficient catalyst for the electrophilic addition reaction of indole with aldehydes/ketones to afford the corresponding bis(indolyl methanes in good yields. The remarkable features of this new procedure are high conversions, shorter reaction times, cleaner reaction profiles and simple experimental and work-up procedures.

  • Efforts to apply augmented reality (AR) technology in the medical field include the introduction of AR techniques into dental practice. The present report introduces a simple method of applying AR during an inferior alveolar nerve block, a procedure commonly performed in dental clinics.

  • Consider a situation that a specific treatment is regarded as the best in comparing several treatments. In this case, a natural procedure to decide the best treatment is to choose the specific one which is proved to be better than each one of the others. This study proposes a method for detecting the best by comparing two treatments from the above point of view. Since this method deals with comparing only two treatments, it is very simple to use and expected to be widely applicable.

  • A 1/4 car model(2 DOF system) is employed to evaluate the performance included a quadratic cost functional in frequency domain. The design procedure of feedback control to optimize the performance index results in a modified Linear-Quadratic-Gaussian problem and cultivates a quite simple control algorithm. Computer simulation result is shown that the LQG method using frequency shaped performance index is outstanding in ride comfort and its response converges to the steady state very rapidly in comparison with the known passive suspension, classical design methods LQR/ and LQG.

  • A simple numerical procedure is presented to determine the stress intensity factors for crack in a stiffened panel subjected to a uniaxial uniform stress normal to the crack. Two types of stiffened panels are analyzed by the finite element method for various values of crack lengths, stiffness ratios, and stiffener spacings. From the finite element solution, the stress intensity factors were determined by using hybrid extrapolation method. Results are presented in graphical forms for upper mentioned parameters.

  • This paper proposes a method in one-way layouts for longitudinal data with informative drop-out. When dropouts are informative, that is, correlated with unobserved data and/or the previous observed data, the simple imputation methods such as 'last observation carried forward' (LOCF) methods would arise the bias of the testing models. The maximum likelihood procedure combined with a logit model for the drop-out process is proposed to test treatment effects for one factorial designs and compared with LOCF method in two examples.

  • By using the state plane approach, the steady state analysis and design of a half bridge parallel-series (LLC-type) resonant converter (HBPSRC) operating in the continous conduction made is presented. The state-plane diagram representation of the converter response gives good insight into the converter operation. Based on this analysis, a set of steady state characteristic waves for HBPSRC is presented. A simple design procedure is given and design example for a 100watts, 30KHz HBPSRC is presented for illustrative purposes.

  • This paper describes the flow path design of unidirectional automated guided vehicle systems. The objective is to find the flow path which will minimize total travel time of unloaded as well as loaded vehicles. The allocation of unloaded vehicles is determined by applying the transportation simplex method. The problem is solved using a branch-and-bound technique. A simple illustrative example is discussed to demonstrate the procedure.

  • This paper presents a model that analyzes the impact of uncertainties in demand and processing times on the production lead time of a Kanban system. We consider the waste associated with under-production as well as over-production when we measure the production lead time. We set up an optimization model to minimize the production lead time. A simple heuristic procedure is developed to determine solutions in terms of the size of containers and the number of Kanban cards. In addition, we numerically examine the behavior of the optimal Kanban system.
