  • Multimodal optimization is one of the most interesting topics in evolutionary computational discipline. Simple genetic algorithm, a basic and good-performance genetic algorithm, shows bad performance on multimodal problems, taking long generation time to obtain the optimum, converging on the local extrema in early generation. In this paper, we propose a new genetic algorithm with two new genetic mutational operators, i.e. global and local mutation operators, and no genetic crossover. The proposed algorithm is similar to Simple GA and the two genetic operators are as simple as the conventional mutation. They just mutate the genes from left or right end of a chromosome till the randomly selected gene is replaced. In fact, two operators are identical with each other except for the direction where they are applied. Their roles of shaking the population (global searching) and fine tuning (local searching) make the diversity of the individuals being maintained through the entire generation. The proposed algorithm is, therefore, robust and powerful.

  • The expansion of near shore aquaculture is feasibility of moving aquaculture facilities into the open ocean. Numerical modeling technique using finite element method was used to enable the optimum design and evaluation of submersible aquaculture cage system. The characteristics of mooring loads response in mooring lines under waves and current and their response amplitude operators were calculated for single and three point mooring configuration at the surface condition and submerged one. The static mooring loads without wave and current loading were similar for both the surface and submerged configuration. It was calculated that three point mooring was more adequate than single point mooring for the mooring configuration of submersible aquaculture cage system. The wave induced response amplitude operators for the single point mooring configuration with the influence of currents were identical to those without the influence of currents.

  • The development of fuzzy pan/tilt controller for remote handling in hostile environment is presented in this paper. In remote handling, control of the camera system is somewhat tedious and time consuming. Operators should do the two tasks of manipulating teleoperator and camera pan/tilt at the same time. By automating pan/tilt control, we expect operators could concentrate only on remote operation. When operators control camera pan/tilt they use simple linguistic rules such as "If the position of end effector on TV monitor is at the edge of the screen, control pan/tilt to display the end effector near the center of the screen." Such a rule is similar to fuzzy logic, so we used fuzzy logic controller to control camera pan/tilt. pan/tilt.

  • With several advantages such as flexible downlink-to-uplink(DL-to-UL) ratio and flexible spectrum usage, Time Division Duplexing(TDD) is emerging as an alternate to Frequency Division Duplexing(FDD), especially in wireless broadband systems. We already have at least four different TDD systems in the industry: Time Division-Synchronous Code Division Multiple Access(TD-SCDMA), IEEE 802.16e-TDD, IEEE 802.16m-TDD, and Time Division-Long Term Evolution(TD-LTE). A disadvantage of TDD is that tight coordination such as time synchronization between adjacent operators is required to prevent interference between the adjacent TDD systems. In this paper, we investigate coexistence scenarios among the above four well-known TDD systems and calculate spectral efficiency(SE) loss in each scenario. Our findings are that SE loss can be significant if TDD ratios of the adjacent operators are considerably different. However, as long as the TDD ratios of the adjacent operators are similar, configurations in the systems permit perfect time synchronization between the two heterogeneous TDD systems, and the resulting SE loss is zero or reasonably low. We believe that the above findings and the configurations of the TDD systems recommended tominimize SE loss will be helpful for operators who deploy TDD systems in system parameter determination and cross-operator coordination.

  • Recently, a complex event processing system has been introduced to quickly and efficiently process real-time events in various applications. Since the existing complex event processing schemes do not consider the similarity and duplication of operators, they perform a lot of computations and consume memory. To solve such problems, this paper proposes an efficient complex event processing scheme considering similar operators and duplication operations. When the same primitive events have similar operations, the proposed scheme combines them into one virtual operator. For duplicated operations, the proposed scheme processes only one of them first, and then processes the others using the results of the already processed operation when the same operation is subsequently performed. It is shown through performance comparison that the proposed scheme outperforms the existing scheme in terms of the whole operation throughput.

  • From the perspectives of regulation and convergence, several debates on the industrial definition of smart TV service in the Korean broadcasting and communications market are currently in progress. The most heated controversy mainly depends on whether smart TV is controlled under broadcasting regulations or under communications regulations. This Korean- specific problem is summarized in regulation fairness or asymmetric regulations between smart TV and IPTV operators. Although both operators utilize very similar technology and share the same business model, the regulations for only smart TV operators are unfettered. This would be an intrinsic cause that prohibits fair competition in the new converging market. Currently we confront the matter of asymmetric regulations between smart TV and others including IPTV or ISP. The purpose of this study, thus, is to provide the strategic, regulatory guidance and theoretical definitions on smart TV service, as one of converging services, based on a qualitative approach through subjectivity methodology. The study identifies three issues net neutrality, regulation fairness and new media and new market and proposes desirable promotion plans regarding those issues. The study draws lessons learned through a Korean smart TV case and provides directions to strategic-policy studies for future emergent converging services.

  • In this paper we investigate the local spectral properties of quasidecomposable operators. We show that if $T{\in}L(X)$ is quasi-decomposable, then T has the weak-SDP and ${\sigma}_{loc}(T)={\sigma}(T)$. Also, we show that the quasi-decomposability is preserved under commuting quasi-nilpotent perturbations. Moreover, we show that if $f:U{\rightarrow}{\mathbb{C}}$ is an analytic and injective on an open neighborhood U of ${\sigma}(T)$, then $T{\in}L(X)$ is quasi-decomposable if and only if f(T) is quasi-decomposable. Finally, if $T{\in}L(X)$ and $S{\in}L(Y)$ are asymptotically similar, then T is quasi-decomposable if and only if S does.

  • In this note we prove that if A and $B^*$ are subnormal operators and is a bounded linear operator such that AX - XB is a Hilbert-Schmidt operator, then f(A)X - Xf(B) is also a Hilbert-Schmidt operator and $${\parallel}f(A)X\;-\;Xf(B){\parallel}_2\;\leq\;L{\parallel}AX\;-\;XB{\parallel}_2$$, for f belonging to a certain class of functions. Furthermore, we investigate the similar problem in the case that S, T are hyponormal operators and $X\;{\in}\;\cal{L}(\cal{H})$ is such that SX - XT belongs to a norm ideal (J, ${\parallel}\;{\cdot}\;{\parallel}_J$) and prove that f(S)X - Xf(T) $\in$ J and ${\parallel}f(S)X\;-\;Xf(T){\parallel}_J\;\leq\;C{\parallel}SX\;-\;XT{\parallel}_J$, for f in a certain class of functions.

  • This study aimed to specify Vessel Traffic System(VTS) operators' situational awareness(SA) tasks and examine differences in subjective ratings for three levels of SA. Data for relative frequencies of SA tasks were collected by using direct in field observation. Subjective rating scores were obtained using a questionnaire method and compared in terms of VTS operator's gender and length of service career. The results are as follows. First, it was found that the VTS operators perform information perception task elements more frequently than those for information integration and prediction. Second, VTS operators tended to show subjectively lower evaluation scores for prediction than information perception or integration. Third, male VTS operators rated their SA ability higher than females. Fourth, the male VTS operators more than 15 years of career service showed higher subjective rating scores than those with under 5 years of service. Female VTS operators with different levels of career service showed a similar level of subjective rating scores. These results suggest that the frequency of SA related tasks and subjective SA evaluation can differ in terms of SA levels and individual differences.
