  • The >$^13C$ NMR spectrum of >$^13CO$ adsorbed on Pd particles varies dramatically depending on dispersion. The spectrum of highly dispersed Pd particles supported on silica is a powder pattern ∼800 ppm wide with a first moment of 410 ppm. A low dispersion sample has a motionally narrowed line centered at 750±30 ppm and only ∼85 ppm full width at half height (FWHH). Over several years, high dispersion samples show an increase in the intensity near 750 ppm. These observations are interpreted as an increase of mobile bridging CO on high dispersion Pd surfaces of particles which resulted from smoothing of the metal particle surfaces in the presence of CO.

  • The composite electroplating is accomplished by adding inert materials during the electroplating. Permalloy is the term for Ni-Fe alloy and it is used for industrial applications due to its high magnetic permeability, surface wear resistance, corrosion protection. Microhardness for microdevices is enhanced after composite coating and it increases the life cycle. However, the hydroxyl group on the silica makes their surface susceptible to moisture and it causes the silica nanoparticles to be agglomerated in the aqueous solution. The agglomeration problem causes poor dispersion which eventually interrupts uniform deposition of silica nanoparticles. In this study, the dispersion of silica nanoparticles in the permalloy electroplated layer is reported with variation of additives and current densities. The optimum current density was 20 $mA/cm^2$ and the silica content was 9 at% at $50^{\circ}C$. The amount of silica nanopowder codeposition and surface morphologies were influenced with variation of additives. In the bath, smooth surface morphology and relatively high contents of silica nanopowder codeposition were obtained with addition of sodium lauryl sulfate.

  • The distribution of particles, in the mixture of poly(ethyl acrylate-co-t-butyl acrylate) (PEB) emulsion polymer and silica nanoparticles, was determined mainly depending on the pH of the mixture. The weak interfacial interaction was responsible for the severe coagulation of silica particles and the irregular dispersion for these nanocomposites. Methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (MPS) was used to modify both the polymer and the silica. The nanocomposites which were prepared with these modified components had finer dispersion of silica nanoparticles and core-shell morphology due to the strong interfacial interaction. The strong hydrogen bonds were identified for these nanocomposites with FT-IR. The nanocomposites having strong interfacial interaction showed the increased glass transition temperature, the decreased ΔC$_{p}$ , and the increased decomposition temperature of the polymer chains. polymer chains.

  • Silica powders with spherical shape and narrow size distribution were prepared by large-scale ultrasonic spray pyrolysis applying the droplet classification apparatus. On the other hand, silica powders prepared by large-scale ultrasonic spray pyrolysis without droplet classification apparatus had broad size distribution. Droplet classification apparatus used in this paper applied the principles of cyclone and dispersion plate with small holes. The droplets formed from the ultrasonic spray generator applying the droplet classification apparatus had narrow size distribution. The droplets with fine and large sizes were eliminated by droplet classification apparatus. The optimum flow rate of the carrier gas and diameter of the hole of the dispersion plate were studied to reduce the size distribution of the silica powders prepared by large-scale ultrasonic spray pyrolysis. The size distribution of the silica powders prepared by large-scale ultrasonic spray pyrolysis at the optimum preparation conditions was 0.76.

  • Influence of low molecular weight styrene-butadiene rubber (liquid SBR) on properties of a silica-filled styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) compounds was studied. Viscosity of the silica-filled SBR compound decreased by adding the liquid SBR. The crosslink density decreased and the cure rate became slower as the liquid SBR content increased. The modulus and tensile strength decreased while the elongation at break became longer by increasing the liquid SBR content. The abrasion losses were nearly the same irrespective of the liquid SBR content. This might be due to the improvement of silica dispersion by adding the liquid SBR. Considering the experimental results, it was believed that addition of small amount of the liquid SBR (less than 5 phr) was desirable to improve properties of silica-filled SBR compounds.

  • Silica-filled rubber compounds show poor filler dispersion and slow cure characteristics compared to carbon black-filled ones. In general, a silica-filled rubber compound contains silane coupling agent (bis-(3-(triethoxysilyl)-propyl)-tetrasulfide, TESPT) and diphenylguanidine (DPG) to improve the filler dispersion and to make fast cure characteristics. Acrylonitrile-butadiene rubber (NBR) improves the filler dispersion in silica-filled styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) compounds. In this study, effect of NBR on the properties of silica-filled SBR compounds was investigated. Properties of the compounds which contain NBR without DPG or with small amount of TESPT (Compound A) were compared with those of the compounds which contain TESPT and DPG without NBR (Compound B). Scorch time of Compound A is faster than those of Compound B. Modulus and tensile strength of Comound A are slightly lower than those of Compound B. Traction property of the Comound A is better than that of the Compound B. Addition of NBR leads to reduction of the used amount of TESPT and DPG.

  • Platinum catalysts were prepared by impregnating platinum precursor on titania-, vanadia-, zirconia- and ceria-incorporated silicas followed by hydrogen peroxide treatment. The effects of the oxide incorporation and the hydrogen peroxide treatment in the preparation of the platinum catalysts on their platinum dispersion and catalytic activity in carbon monoxide oxidation were investigated. XRD, TEM, EXAFS, XPS and carbon monoxide chemisorption studies confirmed the high dispersion of platinum even on silica by the oxide incorporation and hydrogen peroxide treatment. However, the type of oxides incorporated on silica caused considerable variances in the adsorption and the catalytic activity in the oxidation of carbon monoxide on them. The incorporation of titania, zirconia and ceria on silica and further hydrogen peroxide treatment enhanced the platinum dispersion, resulting in the improved catalytic activities. Among the catalysts supported on the oxide-incorporated silicas, the platinum catalyst supported on zirconia-incorporated silica exhibited the highest activity because of the highest platinum dispersion due to the formation of Pt-O-Zr bonds.

  • To fabricate dental nanocomposites containing finely dispersed silica nanoparticles, nearly monodispersed silica nanoparticles smaller than 25 nm were synthesized without forming any aggregates via a modified sol-gel process. Since silica nanoparticles synthesized by the Stober method formed aggregates when the particle size is smaller than 25 nm, the synthetic method was modified by changing the reaction temperature and adding poly(1-vinyl-2-pyrrolidinone) (PVP) to the reaction mixture. The size of the formed silica nanoparticles was reduced by increasing the reaction temperature or adding PVP. Furthermore, the formation of aggregates with primary silica nanoparticles smaller than 25 nm was prevented by increasing the amount of PVP added to the reaction mixture. To enhance the dispersion of the silica particles in an organic matrix, the synthesized silica nanoparticles were treated with 3-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane ($\gamma$-MPS). A dental nanocomposite containing finely dispersed silica nanoparticles could be produced by using the surface-treated silica nanoparticles.

  • We made 8 wt% silica dispersion system with fumed silica and photo curable acrylic monomer by beads mill process. These dispersions could be applied in organic/inorganic hybrid coating systems. These dispersions could be applied in organic/inorganic hybrid coating systems. The 4 species of photo curable acrylic monomer which was presence of hydroxyl group, different solubility parameter, and different molecular size were used in the silica dispersions. Stability of polar solvent, isopropyl alcohol, in silica dispersions was investigated. We investigated the stability of silica dispersions by using steady-state and dynamic rheology. As the monomer has hydroxyl group increased in mono and binary monomer silica dispersions, they showed non flocculated stable sol (loss modulus (G")> storage modulus (G')). When polar solvent IPA was added into slightly flocculated silica dispersions, they changed to non flocculated stable sol.
