  • To synthesis of high purity micro silver particle, we extracted the silver from the waste by liquid-liquid extraction and used the rapid firing-liquid phase precursor (RF-LPP) method. The silver micro particle was synthesized at $500^{\circ}C$ for 3 hr in air atmosphere by RF-LPP method. As a result of the research, micro silver particle is measured X-ray diffraction (XRD), the main peak is nearly corresponded to the same as JCPDS card (No.87-0719). With using the RF-LPP method, the fine Ag micro particle indicated due to the control of nucleation site and the oxygen contents was decreased by reducing treatment. We expect this research contribute to advance in field of the recycling technology.

  • DNA-functionalized silver and silver/gold bimetallic nanoparticle superstructure probes with controllable sizes and optical properties are synthesized using monothiol DNA and dithiothreitol. The superstructures exhibit a very narrow size distribution, which can be easily controlled by balancing the ratio of dithiothreitol and DNA. These superstructures assemble reversibly in a highly cooperative manner, and are SERS active. Multiplexed colorimetric detection of DNA targets using these superstructure probes has been demonstrated to identify three different DNA target sequences that are associated with three lethal diseases, respectively.

  • The synthesis of silver coated iron base alloy (Sendust : Fe-Si-Al) powder having the both effects of shielding and suppressing of electromagnetic wave was studied. Depending on thickness of silver coating layer, the electromagnetic properties of the dispersed particles complexed with organic binder were examined. It is proposed that the silver coated sendust flake powders with controlled electrical properties and thickness can be used as thin microwave absorbers in quasi-microwave frequency band.

  • New materials are very useful due to their wide range of applications, however, they also have caused new pollutants that damage our environment. Chemists have been conscious of the severity of these environmental problems and a great deal of effort has been put into developing environmentally benign chemical processes to synthesize new materials (green synthesis). We also have reported a green synthesis method of synthesizing silver nanoparticles using water-glycerol solution in a previous study. While conducting further research, we have recently discovered that the size of silver nanoparticles is proportional to the quantity of water present in glycerol. This method is completely benign and ecofriendly pathway, as the size of silver nanoparticles is adjusted solely by controlling the quantity of water added to glycerol, without extra additives and energy.

  • Purpose: To evaluate the antimicrobial persistence of silver diamine fluoride (SDF) and silver fluoride (AgF) on Streptococcus mutans. Materials and Methods: An in vitro experiment was conducted to observe changes in the diameter of the inhibition zone of various materials, including AgF (Riva Star AquaTM step 1; SDI), potassium iodine (Riva star aquaTM step 2; SDI), Fluor protector® (FP, Ivoclar Vivadent), SDF (Riva starTM step 1; SDI), Ampicillin (Sigma-Aldrich), Amphotericin B (Nexstar) and negative control on S. mutans. Result: SDF, AgF and FP exhibited significant antimicrobial persistence over the 4 weeks period (P<0.05). At day 28, the diameter of inhibition zone was larger in SDF than in AgF. Conclusion: SDF and AgF have significant antibacterial durability against bacteria commonly associated with dental caries, with the antimicrobial effect lasting for at least 4 weeks. Further clinical studies are needed to validate these findings in vivo.

  • Commercial nanometer sized silver is widely used for its antibacterial effect; however, nanoparticles may also have ecotoxicological effects after being discharged into water. Nanometer sized silver can flow into aquatic environments, where it can exert a variety of physiologically effects in living organisms, including fish. The present study aimed to investigate the effect of nanometer sized silver on the development of zebrafish embryos, analyze the properties of commercial nanometer sized silver and define the toxicity relationship between embryogenesis and hatched flies. The commercial nanometer sized silver was analyzed in the $Ag^+$ ion form. The hatch rate decreased in the nano-silver exposed groups (10 and 20 ppt); furthermore, the hatched flies had an abnormal notochord, weak heart beat, damaged eyes and curved tail. The expression of the Sel N1 gene decreased in the nano-silver exposed groups, and the catalase activities of the exposed groups increased relative to those in the control group. Therefore, the $Ag^+$ ions in commercial nanometer sized silver could accumulate in aquatic environments and seriously damage the development of zebrafish embryos.

