  • This study focuses on the issue of improving safety management of elevators. The role of certification and supervision in reducing the associated accidents is specifically addressed. The results of simple statistical analysis suggests that a certification procedure emphasizing the quality assurance during manufacturing and supervision during assembly and installation of elevators are needed and can be effective in minimizing the associated accidents.

  • This paper considers the estimation of the parameters of a normal population from which a sample which has been censored at a known point is obtained. Simple estimators are presented which are given in closed forms. It is shown that maximum likelihood estimators are obtained by using the estimation procedure iteratively. Some computer simulation results are given.

  • The offshore installation units may be subjected to various accidental loads such as collision from supply vessels, impact from dropped objects, blast load from gas explosion and thermal load from fire. This paper deals with the design and strength evaluation method of the stiffened plate structures in response to a blast load caused by a gas explosion accident. It is a comprehensive review of various items used in actual project such as the size and type of the explosive loads, general design procedure/concept and analysis method. The structural analyses using simple analysis methods based on SDOF model and nonlinear finite element analysis are applied to the particular FPSO project. Also validation studies on the design guidance given by simple analysis method based on SDOF model have also considered several items such as backpressure effects, material behavior and duration time of the overpressure. A good correlation between the prediction made by simple analysis method based on SDOF model and nonlinear finite element analysis can be generally obtained up to the elastic limit.

  • This paper suggests the simple form of a fuzzy PID controller and describes the design principle, tracking performance, stability analysis and changes of parameters of a suggested fuzzy PID controller. A fuzzy PID controller is derived from the design procedure of fuzzy control. It is well known that a fuzzy PID controller has a simple structure of the conventional PID controller but posses its self-tuning control capability and the gains of a fuzzy PID controller become nonlinear functions of the inputs. Nonlinear calculation during fuzzification, defuzzification and the fuzzy inference require more time in computation. To increase the applicability of a fuzzy PID controller to digital computer, a simple form of a fuzzy PID controller is introduced by the backward difference mapping and the analysis of the fuzzy input space. To guarantee the BIBO stability of a suggested fuzzy PID controller, ‘small gain theorem’ which proves the BIBO stability of a fuzzy PI and a fuzzy PD controller is used. After a detailed stability analysis using ‘small gain theorem’, from which a simple and practical method to decide the parameters of a fuzzy PID controller is derived. Through the computer simulations for the linear and nonlinear plants, the performance of a suggested fuzzy PID controller will be assured and the variation of the gains of a fuzzy PID controller will be investigated.

  • Long span structures with low natural frequencies such as shopping malls, large offices, and assembly rooms may experience signification dynamic responses due to human activities. In this study, equations to estimate the magnitudes of group walking loads are derived and a simple procedure to estimate and evaluate the corresponding response of the existing and new building structures subjected to human loads is proposed. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified analytically using a simple floor and experimentally on a footbridge measuring the structural response induced by group pedestrians. Results indicatethat the amplitudes of group walking loads can be easily estimated if the mode shapes are available, and that the corresponding structural responses can be estimated easily by the simple response measurement using the proposed method.

  • Purpose: Several methods of the nipple reduction have been reported. However, the methods described previously are difficult or have some demerits. This study proposes a simple technique for reduction of the nipple height as well as diameter. Methods: The purposed nipple height is marked. A pentahedral design of excision was marked around the nipple. Local anesthetic solution was infiltrated and a 4 - 0 Nylon traction suture was applied at the nipple apex. Excision of the nipple inside both two triangles and a rectangle was made. Remaining two flaps were approximated using 5 - 0 Nylon simple interrupted sutures. However, a part of wound closure was not done in the central area of the nipple. Results: 83 patients(166 nipples) underwent this procedure from December 1999 to December 2008. Follow up ranged from 6 months to 2 years with a mean of 10 months. 78 patients were female and 5 patients were male. No major complication occurred and remaining scars were very inconspicuous. Conclusion: This simple technique has the advantage of nipple reduction in both height and diameter, and provides good aesthetic outcomes.

  • Surgical elevation of the depressed bone is known to be the conventional treatment usually recommended for a simple depressed skull fracture in the adult or pediatric age. The authors introduce, however, a case of depressed skull fracture in an infant which was elevated by means of a cup of breast pump and a suction generator without surgical elevation. In our case, without surgery, a 'cup-shaped' depressed skull fracture in an infant was safely elevated with no neurological signs. This method is considered a simple, effective, safe, and alternative procedure in an infant with simple depressed skull fracture.

  • In this study a seismic retrofit scheme for a building structure was presented using steel plate slit dampers. The energy dissipation capacity of the slit damper used in the retrofit was verified by cyclic loading test. Genetic algorithm was applied to find out the optimum locations of the slit dampers satisfying the target displacement. The seismic retrofit of the model structure using the slit dampers was compared with the retrofit with enlarging shear walls. A simple damper distribution method was proposed using the capacity spectrum method along with the damper distribution pattern proportional to the inter-story drifts. The validity of the simple story-wise damper distribution procedure was verified by comparing the results of genetic algorithm. It was observed that the capacity-spectrum method combined with the simple damper distribution pattern leaded to satisfactory story-wise distribution of dampers compatible with the optimum solution obtained from genetic algorithm.

  • Bone marrow (BM) cell harvesting is a crucial element in the isolation of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). A simple method for harvesting cat BM cells is described. The results show that a large number of BM cells can rapidly be harvested from the cat by this simple procedure. MSCs prepared by density-gradient method were spindle-shaped morphology with bipolar or polygonal cell bodies and strongly positive for CD9 and CD44 and negative for CD18 and CD45-like. They were capable of differentiation to adipocytic and osteocytic phenotypes when exposed to appropriate induction media. The advantages of this method are its rapidity, simplicity, low invasiveness, and low donor attrition and good outcome.
