Soil testing for silicon (Si) in the upland soils has not been sufficiently investigated. The objective of this study was to identify a suitable Si extraction method for upland soils of oriental melon (Cucumis melo L.). Thirty-eight surface soil samples and matured leaf samples were collected from plastic film houses in Sungju, Gyeongbuk province. In the laboratory, six different methods were used for extracting Si from the soils. The methods included 0.5 N HCl extraction, 1 N sodium acetate buffer (PH 4.0) extraction, citric acid 1% extraction, water extraction, Tiis buffer pH 7.0 extraction, and extraction after incubation with water for 1 week. The concentration of dissolved Si in soil extracts from all methods was determined colorimetrically. With 1 N sodium acetate buffer extraction, as the available soil Si increased, the concentration ofSi in oriental melon leaf increased until around $14g\;SiO_2\;kg^{-1}$ was reached in the form of a saturation curve. Also, among the methods studied, extraction with 1 N sodium acetate buffer was the only method provided a significant linear correlation with oriental melon leaf Si content in the range of extractable soil Si lower than the level which inducing Si saturation in oriental melon leaf. These results indicate that 1 N sodium acetate buffer extraction procedure is the best soil Si test method for upland soils of oriental melon. This sodium acetate buffer extraction procedure is rapid and quite well acquainted with scientists and farmers, since the method has been used for routine paddy soil testing.

Silicon nitride ($Si_3N_4$) is regarded as one of the most promising materials for high temperature structural applications due to its excellent mechanical properties at both room and elevated temperatures. However, one high-temperature $Si_3N_4$ material intended for use in radomes has a relatively high dielectric constant of 7.9 - 8.2 at 8 - 10 GHz. In order to reduce the dielectric constant of the $Si_3N_4$, an in-situ reaction process was used to fabricate $Si_3N_4-SiO_2$-BN composites. In the present study, an in-situ reaction between $B_2O_3$ and $Si_3N_4$, with or without addition of BN in the starting powder mixture, was used to form the composite. The in-situ reaction process resulted in the uniform distribution of the constituents making up the composite ceramic, and resulted in good flexural strength and dielectric constant. The composite was produced by pressure-less sintering and hot-pressing at $1650^{\circ}C$ in a nitrogen atmosphere. Microstructure, flexural strength, and dielectric properties of the composites were evaluated with respect to their compositions and sintering processes. The highest flexural strength (193 MPa) and lowest dielectric constant (5.4) was obtained for the hot-pressed composites. The strength of these $Si_3N_4-SiO_2$-BN composites decreased with increasing BN content.

In this study, Si-SiC composites were fabricated using a Si melt infiltration method using ${\beta}$-SiC/C composite powders synthesized by the carbothermal reduction of $SiO_2-C$ precursors made from a TEOS and a phenol resin. The purity of the synthesized SiC-C composite powders was higher than 99.9993 wt% and the average particle size varied from 4 to $6{\mu}m$ with increasing carbon contents of the $SiO_2-C$ precursors. It was found that the Si-SiC composites fabricated in this study consist of ${\beta}$-SiC and residual Si, without any trace of ${\alpha}$-SiC. The 3-point bending strengths of the fabricated Si-SiC composites were measured and found to be higher than 550 MPa, although the density of the fabricated Si-SiC composite was less than $2.9g/cm^3$. The bending strengths and the densities of the fabricated Si-SiC composites were found to decrease with increasing C/Si mole ratios in the SiC-C composite powders. The specific resistivities of the Si-SiC composites fabricated using the SiC-C composite powders were less than $0.018{\Omega}cm$. With increasing C content in the SiC-C composite powders used for the fabrication of Si-SiC composites, the specific resistivity of the Si-SiC composites was found to slightly increase from 0.0157 to $0.018{\Omega}cm$.