  • There has been much interest in recycling electronic wastes in order to mitigate environmental problems and to recover the large amount of constituent metals. Silver recovery from electronic waste is extensively studied because of environmental and economic benefits and the use of silver in fabricating nanodevices. Hydrometallurgical processing is often used for silver recovery because it has the advantages of low cost and ease of control. Research on synthesis recovered silver into nanoparticles is needed for application to transistors and solar cells. In this study, silver is selectively recovered from the by-product of electrodes. Silver precursors are prepared using the dissolution characteristics of the leaching solution. In the liquid reduction process, silver nanoparticles are synthesized under various surfactant conditions and then analyzed. The purity of the recovered silver is 99.24%, and the average particle size of the silver nanoparticles is 68 nm.

  • Highly ordered silver nanowire with a diameter of 10 nm was arrayed by electroless deposition in a porous anodic aluminum oxide(AAO) membrane. The AAO membrane was fabricated electrochemically in an oxalic acid solution via a two-step anodization process, while growth of the silver nanowire was initiated by using electroless deposition at the long-range-ordered nanochannels of the AAO membrane followed by thermal reduction of a silver nitrate aqueous solution by increasing the temperature up to $350^{\circ}C$ for an hour. An additional electro-chemical procedure was applied after the two-step anodization to control the pore size and channel density of AAO, which enabled us to fabricate highly-ordered silver nanowire on a large scale. Electroless deposition of silver nitrate aqueous solution into the AAO membrane and thermal reduction of silver nanowires was performed by increasing the temperature up to $350^{\circ}C$ for 1 h. The morphologies of silver nanowires arrayed in the AAO membrane were investigated using SEM. The chemical composition and crystalline structure were confirmed by XRD and EDX. The electroless-deposited silver nanowires in AAO revealed a well-crystallized self-ordered array with a width of 10 nm.

  • Mica (muscovite) powders were synthesized by hydrothermal method (horizontal turning method). The hydrothermal conditions for the synthesis of mica were prepared by the ratio of $K_2O : Al(OH)_3 : SiO_2$ = 1 : 3 : 3 mol% as the starting materials with KOH (8 mol%) solution as the hydrothermal solvent and reaction temperature at $260^{\circ}C$ for 72hrs. The synthetic powder used for preparation of nano silver coated mica by vertical hydrothermal treatment. The hydrothermal conditions for the treated as nano silver coating were prepared by the synthetic powder as raw materials, triple distilled water ($0.5{\ell}$) solution as the hydrothermal solvent with nano silver sol (1,000 ppm) as the material of nano silver coating and reaction temperature at $160{\sim}260^{\circ}C$ for 72 hrs. After hydrothermal treatment, structural, judgment of nano silver coating and character of nano silver coated mica were examined by XRD, SEM, TEM-EDX and shake plask method.

  • Ships and marine structures have a lot of problems in their high maintenance and operating cost by biofouling. A biofouling occurrs by the adhesion of marine microorganism, algae and bacteria. In this study, the aim is to prevent or to reduce the biofouling phenomena through silver nano-particle coating on artificial light-weight aggregates and geopolymer. The antibacterial activity on them is tested according to ASTM E2149-2013a. The test results showed, it is estimated that silver nano-particles removed 99.99 % of bacteria. Specimens were set up in the sea side of field test area in Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology (KIOST) and have been observed for five months. The anti-biofouling effect and difference in weight change rate have been detected two months later after the installation. Because silver nanoparticles inhibit bacterial growth and kill the cells by destroying bacterial membranes, silver nano-particle coating on artificial lightweight aggregates is a well-suited and eco-friendly method for preventing biofouling in the sea up to 5 months.
