  • The opening process of cut calla flower was faster at 30 t than at lower temperatures as it could be expected from its tropical origin. Gibberellin enhanced the flower opening, however, it also speeded up senescent. Silver thiosulfate was effective in prolonging the vase life of the cut calla flower. Silver thiosulfate reduced ethylene generation by the flower and inhibited microbial growth in the flower stalk. Reduction in ethylene generation and inhibition of microbial growth is thought to be responsible for the extension of the vase life of cut calla flowers by silver thiosulfate.

  • In order to exclude the effect of uneven distribution of gold in anode slime, the dissolution of gold and silver from the metal mixture was investigated in different systems, such as the mixture of hydrochloric acid and oxidizing reagents ($H_2O_2$, NaClO and $HNO_3$), thiosulfate and thiourea. In the mixture of HCl and either $HNO_3$ or $H_2O_2$, Au was completely dissolved but the leaching percentage of Ag was around 1%. In both thiosulfate and thiourea solution, gold was not dissolved at all. The presence of ferric ion in acidic thiourea solution showed a favorable effect on the leaching of silver but further study is necessary to elucidate the combined effect of ferric ion and sulfuric acid.

  • Leaching experiments of anode slime were performed with several inorganic acids (HCl, $HNO_3$ and $H_2SO_4$) together with thiourea and thiosulfate solution to recover gold and silver. Gold was not dissolved at all into these inorganic acids in the absence of any oxidizing agents. At the same concentration of inorganic acid, the leaching of percentage of Ag was the highest in the sulfuric acid solution. The leaching percentage of silver increased with the increase of HCl concentration owing to the formation of $AgCl_2{^-}$. Copper, nickel and zinc except tin was almost dissolved in these inorganic acids but no tin was dissolved in nitric acid solution. Most of Au and Ag were dissolved into the mixture of sulfuric acid and thiourea solution. Thiosulfate could dissolve some silver from the anode slime but no gold was dissolved by this agent.

  • The influences of ethylene inhibitors ($AgNO_3$ and silver thiosulfate) and cytokinins (BAP and TDZ) on shoot regeneration from cotyledon and hypocotyl explants of B. napus cv. Youngsan were investigated. The presence of $50{\mu}M$ Silver thiosulfate (STS) in shoot regeneration medium formed shoots at 60-68% after 3-4 weeks of culture, which was enhanced by 2-fold compared to that of Silver nitrate ($AgNO_3$). Moreover, cotyledon explants were more regenerative than hypocotyls; shoots from cotyledon explants began to occur 4-5 days earlier than that of hypocotyl explants. TDZ at a concentration of $8-10{\mu}M$ was effective for shoot regeneration, compared with BAP. Consequently, the optimal shoot regeneration response was observed in medium supplemented with $50{\mu}M\;STS+8{\mu}M\;TDZ$. In transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis, higher density of silver nanoparticles was shown to be accumulated widely inside the cell wall and plasmodesmata of regenerating leaf cultured in medium supplemented with $AgNO_3$. By contrast, in the cell cultured in medium with STS, fine-grained deposits were partly observed in the surroundings of the cell wall.

  • This study was conducted to determine the effectiveness of silver thiosulfate(STS) in reducing $O_3$ injury to tomato plants(Lycopersicon esculentm Mill. 'Pink Glory'). Two days prior to $O_3$ fumigation, plants were given a foliar spray of STS solution at concentrations of 0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6 mM contained with 0.05% Tween-20. STS concentrations below 0.6 mM were significantly effective in providing protection aginst $O_3$ exposure(16 h at 0.3 ppm). STS reduced leaf injury rate, defoliation of cotyledons, ethylene production and degree of epinasty induced by $O_3$ injury. STS slightly increased ethylene production in non-$O_3$-fumigated plants, but changes of chlorophyll content and transpiration rate on a whole plant basis were not observed. In $O_3$-fumigated plants, STS treatment reduced chlorophyll destruction but did not affect transpiration rate. STS treatment seemed not to affect peroxidase(POD) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity in non-fumigated plants but reduced increasing activity of POD by $O_3$ fumigation. However, such an effect as above was not found in SOD activity. Even though enzymatic protection effects were not confirmed, the fact that reduction of acute injury rate was attained for 16 h fumigation indicates that the phytoprotective effects of STS are not necessarily related to blocking the action of strees-induced-ethylene as an anti-ethylene agent.