According to thermal degradation on power transformers, it is known that electrical, mechanical and chemical characteristics for power transformer's oil-paper are changed. In the chemical property, especially, when the kraft paper is aged, the cellulose polymer chains break down into shorter lengths. It causes decrease in both tensile strength and degree of polymerization of paper insulation. Also the paper breakdown is accompanied by an increase in the content of various furanic compounds within the dielectric liquid. It is known that furanic components in transformer oil come only from the decomposition of insulating paper rather than from the oil itself. Therefore the analysis of furanic degradation products provides a complementary technique to dissolved gas analysis for monitoring transformers when we evaluate the aging of insulating paper by the total concentration of carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide dissolved in oil only. Recently, the analysis of furanic compounds by high performance liquid chromatography(HPLC) using IEC 61198 method for estimating degradation of paper insulation in power transformers has been used more conveniently for assessment of oil-paper. It is know that the main products which is produced by aging are 2-furfuryl alcohol, 2-furaldehyde(furfural), 2-furoic acid, 2-acetylfuran, 5-methyl-2-furaldehyde, and 5-hydroxymethyl-2-furaldehyde. For investigating the accelerated aging process of oil-paper samples we manufactured accelerating aging equipment and we estimated variation of insulations at $140^{\circ}C$ temp. during 500 hours. Typical transformer proportions of copper, silicon steel and iron have been added to oil-paper insulation during the aging process. The oil-paper insulation samples have been measured at intervals of 100 hours. Finally we have analyzed that 2-furoic acid and 2-acetylfuran products of furanic compounds were detected by HPLC, and their concentrations were increased with accelerated aging time.
This research was conducted to determine the effects of four different substrates, expanded rice hulls (ERH), commercial substrates for strawberries (CSS), clay sand (CS), and loamy sand (LS), on the inhibition of anthracnose crown rot (ACR) in strawberry. Mother plants of 'Seolhyang' strawberry were transplanted into an elevated bed in March, 2013 and March, 2014 and the runners connecting mother plants and daughter plants were cut in early August of both years. After separation, growth characteristics of the daughter plants were measured and then each daughter plant was inoculated with conidial suspensions of Colletotrichum fructicola, one of several species of Colletotrichum that causes ACR in strawberries. The incidence of ACR as influenced by the different substrates was investigated in both years. The daughter plants grown on CSS had the highest values for shoot height, leaf area, and fresh weight. Those grown on ERH and LS substrates also displayed good above-ground growth characteristics except for fresh weight, but the daughter plants grown on CS had the poorest above-ground growth characteristics. The ERH and CS treatments resulted in the highest number of primary roots and the greatest root weight. The CSS-grown daughter plants had the highest ACR disease index, followed by the CS and LS treatments, but there were no significant differences among the three substrates. However, the ERH-grown daughter plants had a markedly lower ACR disease index on October 11, 2013 and October 7, 2014. The CSS-grown daughter plants had high nitrogen and potassium contents and low calcium content, whereas the ERH-grown daughter plants had low nitrogen levels and high silicon levels. The results of this study provide basic information on the ability of the different substrates tested to provide disease suppression of ACR in the propagation of strawberry transplants.

Near infra-red (NIR) spectroscopy has been used for the non-invasive assessment of intact fruit for eating quality attributes such as total soluble solids (TSS) content. However, little information is available in the literature with respect to the robustness of such calibration models validated against independent populations (however, see Peiris et al. 1998 and Guthrie et al. 1998). Many studies report ‘prediction’ statistics in which the calibration and prediction sets are subsets of the same population (e. g. a three year calibration validated against a set from the same population, Peiris et al. 1998; calibration and validation subsets of the same initial population, Guthrie and Walsh 1997 and McGlone and Kawano 1998). In this study, a calibration was developed across 84 melon fruit (R$^2$= 0.86$^{\circ}$Brix, SECV = 0.38$^{\circ}$Brix), which predicted well on fruit excluded from the calibration set but taken from the same population (n = 24, SEP = 0.38$^{\circ}$Brix with 0.1$^{\circ}$Brix bias), relative to an independent group (same variety and farm but different harvest date) (n = 24, SEP= 0.66$^{\circ}$ Brix with 0.1$^{\circ}$Brix bias). Prediction on a different variety, different growing district and time was worse (n = 24, SEP = 1.2$^{\circ}$Brix with 0.9$^{\circ}$Brix bias). Using an ‘in-line’ unit based on a silicon diode array spectrometer, as described in Walsh et al. (2000), we collected spectra from fruit populations covering different varieties, growing districts and time. The calibration procedure was optimized in terms of spectral window, derivative function and scatter correction. Performance of a calibration across new populations of fruit (different varieties, growing districts and harvest date) is reported. Various calibration sample selection techniques (primarily based on Mahalanobis distances), were trialled to structure the calibration population to improve robustness of prediction on independent sets. Optimization of calibration population structure (using the ISI protocols of neighbourhood and global distances) resulted in the elimination of over 50% of the initial data set. The use of the ISI Local Calibration routine was also investigated.
New seven acrylic monomers with covalently bonded silicon, germanium, and tin were prepared for high refractive index materials. The monomers were copolymerized with a cross-linkable comonomer (Trimer) to prepare UV-films for optical characterization. The refractive index of the copolymers increased in proportion to the monomer content and extrapolated to determine that of homopolymer. $Ph_3Si$, $Ph_3Ge$, and $Ph_3Sn$ groups contributed to increase the refractive index of acrylic polymer, in which $Ph_3Sn$ was more effective than $Ph_3Ge$. The index increment confidently occurred with $Bu_3Sn$ attachment in comparison with aliphatic acrylic polymers. $Ph_3SnS$-attached acrylate polymer showed a refractive index of 1.671 at 589 nm. The index change was similarly observed at various different wavelengths (656, 830, 1310, and 1550 nm).