  • The special properties of silver are often indispensable in the manufacture of advanced materials. Therefore, it is of importance to develop a process to recover silver which is necessary for the production of advanced materials from diverse resources. In this manuscript, the developed processes for the leaching of silver from diverse resources are reviewed. For this purpose, the advantages and disadvantages of using some inorganic acids (nitric and sulfuric acid) and their mixture with other oxidizing agents (ozone, oxygen, hydrogen peroxide and ferric ion) were investigated. Moreover, the leaching of silver with thiourea and thiosulfate was compared over those by inorganic acids in terms of environmental effect.

  • Solvent extraction is an important process to recover pure gold and silver from various leaching solutions. The present work reviews the aqueous chemistry and solvent extraction separation of gold (I, III) and silver (I) from several leaching systems such as cyanide, thiocyanate, thiosulfate, thiourea and chloride medium. The extraction and separation behavior of gold (I, III) and silver (I) by various single and mixtures was compared on the basis of extraction reaction and the selectivity from these mediums. The chloride medium is recommended for the separation of gold and silver by solvent extraction in terms of extraction and stripping efficiency.

  • The Objective of this study was to investigate the effect of ethylene exposure and silver thiosulfate (STS) on flower senescence and vase life of cut iris (Iris hollandica). Cut iris flowers were pretreated in 1 mM STS solution for 30 minutes and exposed to 0, $3mL{\cdot}L^{-1}$ethylene for 24 hours. The vase life of iris treated at a bud stage was showed day 4.2 by exposure to $3mL{\cdot}L^{-1}$ ethylene and day 4.6 by exposure to $0mL{\cdot}L^{-1}$ ethylene. The pulsing of STS increased vase life of iris treated at a half-open stage. But, the vase life of iris was not affected by exposure to ethylene. Therefore, iris flowers were not sensitive to ethylene exposure. Iris flowers harvested at a bud stage do not progress to fully open flowers and then show flower senescnce, the optimum harvest stage seems to be a stage when flowers are open to some degree.

  • This study examined the effects of different day/night temperature regimes or silver ion on growth and flowering of passion fruit 'Tai-nung No.1'. Low temperature treatment ($20/15^{\circ}C$) caused passion fruit cultivar 'Tai-nung No.1' to fail to flower. Flowering induction occurred within a temperature range of $20-30^{\circ}C$, with no significant difference in the days to first flower bud and the total number of flower buds between plants grown at $30/25^{\circ}C$ and $25/20^{\circ}C$. However, plants grown at $30/25^{\circ}C$ exhibited their first flower buds set on the higher nodes and had higher abortion rates of flower buds than those at $25/20^{\circ}C$. Plants grown at $30/25^{\circ}C$ had the most rapid growth and the shortest plastochron. We also evaluated the effect of the ethylene response inhibitors silver nitrate ($AgNO_3$) and silver thiosulfate (STS) on growth and flowering of potted passion fruit 'Tai-nung No.1', when they were exposed to low temperature conditions ($20/15^{\circ}C$) following chemical treatments ($AgNO_3$ or STS, at 0.5 or 1.0 mM). $AgNO_3$ and STS treatments induced flower formation and initial flower bud formation within approximately two weeks at $20/15^{\circ}C$ whereas non-treated control plants exhibited no flower formation. ACC content and activity of ACC oxidase in the leaves of passion fruit 'Tai-nung No.1'exposed to low temperature conditions ($20/15^{\circ}C$) were significantly inhibited by the ethylene inhibitor treatments. These results indicate that ethylene, which is produced under low temperature conditions, plays an important role in inhibiting flower formation in passion fruit.

  • The biogeochemical cycle of silver has rarely been reviewed, even though the silver ion (Ag$^{\times}$) is extremly toxic to some organisms. Its concentration is still rising sharply because of increased anthropogenic activity, specifically the discharge from the film industry (mainly, silver thiosulfate: Ag (S$_2$O$_3$)${^3-}_2$). Recently, a number of researchers have quantified the major fluxes and reservoirs of silver in the open ocean, bays, and estuaries. A review of the available information for Ag cycling in the open ocean shows that the riverine input (from human activity and weathering processes: 7${\times}$10$^6$ kg/yr and 5${\times}$10$^6$ kg/yr, respectively) is the dominant source of Ag to estuarine and coastal regions. Most of the silver (90% of riverine input silver) is removed in coastal sediments by the physical-chemical character of silver due to its high partitioning with particulate matter. On the other hand, in the open ocean the atmospheric input (wet and dry deposition: 1.48${\times}$10$^6$ kg/yr and 1.94${\times}$ 10$^5$ kg/yr, respectively) becomes more important as a source of silver than riverine input. The residence time of silver calculated from available data is 1250 yrs in the deep ocean below 500 m, but only 3 yrs in the surface ocean.