The microstructures and mechanical properties of continuously porous $SiC-Si_3N_4$composites fabricated by multi-pass extrusion were investigated at different Si levels added. Si-powder with different weight percentages (0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%) was added to the SiC powder to make the raw mixture powders, with $6wt%Y_2O_3-2wt%Al_2O_3$ as sintering additives, carbon ($10-15{\mu}m$) as a pore-forming agent, ethylene vinyl acetate as a binder and stearic acid ($CH_3(CH_2)_{16}COOH$) as a lubricant. In the continuously porous $SiC-Si_3N_4$ composites, $Si_3N_4$ whiskers like the hairs of nostrils were frequently observed on the wall of the pores. In this study, the morphology of the $Si_3N_4$ whiskers was investigated with the silicon addition content. In the composites containing of 10 wt% Si, a large number of $Si_3N_4$ whiskers was found at the continuous pore regions. In the sample to which 15 wt% Si powder was added, maximum values of about 101 MPa bending strength and 57.5% relative density were obtained.
[ $11\AA$ ] tobermorite$(5CaO{\cdot}6SiO_2{\cdot}5H_2O)$ is synthesized from the mixtures of calcium hydroride and quartz using alumina in a molar ratio $Ca(OH)_2/SiO_2$ of 0.8 at $180^{\circ}C$ for 8 and 24 hrs under saturated steam pressure. The influence of alumina on the formation of $11\AA$ tobermorite was investigated by X-ray diffraction, differential thermal analysis and infrared spectroscopy. $11\AA$ tobermorite containing increasingly larger amounts of aluminum showed a shift of the basal spacing from 11.3 to $11.6\AA$. In general, there was a direct linear relation between the basal spacing and added content of alumina. The differential thermal analysis curves showed that $11\AA$ tobermorite with increasing alumina contents exhibited the exothermic peak at high temperature, namely $11\AA$ tobermorite containing aluminum gave a sharp exothermic peak at temperature around $850\~860^{\circ}C$ in the case of $S_3\~S_5$. The absorption band at $1607\~1620cm^{-1}$ is attributed to the bending vibration of water, and the position of the main O-H stretching and Si-O lattice vibration of $11\AA$ tobermorite at 3500 and $965cm^{-1}$ respectively is not altered. Consequently the existence of alumina accelerates the crystallization of $11\AA$ tobermorite, and that the aluminum ion appears to substitute for the silicon ion in $11\AA$ tobermorite structure. Al-containing tobermorite is distinguished from Al-free tobermorite.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the loess dyeability of soybean fabric using loess as colorants. Recent days, various textile products such as inner wears, sheets and interior goods are manufactured using materials dyed with loess emphasizing its improved metabolism, anti-bacterial, deodorizing properties, and far infrared ray emissions. Soybean fabric was dyed with loess solution according to concentration of loess, dyeing temperature and dyeing time. To improve washing fastness, soybean fabric and dyed soybean fabric with loess were mordanted by mordanting agents such as sodium chloride(NaCl), Acetic acid(CH3COOH) and Aluminium Potassium Sulfate(AlK(SO4)2·12H2O). Dyeability and color characteristics of dyed soybean fabric were obtained by CCM observation. Particle size distribution of loess, the dyeability(K/S) of soybean fabric, morphology and washing durability of loess dyed soybean fabric were investigated. The results obtained were as follows; Mean average diameter of loess was 1.08µm. The main components of loess used in this study were silicon dioxide(SiO2), aluminium oxide(Al2O3), and iron oxide(Fe2O3). The content of these three component was above 75 weight %. The dyeability of soybean fabric was increased gradually with increasing concentration of loess. The optimum dyeing temperature and dyeing time were 90℃ and 60minutes expectively. The fastness to washing according to concentration of loess and mordanting method indicated good grade result as more than 4 degree in all conditions.
